My Carter line is as follows: Henry Carter, born abt 1775 in NC, married 11/10/1797 to Martha Parham in Wilkes County, NC. Henry died between 1870 and 1880 in Gilmer County, GA. Children: 1) Sarah Carter, born 8/1810 in Haywood County, NC. Married Samuel Jefferson Thompson 5/1828 in Buncombe County, NC. Died 11/23/1900 in Gilmer County, GA. Buried at Oak Hill Methodist Cemetery, Gilmer County, GA. Samuel died 2/14/1860 in Gilmer County, buried at Baxter Cemetery. I have names of children should anyone be interested. 2) Elizabeth Carter, born abt 1812 in North Carolina. Married Nelson Carter (perhaps a cousin?) abt 1830. Nelson was the son of William Carter and Rebecca Sourjohn. Nelson was born abt 1797. He had a sister named Morning Carter. Rebecca is said to be Cherokee. Elizabeth Carter disappears from census after 1880. She and Nelson were living in Dawson County, GA in 1880 census. Nelson died abt 1887. I have names of children if anyone is interested. 3) Martha A. (Patsy) Carter, born abt 1815 in North Carolina. Married Caswell Carl Johnston Southerland 7/26/1837 in Haywood County, NC. Last census they were found in was 1880 for Cherokee, NC. Again, should anyone be interested, I have names of children. 4) My line: Preshus Mannerva Carter, born abt 1825 in NC. Preshus married Nathaniel Green Felmet on 8/17/1837 in Haywood County, NC. Preshus died between 1860-1867, probably in Gilmer County, GA. Interesting note is that after her death, Nathaniel remarried to Martha Ann Carter, who was a daughter of Nelson and Elizabeth Carter. My line is through Preshus and Nathaniel's daughter, Harriet Ansenlea Felmet, who married James M. Baugh. If anyone is interested in this line, please contact me for further information. 5) George B. Carter, born abt 1830 in North Carolina, probably Buncombe County. He married Nancy Ellison on 9/9/1852 in Gilmer County, GA. I find George and family in the 1860 census for Fannin County, GA, then they dissappear. I have names of children born before 1860. Sure would like to know what became of this family group! Would be interested in contact with anyone interested in any line of the family. I am still searching for parents of Henry Carter. Dora Savage Albrecht -- No virus found in this outgoing message. My gr-grandmother was Alice Hannah Carter. She married Hiram Williams in Cumberland Co., KY on July 16, 1881. Alice was born Aug 3, 1865 in Cumberland Co., KY (we think). Her father is said to have been Clinton Carter and we do not know her mother's given name, but her maiden name was Turner. Hiram and Alice moved to Grayson Co., TX between Dec. 1890 and May 1893. They stayed in Grayson Co. until 1900 when they moved to Hopkins Co., TX, where they lived until their deaths. Alice had a sister named Melia/Mela/Amelia who married Alfred Anderson in KY. They also went to Texas about the same time as Alice and Hiram and finally stayed in Hopkins Co., TX, where they are buried. We think there were at least 2 other children, Jane and John. This has not been confirmed as yet. Any help with this line will be greatly appreciated. Nancy Ann Webb McLaughlin

I think it means that people right now aren't actively researching their Carter line. I still subscribe to this list. Sometimes it is active. It only takes one question to start it moving again. My Carters were in Halifax County, NC, from about 1750 to 1820 when they moved to Sumner County, TN and Allen County, KY. Right now I am not actively researching my Carters but another line. I read every Carter message just in case it pertains to my line. A couple of other Lists that I am on are involved in the DNA testing, which has increased the emails. With the Carters, the DNA part is on another List. gayle braswell ellison ----- Original Message ----- From: <deliaesther@att.net> To: <CARTER-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, March 18, 2006 6:13 PM Subject: Re: [CARTER-L] [ADMINISTRATIVE NOTE] Checking & Testing......... > Hi all, > What Mr. Colby says is correct, Rootsweb does not close down mailing > lists. > > I run 4 Rootsweb lists myself and I find that a lot of lists I am a member > of(which are many) or I run are slow often, that does not mean they are > not useful there are always times when things pick up some. > > God bless, > Beth > > > > -------------- Original message from "Ronald Colby" > <rmcolby@micro-net.com>: -------------- > > >> Rootsweb doesn't close lists >> >> >> ----- Original Message ----- >> From: "Chuck Carter" >> To: >> Sent: Saturday, March 18, 2006 5:12 PM >> Subject: [CARTER-L] [ADMINISTRATIVE NOTE] Checking & Testing......... >> >> >> Questions regarding the Status of the following family discussion groups: >> >> CARTER Family Disucssion Lists >> HARDIN Family Discussion Lists >> WALLACE Family Discussion Lists >> >> These lists, when I formed them 10 years ago (in 1996) used to be very >> active. I have lost most of my Carter research, so must begin again. My fathers mother was Martha Mary Carter, her husband was William Preston Phillips - both from southern Indiana around the Noblesville-Sheridan area. She was born in 1875, and was Williams second wife. She was called "May" and always signed her name as May C. Phillips. Hope someone is familiar with this line. Many thanks, Kathryn

For my opinion, the CARTER list is valuable. I don't mind if no emails come through for a week or so. I'm still joined and when someone DOES join the list or mail a message, I look out in the hope my SUSSEX connection will make a mention. My only disappointment I have with the list is most postings are for American families, and I have no interest in that. This is of course totally personal and not a reflection on the list! My ancestors came from Sussex and migrated to Australia. If neither of those are mentioned in the message, I delete it. For my opinion, the CARTER list is still valuable. It isn't that the list isn't relevant or out used its usefulness. I think it is more that people have many more alternatives these days and may not want to be a part of the email swapping format. I don't recommend cancelling the group. Just an Aussie's opinion. Lynette Begg P.O. Questions regarding the Status of the following family discussion groups: CARTER Family Disucssion Lists HARDIN Family Discussion Lists WALLACE Family Discussion Lists These lists, when I formed them 10 years ago (in 1996) used to be very active. As of late, I rarely see any traffic and don't think there has been a message in weeks. Is it worthwhile keeping these lists active? Have they become obsolete with the advent of the web based message boards of a number of years back and should they be closed down? Even I am not as active in the day to day use & management of these family lists as I used to be. I'm asking because I need your opinion. Please don't be shy, your participation is needed. When I initially started on my journey tracing my family background, ancestors, etc, I found these lists very helpful in my endeavors. Have they out lived their usefulness?
