Lived a few years in Chester Co, S.C. before moving to Georgia before 1830. In 1830 & the death of Reuben Wilkes he brought to Ga. his wife, Sarah and daughters, Winifred & Anna.. In 1828 William bought a 202 ½ acres in the District of Talbot Co, Ga. Believed to have stated a few years before settling in 1836 in adjoining Harris Co., Ga. After the death of William and the sale of the Talbot Co. property his widow, Mary Wilkes Carter and his widowed daughter, Mary Winifred (Carter) Griffin moved back to the Harris County for the remaining 18 years of her life (Mary Wilkes Carter). William James Griffin b. 07Dec1846 was 9 years old when his father died and he moved with his mother and his family to the home of his grandfather, William Carter. On the death of his Gfather four years later, he became the "man" of the family. Could not wait longer, in 1863 he joined the Confederate front line. In mid November he found himself the disgusted and impatient victim of measles. He pretended a quick recovery and returned to duty. Following an all night sentry duty in the rain he contracted pneumonia. His Mother went immediately to Columbus to nurse her son but he died before she arrived, five days before his seventeenth birthday.
