    1. Re: [CARTER-L] James CARTER of Loudoun Co., VA
    2. This looks interesting. I'm looking for family connections to Agnes Carter, who m James Madison Helm (sometimes Helms) in Knox Co OH in 1836. The Helm family lived in Guernsey Co OH at this time, was originally from Frederick Co VA & KY. Agnes & James M Helm moved to Grant Co IN about 1843 and Champaign Co IL about 1854. Agnes approx dates are 1815-1890. In a directory in Champaign, she lists her place of origin as Loudoun Co, and her census entries always give her birthplace as VA. We know almost nothing about her - in the family plot, her gravestone is the only one missing (vandalized years ago, not recovered). I believe they were married by a Universalist minister named Truman Strong (he was Universalist later - not sure about 1835). I haven't been able to connect Agnes Carter Helm to any Carters in Knox Co OH. There are several families, but she doesn't fit in. The state law at the time was that a marriage had to take place in the bride's county of residence. Don't know if that was strictly followed, but Knox Co OH makes no sense for James Helm. One of their sons married a Quaker woman, and one of their grandsons did also; several of their children went to a Quaker boarding school in Indiana, altho they don't seem to have been Quakers themselves. I'm descended from some Carter Quakers (the marriage above) with VA connections but no known link to Agnes Carter. James Madison Helm's brother George Washington Helm m Nancy Carter in Guernsey Co (Baptist minister) in 1833 or 35. Nancy also has a Loudoun Co connection - her father is Levi Carter, who enlisted in the army in 1812 in Loudoun Co. I can't place him with any particular family either. There is good evidence he is not the father of my Agnes Carter, from his estate records in the 1870's, which seem to indicate all their children. -----Original Message----- From: Miriam H. 1. [ADMINISTRATIVE ITEM] WELCOME to the CARTER Family mailing list.
    2. Chuck Carter
    3. %%%%%%%% WELCOME %%%%%%%% WELCOME to the CARTER Family mailing list. You are currently subscribed in "MAIL mode", which means that you will receive every posting made to CARTER as a separate e-mail. The directions on how to change to digest mode are given below. This is a discussion area for anyone who has an interest in Genealogy or History related to the CARTER Family, including CARTER, CARTIER, McCARTER or any other related spelling, etc. My name is Charles E. ("Chuck") Carter, and I'm the owner of this list. I'm responsible for keeping it running as smoothly as possible and setting some rules and guidelines. %%%%%%%% GENERAL %%%%%%%% * Please keep this message. I recommend that you keep a copy on file in your computer as well as a printed paper copy that you can easily find. * You may see some new terms and prases here along with exacting instructions about sending commands, etc. You will get used to it soon enough - don't let it bother you. In order to make things work well, you must follow the instructions - to the letter. If you leave something out of a command or put something extra in, it won't work. This is because of the way computer programs work. * Remember these addresses: * If you need help, contact ME. My address is: cetracer@comcast.net * To post a message to this list, I.e. Genealogical data, queries, etc (stuff you want other members to read) send it to: CARTER-L@rootsweb.Com * To subscribe or unsubscribe, send a message to: CARTER-L-request@rootsweb.com ( for the MAIL mode ) or CARTER-D-request@rootsweb.com ( for DIGEST mode ) %%%%%%%% RULES %%%%%%%% * This list is for the discussion of Genealogy and History, primarily regarding CARTER and related families. Discussion of migration patterns, immigration, healdry, historical sketches, CARTER settlements, census data, wills, family Bibles, vital records, web sites, etc., as relates to the CARTER family is encouraged as well as discussion of collateral families. Public announcements of information of interest to Genealogists in general, thought it may not be CARTER specific is permitted, but please use discretion. * Do not post virus warnings, test messages, chain letters, political announcements, current events, items for sale, personal messages, etc. For information on virus hoaxes and urban legends, see: http://www.kumite Com/myths/ among others. * Please do not send attachments (messages with files appended) to the list. If you have a file you would like to share with members, announce what you have to offer, then send the file only to those who request it, via private email. There are many CARTER branches, and not everyone will want the data on your file. * No rude comments or flaiming in this list! No discussion of flaming in the list. For definitions of flaming and related information, see: http://www.man.ac.uk/~zisiira/Netiquette/flame.html and http://www.pass.wayne.edu/~twk/flaming.HTML * Do not impose any other rules or conditions, expressed or implied elsewhere, upon this list. Rules for other forums may not necessarily apply here. Do not try to regulate this list. If you do not like the way someone formats their queries or responses, or the content of their subject titles, take it up with the listowner (ME), NOT in the list. The list is for Genealogy and History. * Advertising. Technically, RootsWeb has a "no commercial use" policy. Like all RootsWeb policies, though, the last thing that we want is for policy to get in the way of our doing genealogy. Therefore, the CARTER Family list will accept brief announcements of books and other resource material for sale that is specifically related to this county. Don't include prices and ordering info; just include a pointer to a URL, a commercial mailing list, or an e-mail address where the complete ordering information can be found. In case In case of doubt, send the message to the me, Charles E. Carter, list custodian, at < cetracer@comcast.net >, and I'll review it and forward it to the list if appropriate. * Copyrights. Any person sending a message to this list retains the copyright to it. By sending the message, you grant to the list custodian, and to his heirs and assigns forever, permission to distribute copies of the message to other list members, to store archival copies of the message, and to make the archival copies available to the Internet community at large. You also grant to other list members the right to quote your message in part or in total as a part of their replies sent back to the list. %%%%%%%% GUIDLINES %%%%%%%% * Small gedcom files are discouraged but not banned from the list (send in a message, NOT as a file attachment) as long as the resulting message is no larger than 61,440 bytes maximum. * Try to keep quoting to a minimum. "Quoting" is repeating text of the message you are replying to. Some quoting is necessary to remind other readers what the thread is about, but do try to use good judgement. Quoting the previous writer's signature block or surname list is totally unnecessary * Surname lists are okay, but please try to limit them to say, half a dozen names. Any more than that and many people just won't read them. Try keeping several small lists and rotate them with each succeeding message. %%%%%%%% SUBSCRIPTIONS %%%%%%%% * Subscription commands to to: CARTER-L-request@rootsweb.com - or - CARTER-D-request@rootsweb.com I repeat, to subscribe or to unsubscribe send an email to: CARTER-L-request@rootsweb.com - or - CARTER-D-request@rootsweb.com and put subscribe (and nothing else) or unsubscribe (and nothing else) in the body of the message. Please remember, commands go to: CARTER-L-request@rootsweb.com - or - CARTER-D-request@rootsweb.com and not to the list! You can use CAPS or lowercase, it doesn't matter. %%%%%%%% POSTING MESSAGES %%%%%%%% * To post a message (query, reply or other CARTER data) to the list, send it to: CARTER-L@rootsweb.com It also helps to remember to put something in the "subject line". %%%%%%%% TIPS %%%%%%%% * Accuracy is important and sources are vital. Ancestor lists are worthless if the information is wrong. * All information need not be accompanied by source citations, but I do recommend strongly that posts either include sources or a note stating that they are available on request. * If information is speculation, then label it as such until it is proven or commonly accepted as fact. * When posting your query, try to give as much informaiton as you know, I.e. dates and places of all vital events, if known, along with enough other readers can positively identify if they are researching the same family. Anyone out there researching CARTER's?" just doesn't cut it! * When replying to the list (this can also apply to "private" replies), try to quote some portions of the previous message so that othe readers are reminded what the "thread" is about. Make it clear what is quoted material and what you are adding. Most mail readers take care of this for you be inserting greater-than signs ">" at the beginning of each quoted line or possibly double brackets "<<" before and ">>" after the quoted piece. Use standard Windows procedures to "cut" unnecessary material. * Post your query frequently, perhaps once a month, if you have not yet found your ancestor. New people are joining the list all the time and they may have the information you need. * Please send CARTER replies to the list, not just to the original poster. Other members may benefit from the data you provide. %%%%%%%% FURTHER INFORMATION %%%%%%%% See the following URL's for information on Genealogy lists: http://users.aol.com/johnf/14246/gen_mail.htm http://www.rootsweb.com/~maillist %%%%%%%% ABOUT ROOTSWEB %%%%%%%% RootsWeb was founded in 1996 by Dr. Brian Leverich and Karen Isaacson. 1. [ADMINISTRATIVE ITEM] Some messages you will be receiving..........
    2. Chuck Carter
    3. Hello, It's been a long time since I last sent out the messages you will soon be receiving. #1: SUGGESTED GUIDELINES TO GET ANSWERS, and also proper etiquette in sending & responding to email messages on the list. They are not new, I've used these suggestions for at least the last 10 years since the lists were organized. I did not write them, Tim Carter, who was a member of the original CARTER Family list authored the original message. He gave me permission to use the same and I've found it quite useful. So, when it comes please read it and try to use some of the suggestions. One of the MAJOR COMPLAINTS I've received lately, and to be blunt, it annoys me also, is the failure to change subject lines. When someone posts a message to the list, rather than changing the subject line (if the subject changes), many will continue to tag on that same subject. Even if it has no bearing on the content of their post. Please, use the appropriate subject line, I guarantee it will increase the chances of your message being read. Also, when replying to a message, please try to <------------<snip>---------------> out unnecessary text. Again, it will increase the chances your message will be read. Finally, #2: Everyone is going to receive an undated copy of the WELCOME MESSAGE to the particular list. If you haven't read it for a while, once again, please take time and read it. 1. [ADMINISTRATIVE ITEM] SUGGESTED GUIDELINES to HELP GET ANSWERS
    2. Chuck Carter
    3. SUGGESTED GUIDELINES to HELP GET ANSWERS by Tim Carter If I am going to be a writer and try to get your attention so that you will help me, I must be courteous to you; I must be thoughtful enough to present materials in such a manner as to get and keep your attention; I must write my material in a way that makes it fast, easy, and pleasant to read. With these thoughts in mind, consider that the following are NOT RULES, but they are SUGGESTED GUIDELINES for use by genealogy researchers. Also, if you are a member/user on a list which has an owner or moderator who specifies how to post to that particular list, please, try to post to that list in accordance with his/her instructions. 1) What are you talking about? What is your Subject? 2) Are you shouting at the reader? 3-7) Typing names so they are easy to read. 8) Where and How to Reply. 9-10) Flaming. 11) Are you less considerate and more disrespectful than the flamer? than the sympathizers? 12) You want to reply, but, Are You Ready? 1) Do you really want me to read your message? Many users of the lists use the subject line to speed up their search. Messages with blank subject lines are deleted in bulk before any reading is attempted. Both the sender and the receiver have "lost" when a connection they have for each other is not made because of a subject omitted. 2) Generally, type everything in lower case (small) letters. Typing everything in ALL CAPS is considered SHOUTING AT THE READER. 3) ALWAYS type SURNAMES in upper case (CAPITAL) letters. 4) When listing SURNAMES only, enter a comma and two spaces between the names. This makes for faster, easier reading: CARTER, DELOACH, KIRBY, LEE, PEDRON (PLEASE, do not space between letters of the name, and do not use special characters within a name) 5) DO NOT use the asterisk * or the slash / as a separator of SURNAMES. Use this same rule for applying other special characters in your writings. This is hard on the eyes, and some of us won't read it. Therefore, you and I might miss a perfect opportunity to find a connection to one of the names we are both researching. 6) Generally, type names as follows: SURNAME, First Second Third "Nickname" Title (Although it won't always work out this way, try to make it a standard way of writing names.) Example: CARTER, Elisha Joseph Goodwin "Joe" Rev 7) When listing SURNAMES with locations, try to make the listings as columns if possible. At least enter some spaces to make for easier, faster reading: CARTER > NC, SC, MS, AR LEE > NC, SC, TN, AR JONES > FL, AL, TN, GA OWENS > NC, GA, LA KIRBY > AR WOOD > TN,AR Realize that the progression of states is not meant to be alphabetical, but represents the general movement (or migration) of the family or individual being researched, and are the locations being searched. 8) When you reply (respond) to a message received on a list, PLEASE, be aware of where your reply is going "before you send it.". Some of the lists are set up so the REPLY automatically returns your message to the list. Other lists automatically return your replies to the originator of the message. AGAIN, PLEASE double check the return address where you are sending the answer to that post. A BIG THANK YOU for your help on this. 9) Please, DO NOT flame someone (put them down rather rudely) for something they have done. The individual may be new and did not realize what was correct and proper. Or, an individual can be in a hurry and just do things wrong. (Personally, I do not wish to reduce <degrade> myself to the low level of flaming someone. I have been flamed and know how bad it made me feel, even though I had not intended to hurt or upset anyone.) Consider that in most instances the act is not on purpose, but accidental. If you must reply, be courteous, polite, and positive and send them a private note. 10) Above all, DO NOT flame someone publicly on one of the lists. It is bad manners on the part of the person doing the flaming, and shows disrespect toward all other members of the list. (They do not want to hear the flamer's whining about what someone has supposedly done to the flamer or to them. That is why there are always so many rude, ill-natured replies afterwards.) 11) Do you reply to the flamer, and send it to the list? Then, you have been more disrespectful to fellow list members than was the flamer. You have become a part of the continuing nuisance to the list. Does someone have a loss, and accidentally post it to the list? Are you one of the sympathizers that also post your condolences to the list? You have become a part of the continuing nuisance to the list. Are you one of those that posts to the list in anger or dismay, trying to get the sympathizers to stop posting? You have added fuel to the fire - you helped increase the problem. Please stop and think before posting ANY OFF SUBJECT REPLY to a list. 12) Do you really want to flame someone? Go look in the mirror. That person you are looking at knows exactly how you feel and what you are thinking. Therefore, that person knows exactly how to take what you are saying. Furthermore, if that person in the mirror smiles at you, you are going to have to smile back. And, if you smile at the person in the mirror and that person in the mirror does not smile back at you, you are not ready to write to anyone yet. Now, let's work together and find some genealogy answers. Thank you. Charles E. ("Chuck") Carter cetracer@comcast.net Listowner / Moderator CARTER-L@rootsweb.com HARDIN-L@rootsweb.com WALLACE-L@rootsweb.com ************************************************************** "The journey of a thousand miles must begin with one step" Lao Tzu **************************************************************

    3. George can you tell me where Samuel Carter lived and his time frame? I am going to add more on Daniel Carter and maybe someone will recognize him. He was a witness to a deed in Goochland County in 1746 from Henry Trent to Robert Goode along with Bennett Goode and Thomas Turpin. He went to Henrico County for the trial of William Day against Poval Carter. Povai Carter l, paid him and a Giles Carter for 2 days attendance and traveling 37 miles twice and ferriage. Henrico County Court Orders pg 157 June 1757. (Robert Carter in Cumberland County had a son Giles. ) Daniel was a an overseer for John Pleasants in Cumberland County. In 1763. he was a witness to a deed when John Pleasants Sr. and Jr. sold 800 acres to Joseph Calland and Maurice Langhorne. He was in various trials as a witness. He bought 100 acres from Hezekiah and his son Daniel Mosby, Hezekiah inherited from his father- in-law Nicholas Cox. A Giles Carter was a witness to a land transaction of Nicholas to John Martin then in Henrico in 1728. The land Daniel bought in 1775 was on Maple Swamp which fell into Powhatan County. One of his Daniel's sons was John B. Carter who was born 11 February 1758. He married Elizabeth Mosby. According to his pension application John was a son of Daniel and Jane? John was not in Daniel's will although he was on executor's bond. Daniel's children named in his will were Charles Carter, Povall Carter ll, born 1762, Susannah Carter married William Talley in 1788, Frances Carter married William Sallee in 1796. George Sallee married Ann Carter 1800, and Milley Carter married John Jesse in 1805. In the marriages of George Sallee and William Sallee, Benjamin Carter was a witness to both marriages. Povall Carter married Martha Davis in 1792. She was a daughter of William Davis, deceased , and Elizabeth. He moved to Prince Edward County where some of his Davis kinfolks were living . Jenny Carter , another daughter of Daniel's, married Alexander Trent in 1808 in Prince Edward. Wilson Carter a son of Povall ll who married Sarah Davis a daughter of Jesse Davis in Cumberland County in 1815. He lived and died in Prince Edward County. He was a grandson of Daniel Carter.

I am reasonably sure his father was John Carter, 1787-1850, NC. John died in Tippah County in 1850. He apparently spent time in Tennessee as James S. was born in Tennessee and it is assumed in Lincoln County and moved to Tippah County between 1840 and 1850. They apparently did not leave much of a footprint prior to 1850 as I can find very little in Tennessee or North Carolina. If anyone has any information on this Carter line please contact me at jcarter3@Cox.net. Thanks! -----Original Message----- From: The Wolf [mailto:f58905@knology.net] Sent: Monday, March 20, 2006 8:19 AM To: CARTER-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [CARTER-L] Carter in Mississippi I am looking for any and all Carter families in Mississippi. 3. This Carter family has been my brick wall for over 20 years. My great-grandmother was AMELIA BERTHA CARTER b. Jan. 28, 1872 in Coshocton County, OH. She married SETH DAVID BUTLER, the son of DAVID CHRISTY BUTLER (first governor of the state of NE) in Pawnee City, Pawnee County, NE on March 29, 1891. AMELIA BERTHA was the daughter of JAMES W. CARTER and NANCY ADAMS (supposedly descendant of President ADAMS but no proof). JAMES was born Oct. 6, 1850 in Coshocton County, OH. NANCY was born Sept. 8, 1851 in Coshocton County, OH. Other children of JAMES and NANCY were: 1. NANCY BLANCHE CARTER (AMELIA's twin who died in infancy) 2. MAUD CARTER b. Jan. 2, 1876 3. ROBERT JAMES CARTER b. Nov. 10, 1883 All of the above were born in Coshocton County, OH. JAMES W. CARTER was the son of WILLIAM CARTER b. 1822 in VA and CHARLOTTE SMITH b. 1824 in OH. The siblings of JAMES W. CARTER were: 1. ELIZABETH CARTER b. 1845 in OH 2. SANFORD CARTER b. 1846 in OH 3. FRANCES CARTER b. 1848 in OH If anyone has any connection to this family, please contact me. 3. Betty, You may well remember better than me. We will see what the others recall. May get several different versions. You are probably right about who attended the event. 1. Roll Call - Elijah in Spotsylvania Co. VA
    2. Kay Adams
    3. We also joined Carter-cousins. Our family is Elijah, #45620 going back to Wm. Carter and Mary Goodloe. I am still searching for the right Joseph - father of Elijah. And I'm trying to find info on Landon N. Carter as possible father of Kemp Goodloe Carter, my gggrandfather. Landon N. was an officer in the U.S. Marines from 1824 to 1847. He died in Norfolk VA Sept 26, 1847. He came from Virginia Springs I think in Craig Co. VA.
