I do NOT have any "proven" Davis descendants from Mary CARTER DAVIS, widow of Thomas DAVIS who married my ancestor Thomas "TOTTY" (NOT Toddy). I have mainly researched my direct line. I do have the book "Giles Carter of Virginia" that I use for reference among other Bk's of Henrico Co., Virginia. I was hoping I would find DAVIS descendant's of Mary on this CARTER-L list. I do have some information on the HUDSPETH's who went to NC, TN, KY. But I do not have Daniel CARTER you are seeking information on. I also have a John DAVIS I believe to be a likely descendant of Mary TOTTY, but can not post information without making an error, so best not to claim anything at this point. I appreciate your comments and hopefully I will be able to start researching My CARTER ancestors more. I have been consentrating on my COMBS family for a long time, trying to find the maiden name of William TOTTY's wife Mary, whom I believe could likely be a COMBS, not proven still. I am becoming burnt out on the COMBS research and wanted a change of pace <VBG>. I would love to hear your info on you you think Hannah may have married after the death of Giles. I never even thought of her getting remarried, duh, maybe I can help you a little. Do you know of any DAVIS descendants of Mary and Thomas? Looking forward to getting to know other CARTER researcher's. Birdie (Totty) McNutt ( ( : ) Birdiemc@juno.com A Proud Rootsweb Donor On Wed, 28 Oct 1998 12:31:05 -0800 "Alfred C. Mentioned there also are Eliza's sisters Violetta, who married into the DEAN family, and Margaret, who married into the MOTT family, and whose son Onward MOTT and family appear to have been living with his Aunt Eliza in the 1900,1910, and 1920 census. Other CARTER brothers of Eliza mentioned also: Robert, Edward, George W, Matthew, Uzziah, Samuel (lived with Eliza's family much of his adult life), and Lawrence.I'm looking for descendants of these CARTERS, STRYKERS and MOTTS. William, I, also, had listed a person as being without issue. My reference of Gyles Carter and wife being without issue was taken from a memorium tablet on the walls of a Church in Glouchestershire, England. Having been placed there by those who knew Gyles, it would seem this reference is accurate. However, if I just found it written somewhere, I would want to back it up with other documentation. Dear All, I want to thank all who have been helping me solve my dilema of too many ancesteries. With Paul Carter's help I zapped one and now with June Cottrell's another bites the dust. June finally provided me with the birthdate of Sherwood Carter's son, Joseph (1775). The Joseph Carter I am looking for was born 1755, I know not where, but he married in Henry Co, VA 1778 , Nancy Menefee. Menefee is a prominent name in Culpeper Co. If anyone is researching in Culpeper Co, drop me a line Lynn Marion
Birdie, Do you have any Davis descendants from Mary (Carter) Davis and then she was Mary (Carter) Davis Toddy but first married to Thomas Davis? Do you have any descendants from Anne (Carter) who married James Davis? Susannah (Carter) Price Williamson who first married Daniel Price is also in the will. These girls were daughters of Giles Carter, I. I am struggling with Davis in Cumberland County. Ralph Hudspeth sold John Davis some land in Goochland County-> Cumberland Co. about 1740. This Davis may be family since Ralph Hudspeth married first Mary Carter dau of Giles Carter, II. James S. Beck did a book published by Family History Publishers of Bountiful, Utah called OBSCURITY named for the Hobson Tract in Cumberland County. His address was 428 North 300 East, Keysville, Ut 84037. The book is mostly family group sheets but some history of his family. He is descended from Mary (Carter) Hudspeth 1st wife of Ralph Hudspeth, Jr who went to NC with Giles Carter, Jr so the report goes. Giles Carter Jr married Mary Povall sometime before 1708. He completely lost me when he stated William Carter who died 1810 in Halifax, NC was a son of Giles Carter and Mary Povall. I asked for proof and he stated his notes had not caught up with his writing. You may want this book. It's cost was $20.00 in 1995. Did Hannah Carter remarry after Giles Carter I death. I have a name in mind but don't want it published because it then becomes fact. You can ask me anything you want. I am searching for Daniel Carter in Cumberland County in 1756 as overseer for John Pleasants. He later was in Powhatan County where he died in 1797 and his son Povall Carter II was executor of his estate. Povall Carter I died in Henrico County in 1760 but he did not name Daniel Carter as one of his children although Daniel testified for him in a suit in Henrico County in 1755/56.
Hi See below, depositions in regard to James CREWES of Virginia. This is the information as taken by me from source posted posted below. I believe if there had been any off spring of James CREWES, then "they" would be the ones to take care of his estate. However as seen below, James CREWES, "niece," only surviving daughter of his brother Edward was the extecutrix of James estate. The other information posted earlier today was from a post received from a CREWES researcher. The following is taken from; Page 18 of "Lord Mayor's Court of London" JAMES CREWES of Virginia 26 September 1677. [Deposition] John Savile of St. Leonard, Shoreditch, Middlesex, weaver aged 72, and Roger Hunt of St. Ethelburg within Bishopsgate, London, citizen and merchant tailor of London, aged 61, depose at the request of MATHEW CREWE of London, citizen and leatherseller, that they know the requestant's son and heir to have been FRANCIS CREWES deceased, late of (named altered and now illegible), Middlesex, silkman, citizen, and grocer of London; who was the brother of Colonel James CREWES, deceased, late of Virginia. 27 September 1677. [Deposition] Arthur Miles of London, scrivener aged 53, and Giles Sussex of London, citizen and gardener of London, age 52, depose at the request of SARAH WHITTINGHAM, alias CREWES, only surviving daughter of Edward CREWES, deceased, formerly of London, merchant, and administrator to Colonel James CREWES, late of Virginia, merchant, that they have known the requestant from her infancy. Her father Edward CREWES was the elder brother of Francis CREWES and Colonel James CREWES. The certificate, now produced, of the ages of Edward, Francis, and James CREWES is taken from the register of St. Pancras, Soper Lane, London. I wanted to tell all of you that I appreciate getting the Giles Carter information. I just found out within the last week that I am a descendant, through daughter Suzanne, who married Thomas Williamson. I have done Carter research for years, looking for ancestors of Isaac (RW soldier, moved to Pike County, MS) and had looked into just about all the lines. Does anyone have more details on the first couple of generations of Giles Carter's family? I am also looking for an Ann Carter, who married William Lee, in Virginia, not sure of exact time frame. She had a son named Giles, and could come from this family also. Thanks, -- ******************* Cynthia Samples Plano, TX http://pw2.netcom.com/~samples Cynthia's Genealogy World

Mea Culpa! I am not from Gyles CARTER line, at least I don't think so. I hope I can be forgiven for using information given to me by someone descended from Gyles. In trying to be a responsible researcher, I am in the process of, hopefully, proving one and disproving 4 other ancestries for my gr gr grandfather, Joseph CARTER, that are floating on the Web and attached to several WFT CDs. At least my error generated activity that may be of invaluable help to others from Gyles line. Anyone who is tracing their CARTER line to Gyles CARTER and Elizabeth TRACY dau of Sir Paul TRACY I have some evidence that this particular Gyles died childless. Lynn Marion

He does not mention any family other than his cousin Mathew who was his executor. My QUESTION, how can anyone state that Hannah wife of GILES CARTER was a daughter of James CREW(E)(S) as fact? FACT: all the records show, James CREW(E)(S) did NOT leave a daughter named Hannah, nor did he have any lawful issue. see below ***** p. 7:161 (CWHCVa) Petition to Court: That Capt. Hi Cousins, Since I am fairly new to the list and have never posted by line, I will do so now with documentation to follow in parts. NOTE: While searching the CARTER-L ARCHIVE's I have noticed many mentions of Giles' wife Hannah, being a CREW(E)(S), which is an ERROR! So many researchers are repeating this information "as though it were fact," which it is NOT, it has been "proven" that James CREW(E)(S) did not leave any ISSUE. Hopefully we can get the record straight for the future researcher's trying to find their roots. Lynn, I have no information on the Joseph Carter you are researching; however, I do have some questions regarding Giles/Gyles Carter and his wife, Hannah. I am a descendant of Giles and Hannah Carter through their son Giles (2). I have been researching this family for several years and have found no documentation that Hannah was a "Crew", "Crews" or "Crewes"! If you have found any documentation that Hannah was either the daughter or relative of James Crewes which has been reported but not proven, please share it with other Carter kin. You will make a lot of us very happy. Bette Picone
