If we are talking about the same family, then your Joseph, born in 1808, might be a brother of my James...except that my James was born in KY. Other Carters who were in Montgomery County KY in 1820 were John, Solomon, William and William A. (William Aylett?) James Carter and the Reffetts migrated from KY to Indiana about 1830, probably Vermillion County, and then on to Jasper County Illinois by about 1850. My great grandfather, John Carter, moved to Newton County MO about 1880, but James stayed in IL. (James was probably deceased by 1880 anyway.)
