Hello, I am looking for info or even a person who may still be living, they would be in their 80's or early 90's I think... If I am lucky their 70's In 1926 Margaret (childrens mother) gave the children to the Childrens Services for placement for what ever reason she living with her Mother ( kids grandmother ) did not work out, and she was not able to care for them. Gerald Carter was placed in a childrens home and later moved to Chicago.. I dont know when, this is what I was told. Albert Carter brother to Gerald was in the same Miami County childrens home in Ohio ... he served in WW2 in Europe in the army and brought back a war bride named Marie I think. They lived somewhere in Grass County California back in the 50s'... He also worked in a gold mine out there. Had children but don't know how many. Vesta Carter Passed away in 1986 in Miami County Ohio. All three children where sibs. They are my grandmothers sibs as well. Grandmother was adopted but knew her brothers and sisters. I have picture of them all together. She would have been the baby born 4 yrs after Vesta. My grandmother was murdered when she was just 31 when my father was only 5 yrs old. so there is no information about her except in a few photos I received from my grandfather before he passed away. Any assistance would be great. These children (my great great uncles) where the children of Firman/Freeman Preston Carter and Margaret Martin who died in a TB sanitarium in the 50s in Los Angelus California. Oh also while the boys where in the Childrens home, they where Visited by Susan Waterhouse and Grace Smith... Susan raised Vesta and Grace raised my grandmother Mary Madeline who later married a veterinarian. I believe Preston died in Toledo Ohio in eather late 40s or early 50s. Vesta married a Tillman I think. Thankyou Tonya
I find that it is Usually helpful to work both Father's & Mothers Families. So Sugestion, SUBSCRIBE to the Duncan Family List, Maybe there were not many Duncan's Marrying Carter's, THAT could narrow your search. A T < atpoweljr@aol.com>
First...my apologies for laughing. A "William Carter" has also been my brick wall. I have found all of his descendants, but can't seem to find who his parents were. Hang in there...I and cousins have resorted to DNA testing to sort this out. Perhaps that will be the route for you as well. -----Original Message----- >From: RAGANJE@aol.com >Sent: May 11, 2006 3:31 PM >To: CARTER-L@rootsweb.com >Subject: [CARTER-L] WILLIAM CARTER > >I rue the day I discovered that my great grandfather's name was WILLIAM >CARTER because there are virtually no Carter lines that don't have several >William Carter's in them. I rue the day I discovered that my great grandfather's name was WILLIAM CARTER because there are virtually no Carter lines that don't have several William Carter's in them. I know almost nothing about mine and that makes searching nearly impossible for such a common name. Perhaps someone can help. WILLIAM CARTER married MARY ELIZABETH (LIZZIE) CARTER on Aug. 3, 1886, in Shelby City, Boyle Co., KY. Mary is shown in the 1880 census at age 14 yrs living with her parents, James and Mary Duncan in Boyle Co., KY. In the 1900 census she is listed as a widow living with her own children in Boyle Co., KY., and living next door to her father, James T. Duncan, also a widower. The marriage certificate states that William Carter and J. T. Duncan were listed as the principal and surety for the marriage of William and Lizzie. I am assuming that the principal, William Carter, would be Lizzie's husband's father as J. T. Duncan is Lizzie's father. Unfortunately we have another William. No middle names are known although my grandmother is known to have said she thought her father's name might have been Edward. Perhaps she is remembering his middle name. She stated that he died when she was very young and she couldn't remember. I have no knowledge of WILLIAM CARTER's parents, where he was from, when he was born, or when he died although it appears he died prior to the 1900 census. I have personally searched the library in Frankfort, KY, where all genealogical records for that state seem to be filed, I have visited Boyle County and the surrounding territory, and I have attempted to search known grave sites of family members (found at the Frankfort library) for WILLIAM's gravesite. All I have found is that the cemeteries are completely overgrown and inaccessible, the records either burned or are not available. WILLIAM is my brick wall as several distant cousins who I have found via this message board have not been able to find him either. If anyone out there could link me up to this particular WILLIAM CARTER I would be grateful. I enjoy reading about all the Carters in surrounding states but only once have I found any family in Kentucky. This state doesn't seem to have attracted as many Carters as the southern and midwest states. How did William's family get to Kentucky? What branch did they descend from? How do you search for someone with such a common name when you have nothing to go on? If only there was an 1890 census to place William on an actual census record I might be able to learn more about his parents and their birthplaces or even William's birthplace! Thanks for your help, Judy Ragan, Simi Valley, CA
Looking for info on William CARTER, who's mentioned in an online biography for Joseph Henry SAVERY at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~orgenweb/bios/jsavery.html According to J.H. SAVERY's biography: William CARTER led an emigrant train which left Iowa 23 April 1853, and arrived in October, the same year, in Oregon. The members of the emigrant train parted company 23 Oct. 1853 in Perrydale, Polk Co. Oregon. Thank you, Brad Aumick aumickb@yahoo.com __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? THE CENSUS TAKER It was the first day of census, and all through the land The pollster was ready..a black book in hand He mounted his horse for a long dusty ride His book and some quills were tucked close by his side A long winding ride down a road barely there Toward the smell of fresh bread wafting, up through the air The woman was tired, with lines on her face And wisps of brown hair she tucked back into place She gave him some water...as they sat at the table And she answered his questions...the best she was able He asked of her chidren...Yes, she had quite a few The oldest was twenty, the youngest not two She held up a toddler with cheeks round and red His sister, she whispered, was napping in bed He noted each person who lived there with pride And she felt the faint stirrings of the wee one inside He noted the sex, the color, the age The marks from the quill soon filled up the page At the number of children, she nodded her head And saw her lips quiver for the three that were dead The places of birth she "never forgot" Was it Kansas? or Utah? or Oregon...or not? They came from Scotland, of that she was clear But she wasn't quite sure just how long they'd been here They spoke of employment, of schooling and such They could read some and write some...though really not much When the questions were answered, his job there was done So he mounted his horse and he rode toward the sun We can almost imagine his voice loud and clear "May God bless you all for another ten years" Now picture a time warp...its' now you and me As we search for the people on our family tree We squint at the census and scroll down so slow As we search for that entry from long, long ago Could they only imagine on that long ago day that the entries they made would effect us this way? If they knew, would they wonder at the yearning we feel And the searching that makes them so increasingly real We can hear if we listen the words they impart Through their blood in our veins and their voice in our heart Author Unknown

Can anyone tell me who Woodie C Carter was? He was shown in the household of George Mason Carter, 1900 census of Putnam Co., In. Listed as Nephew of George, 16 years old, which would indicate a birth date of 1884-1885. Any help appreciated. Thanks. Dick Carter rcar37@prodigy.net
