    1. FW: [CARTER-L] My Carter brick wall..........( Long, VERY LONG)
    2. Mickey Fournier
    3. Illegitimacy certainly was considered "taboo" in those days but that surely doesn't mean it didn't happen. Check those court records in which fathers were made to post bond for the care of their out-of-wedlock children (called "bastardy bonds" in most locations) and you will be amazed at how common it was. And you might find the answers you need. Many of them have been published. I have a great-grand aunt who had four fatherless children during the 1880's and a great grandmother who had two more children after the death of her husband in 1874. 1. from Pleasant Grove IL, to MO, OR & W.T.
    2. Brad Aumick
    3. Hello listers, I'm searching for Nancy CARTER, b. Pleasant Grove IL, who came with her family, probably from Missouri, to Oregon in 1853, and married 4 Mar 1854 in Linn Co. Oregon, Levi FIELDS. They settled, bef. 1870, in Kalama, Cowlitz Co. Washington Territory. A 1903 Portland Telegram newspaper article states Nancy (CARTER) FIELDS, b. Pleasant Grove IL, was one of 11 children, and had a twin sister still living in Arizona. The family also had a pair of twin boys. The CARTER's lived at Cascades OR, Brownsville, Linn Co. OR, then on the Luckiamute River, Polk Co. OR. While in Polk Co. OR, Nancy's youngest brother, Niah (Nehemiah?), "then a young man in his teens, was stolen and no trace of him was ever found". As for Pleasant Grove IL, it appears there are a few "Pleasant Grove's" in Illinois. I found a Pleasant Grove in Johnson Co. IL, near the Union Co. IL border, either within, or part of Buncombe Township, then another (this one more likely) in Sangamon Co. IL. Used the WorldConnect search engine to see how many people were born in Pleasant Grove IL, and found six places in Illinois named "Pleasant Grove": Pleasant Grove, Coles Co. IL; Pleasant Grove, Jefferson Co. IL; Pleasant Grove, Elvira Twp, Johnson, IL; Pleasant Grove, Pike Co. IL; Pleasant Grove, Sangamon Co. IL; Pleasant Grove, Wayne Co. IL; Tried several other search combinations, with no Luck. So, still don't know which Illinois county these CARTER's came from. Nancy (CARTER) FIELDS' info is at WorldConnect: http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=cnnnrschr&id=I13 Thank you, Brad Aumick aumickb@yahoo.com __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? 3. Any information regarding Nicholas Carter born in KY (poss. Nelson Cty) in the 1790s, married to Helena (Elainey, Elviney) Whitfield (Whitefield, Whitfill), born around 1800, or his offspring (including my ancestor Joseph T. born 1823 in Indiana) will be most welcome. Nicholas *may* have been a son of Abednego, born ca 1771, possibly in KY. Also, I would be thrilled beyond belief if anyone knows what happened to my g-aunt Mary Ann Carter, born in Oregon in 1865 to my g-g grandmother Laura Ann Carter and an unidentified man of African descent. She is shown in the 1880 census, but drops out of sight after that. Last, if anyone knows anything about a woman named Belle Carter, also born in 1865 in Oregon, who did time in the state penitentiary there, I'd be interested in knowing her story. Thanks for your attention, JKH

As a newbie I would appreciate a succinct summary of what to post when I know so little about my grandmother, e.g. IGI date of marriage, places she lived but no known dates of birth or death. Thanks. Jane , granddaughter of Mary Jane Carter, married in 1892 to Jacob Curtis and lived in Braxton and Lewis Co. WV (possibly Gilmer County, also).

    1. CARTER, Solomon
    2. Lynn Marion
    3. Nancy Bower, This is what I have on Solomon CARTER, who is related to Capt Thomas CARTER, Sr. through his son Thomas, Jr. an Arabella WILLIAMSON. Solomon was born 25 Sept 1739, King George Co, VA the son of Peter CARTER and Judith NORRIS, he married Mary Anne BICKLEY in 1760 in Amherst Co, VA. Solomon died 18 Sept 1788 in Amherst Co, VA. Their children were: William, Abraham, Milla (married Mr. Davis), Peter, Sallie, Elisha, Patty, Nancy I know nothing regarding any of the children with the exception of William Henry CARTER, b 21 Aug 1760, Amherst Co, VA, died 15 Oct 1842, Ohio Co, Kentucky. I do not know whom William married and have just followed one of his children Abraham who married Elizabeth FELIX and is buried Boston, Daviess, KY. It does show that at least one member of Solomon's family went to Texas. If any of this relates to what you have it would be your connection to Thomas CARTER, Sr. Lynn Marion

    2. Lisa
    3. Hi All: I am glad to see activity on this list also! I wanted to put my brickwall info out there again and see if anyone new to this may connect to this line as well. I am looking for the parents and siblings for John Lester Carter, born in Tennessee (Macon or Sumner), 9/16/1861 and died 3/25/1946 in Allen County, KY. He married Cornelia Hodges, born 3/1/1863 in Tazewell (Clairbourne County), TN, and died 9/25/1891 in KY. John L. Carter and Corneila Hodges had 4 children, 1 son and 3 daughters: Nana A. Carter, Female born 9/12/1880, Bertha Wright Carer, Male born 10/21/1882, Nina G. Carter, Female born 4/30/1886, and Fannie A. Carter, Female, date of birth not known. John L. later married Eliza A. Miller. John Lester Carter's death certificate indicates his father's name is John Carter (of which there are many) born TN and his mother, Jane Carter born Illinois. I believe John married his cousin Jane. I know John L was born in TN, however, I cannot locate any information on this family, census or otherwise. Is there anyone out there that may have information or a link to this family? I would love to hear from you. Thank you very much! Best wishes, Lisa --------------------------------- Yahoo! 3. My brickwall is Wiley J Carter born in Lincoln Co TN in 1837. I am told that he came to Alabama from Missouri but I have searched the Missouri census for 1850 and 60 and can find no record of him there. I have seen the name Hiley Carter in some records and wonder if there may have been an error in the spelling. My Wiley Carter went by the name W J in his later years and died in 1910. He lost his right leg in the Battle of Peachtree Creek in the civil war. Jim Carter __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! 1. [ADMINISTRATIVE NOTE]
    2. Truthfully, my experience is that sometimes I have to walk away from my research for a little while, just to take a short mental break. I have a couple of roadblocks, but my most frustrating one is my Carter roadblock! I feel that I am so close to determining my ancestor's origins, and yet I can't quite get there. Over the years, I've been able to sort through some conflicting information, I have some very strong hunches, and I know that I have made some progress. While that makes me feel good, it's also makes me need to focus on other things when I begin to get a cycle of useless information again. In my opinion, breaks from research or not, it's important to read the information on this mailing list. Every once in a while, something will catch my eye, and I wonder... I'm putting together my roll call for Thornton Carter, VA, (1778), and will post it shortly. I appreciate all of the work that our administrator does, and I'm happy to answer this very honest question. The list is important; sometimes we're just silently watching! Carolyn

    2. Still looking for parents and siblings of Joseph Carter b 1800 Virginia, probably Amherst County. I have found a Nelson County Carter connection to my Stinnett line. I am wondering if my Joseph Carter belongs to that line. Thanks to John Douglas who posted info on Shadrack Carter, I may have a clue to my Joseph. A Gertrude Carter b 1877 married Richard Dewey Stinnett III. about 1900. Her mother Delia and brother Joshua were living with them in the 1920 census. I traced them back to Nelson Co Va. They descend from the Sharack Carter line. There was only one Joseph and he is the wrong one. I am wondering if my Joseph was born out of wedlock? He married Belsora Elizabeth Lavender in 1833 in Amherst Co Va. Since Nancy Ann Carter daughter of Shadrak, married Winston Lavender there may be a connection. Joseph and Belsora's daughter was Mary Jane Carter c 1838 in Amherst. She married Richard Dewey Stinnett Jr, born 1830 Jospeh was in Rockbridge in 1840. He was in Botetourt in 1850 and 1860. He died before the 1870 census. The Richard Stinnett who married Gertrude Carter was the son of Richard Dewey Stinnett Jr and Mary Jane Carter. There is American Indian in this line. Richard and Mary Jane Carter Stinnett had a daughter Emma Elizabeth Stinnett who married her second cousin Henry Jackson Stinnett. Emma was Indian so it may have come from the Carter's. The Lavender's, Carter's, Staples, Penn, Blair's, Stratton's and Allen's were all from Amherst. I have been trying to locate the parents of Sarah Penn born 1730 who married Samuel Staples. Sarah may also have been Indian. Can anyone help with these lines??? I have very little info on the names above. A lot of them moved out of state. Thanks for any help at all. Jackie Spirit Seeker
