Although without document proof, the following is proof that Syvanus was a son of John & Mary (Estes) Carter 1. Family tradition 2. Mary Estes had a brother Sylvanus for whom Sylvanus Carter was probably named 3. Sylvanus is an unusual given name and does not appear in another family 4. Listed in the 1840 census of the Sylvanus Carter family is an elderly man 60/70 years of age (probably Sylvanus's father, John Carter) 5. In the 1850 census of the same family Sylvanus's age is given as 44 years, and there is a John Carter whose age is given as 86 (this is probably the father of Sylvanus Carter whose age is recorded wrong, it could not have increased 16 years since the 1840 census was taken.
