Does anyone have any information on Jesse Carter (who died in 1804 in the Wake County/Chatham County area of North Carolina), and his wife Ruth? I'm still trying to sort through the two Thornton Carters who followed each other from VA, to NC, and then to TN. My Thornton (I think), and Ruth Carter, both appear in the 1820 Wake County tax list, and Ruth and William Carter are listed as Jesse Carter's beneficiaries. Does anyone know who this Jesse's father was? I swear that my very first act, when I walk through The Pearly Gates, is going to be to hunt down Thornton Carter, and ask him who his parents were!! Thanks so much everyone... Carolyn

I have up-dated our website at http://www.geocities.com/heartland/garden/3471/ to include an analysis of the group 1 DNA group at http://www.carter-cousins.org/results/ . If you have any interest in the John b. 1723, Levi b. 1736, Caleb b.1750, Joseph ? from NJ, lines check out the analysis that Clarence Carter wrote. Here I am again, This happens when so many children marry families with a common last name. I am looking for info on Nancy Stoker and John Carter. Nancy was born between 1779 and 1799 in Surry Co. VA. I am not sure, but I think theyu appear in the 1850 census in Darlington Co. Thanks Butch Hockley TX
Butch, The Primitive Baptist Library in Carthage, Illinois, might be helpful for you. I visited there a couple of years ago and was able to make copies of obituaries of some of my Pittman, Holeman and Ross ancestors. They have an extensive library and are very helpful. You can get more information about them at: http://www.carthage.lib.il.us/community/churches/primbap/pbl.html Note: you will probably have to highlight, cut and paste to get that entire web address. I'm not saying they can help you find the cemetery you're looking for, but they may be able to get you copies of obituaries or other information from their old newsletters. Hi list, I am researching the Stoker- Carter families of Stanly Co., NC. I have been on site at Stanly Co. and have done research at the library there. I looked for the old Mountain Creek Primative Baptist Cemetery while there and was unable to locate it. From what information I have, Robert Stoker Jr. and Laban Carter among others were buried in this cemetery. I have driven the entire length of Old Mountain Creek road and was unable to locate this cemetery. I live outside of Houston TX and another trip in the near future is questionable. Is there anyone on the list that lives in the area or who has been there. I would like conformation to the rumors that these two men and some of their spouses are buried there. Thanks in advance for your time and trouble. Butch Cockerham
Looking for a CARTER researcher by the name of Peri Shumard-Craig. If you have an email or snail mail address for her, please contact me at: dbjmlew@swbell.net She sent me a lot of info on the John Carter line and at the time I was unable to work with her. We have started a website for the study of the lines affiliated with John Carter d. 1811, Green Co., TN and would like to contact her about it. Thanks. Barb
Right! For example, my name is Brownie. That's my real name, not a nickname. However, "Sally" was a frequent nickname for "Sarah" in the past.
Just because a name can be a nickname dosen't mean it is. I have an aunt who was hostile until her death because a respected family historian corrected her name, Maggie Elizabeth Macks, to Margaret Elizabeth Macks in a published family history. Chris, I have my line of Carter's coming from Sumner County TN. A lot of them have married Sarah's. I have found that some of the Sarah's are actually named Sally. I have a William H. Carter but he was born in 1882 Sumner Co.,TN. to John William Carter b.September 1859 TN.(Sallie M. O'Neal) who was born to Joseph Albert Carter February 1833 Sumner Co.,TN. (m. Sarah Ann O'Neal) who was born to Jarrett Carter 1806 N.Carolina (m.Sarah Tuttle). Are any of these names familiar to you? I do have a William Carter b. Sumner Co. TN born to Jarrett Carter and Sarah Tuttle. but he was born 1835 Sumner Co. TN to a Rebecca UNKNOWN b. 1839 in KY. Donna
Will the parties who were discussing the CARTER & MORGAN marriage connections please contact me. I deleted the information by mistake, and have information to share. There was also discussion regarding Samuel Carter in the messages. Thank you, Leland Carter
I have yet to see any of the Carroll County, TN Carters show up in the DNA testing. Anybody? Sincerely, Brownie MacKie (Williamson Younger, Rosalie Tennessee Carter, Henry Newton Carter, Robert N. Carter, Thomas Alexander Carter, Alexander Carter SC).
> If you go to www.carter-cousins-org > This is the Carter DNA website > my line is descended from Capt Thomas Carter > It is No. 14489. Correction. The site is : www.carter-cousins.org Gary Boyd Roberts in ANCESTORS OF AMERICAN PRESIDENTS placed this Capt. Thomas Carter b.1630 and Arabelle Williamson as maternal ancestor of Pres. Theodore Roosevelt. Others have placed this Thomas and Arabella as maternal ancestors of June Carter Cash. Attempts to place former president Jimmy Carter as descendant of Thomas and Arabella appaear to be invalid. More likely, he is from Thomas Carter b. 1630 who married Elinor Cooke who was a grandson of John Carter and Bridget Benion.

Candace and anyone else that is researching Carters. This past summer I visited NC on a genealogy hunt. The Old Mountain Creek Cemetery is not by the church. From what I was able to find out, there is an old cemetery on Old mountain Creek road, but we could not find it. I understand it is not maintained any longer and is not listed in the genealogy library in Stanly Co. If there is anyone on the ground in this area, could you try and locate the cemetery. Butch Hockley TX
While I'd hoped that this man was the common ancestor of my husband's mother's Carter line, he was not. Bob's ancestry goes back to the Capt. Carter who was born in 1603. I'd love to hear from anyone who has this line in his/her ancestry and can tell me more about this family. I'm doing a genealogy project for his nieces and nephew, their progeny, and sons and grandchildren of Bob's. The sea Captain Thomas Carter in my line was born at Bolton, Yorkshire, England on May 5, 1828. He apprenticed as a sailor at the age of 14, and captained his first ship at the age of 19. He married Elizabeth Sharp in Montreal June 3, 1851. He died in Rockford, Illinois May 8, 1911. My cousin is a genealogist and sent me copies of his three obituaries and his biography. I'd be happy to share these with anyone descended from this Captain Carter. He was a very interesting man. Grace Carter Winters __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! I think I have found something that says Laban Carter's father's name was Samuel Carter and his mom's name was Letitia Morgan. Can anyone verify this? Butch
