First of all....Gerald Shur is the founder of the Witness Protection Program. The WPP was founded during the Kennedy administration. Secondly...you have John Carter marrying at six months of age. Thirdly...there are more than 12,000 records on numerous John Carters in the Family Tree library...plus over 800 other records. Days in the nearest genealogy library or genealogy dept. in your local library delving into Virginia books might bring up some clues. I know it's frustrating, but patience is its own reward. The probabilites are that your John Carter's parents came from England.
I need help!! I have been going through the archives and hope that someone on this list will recognize my Carter Family, the founder of the "Witness Protection Program". John Carter was born, according to his headstone June 9, 1769 in 'somewhere", Virginia according to his 9 children and census records. John married Mary Lehr/Lahr/Lohr/??? Dec. 25, 1769 in Shenandoah County, Virginia. Witness and bond - John Beaber, by George Fronch. This is all we have documented in Virginia. There is a daughter, Rebecca Burke Carter born one year prior to the marriage (whoops)! Have no idea where the Burke came from, however, she handed it down to her first born son and none of the other children had the Burke name. Children: Nancy born in Virginia, married an Allison as did Rebecca, Nancy was born 9 months after the marriage. The there was John, George, Isaac, William Allen, Robert, Thomas and Mary C. Carter. John and Nancy Carter went to Ohio around 1802 and settled in Gallia County, Ohio - All of the boys listed place of birth as Ohio, first son, John was born in 1802 in Ohio. My Grandmother and Great Grandmother started trying to find this out and I want to find out who John belonged to before I die! Denise Ashleman saultz@bellsouth.net
Does anyone have a copy of the subject book that can provide a quick lookup for me? (The book is out of print and is not available at any library within 300 miles of me.) In John Frederick Dorman's Fourth Edition of "Adventurers of Purse and Person," p. 443, he cites the subject book, p. 114, as the source of the information that Lewis Burwell (d. 1756) of "Fairfield" married as his first wife Anne Holden. It's somewhat unusual for Mr. Dorman to cite a second source. What I would like to know is on what basis did the subject book (p. 114) make this claim, and are primary sources cited for this? Thanks Lou Poole, Richardson, TX
"Does anyone know of or have in their database Emanuel Carter who is on the Robeson Co., NC census, I think, about 1790-1810. Believe he is the brother of my Isaac Carter. Would be willing to share desc. of Isaac Carter to get info on Emanuel Carter. Thank You, Mary" Would you be willing to share info on Isaac and his descendants without info on Emanuel? I have an Isaac Carter b. 1781 in Duplin Co. NC, m. Dorcas Bradshaw 1/22/1812. Have been trying to locate his parents. I descend from Isaac's son Felix. Felix married Jennie Dews and they had a son William C. Carter. William went by the nickname "Blackie" his entire life and was last seen in Illinois. He worked oil and gas pipelines. Thanks, Sue Blake I found God in myself and I loved her fiercely. --- Ntozake Shange __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! I am seeking info on Josephus W. Carter. I hope by obtaining info on Josephus it will lead me to my great-grandfather's family. Josephus was born abt. 1822 AL. He married Frances E. Ross 1 Nov 1849 Tallapoosa Co., AL. I have found him on the 1870 and 1880 Tallapoosa Co., AL Census. On the 1880 census my great-great-grandmother, Francis M. Unknown Mitchell aged 38 born GA and three children: James W. Mitchell aged 16 born GA; Frances L. Mitchell aged 12 born GA and Eutarcus Mitchell aged 6 born GA were living with Josephus. Frances M. Unknown Mitchell was a widow. I'm trying to find if there is a connection between Josephus and Frances. I believe that Frances was a Carter Last night while searching through the Georgia Marriages on ancestry I found a Frances M. Carter that married Francis M. Mitchell 10 Apr 1861 in Dooly Co., GA.. I believe this is the Frances M. Mitchell that was living with Josephus W. Carter. I have not been able to find Francis M. Mitchell with a wife named Frances M. Mitchell on the 1870 census. My great-grandfather, Eutarcus was born in 1875 in GA, possibly Dooly Co. Does anyone know anything about this Carter or Mitchell family? I welcome any help, suggestions or info on this elusive family. Thanks, Brenda Smith Inlow Plant City, Florida res170v4@verizon.net

Looking for links to my grandfather he was Christopher George Carter born in Darlington, County Durham, England. 1879 to William and Eliza CARTER nee LUNN. Christopher had sisters Eliza born 1884 and Mary Ann born 1877. Sadly their father died in 1885 and the family were forced to move into the union workhouse in Darlington, Eliza the mother later died 1897 in the Sedgefield Asylum, or Winterton Hospital, the children were in the workhouse, at least until the 1890s, I have them in the 1891 census but suspect they were in much later, Christopher George moved to Gateshead by 1901 and soon after marries my gran Elizabeth CARR. We don`t know anything more of the girls but suspect they were in the workhouse until they were found jobs in service or married. Christopher George`s father was born in Newsham, near Barnigham Yorkshire.1837 to Jonathan and Mary CARTER nee CARLTON. Also looking for links to them. They had other children. Christopher Carlton 1838, George 1843, Mary Isabel 1844 and Hannah Otley 1848. George moved to Marylebone where he was a manservant at the end of the century the girls may have visited him there from time to time. Thanks for reading this brief family history of our CARTER line. George Carter in Whaley Bridge, High Peak, Derbyshire. England.

Would like to hear from others researching the James Carter family of Hocking, Ross and Vinton counties, OH and Fountain and Tippecanoe counties, IN. James Carter was born abt. 1782 in South Carolina, son of Robert and ? Carter. He was married 1804 in Frederick Co., VA to Margaret PICKENS. Shortly after their marriage they went to Ohio and can be found in Hocking County in 1820 and 1830; Ross County in 1840, and Vinton County in 1850 and 1860. They are always in Eagle township so I think the county lines just moved around them, but they stayed put. I haven't checked land records yet to be certain of that, however. It appears James and Margaret had three children: Robert, Samuel and Margaret. Robert was born in 1804, OH; Margaret was born June 9, 1805, OH and Samuel, my ancestor, was born 1809. Samuel came to Indiana in 1833, settling in Fountain County. Brother Robert came later, bet. 1840 and 1850. He settled in Jackson twp., Tippecanoe County, which borders Fountain County. Margaret married Henry HAYNES and stayed in Ohio, living most of their lives in Vinton County. Need death date for James. I believe he might have died in Vinton County, but am not sure. Margaret died in 1866 and is buried in Salem Cemetery in Fountain County, near son Samuel. Adina Dyer Tippecanoe County, IN
