    1. [CARTER-L] Benson, Rutland Co., Vermont
    2. Mary K Ward
    3. My gr gr grandparents, Luman (b. 1795) and Susanna Abigail Carter (b. 1804) both born in Benson, Rutland Co., VT had 7 or 8 children that I found in the LDS (Latter-day Saints) computer file. I've only been able to find two of their children-both born in Vermont- in the Ohio censuses- Charity Carter born 20 May 1833 and my gr grandfather Simeon Jabez Carter born 7June 30. The birthdate for Simeon Jabez Carter was in a family bible. Can you help me find the others? The children as they appear in the LDS -IGI file are as follows: 1. Levina CARTER ....... B: 7 Sep 1826- Kirtland, Lake, Ohio (birthpl. must be incorrect 2. Christiana CARTER..B: Abt 1829 " " " (birthpl. must be incorrect 3. Charity CARTER ......B: 20 May 1833 " " " (birthplace incorrect) 4. Simion CARTER........B: Abt. 1835 " " " (DOB and place incorrect) 5. John CARTER............B: Abt 1837 " " " (can't find him in Ohio) 6. Susannah CARTER..B: Abt 1839 " " " (can't find him in Ohio) 7. Armina CARTER........B: Abt 1842 " " " (I think these last two could 8. Amira CARTER..........B: Abt 1844 " " " be the same person. Can't find her in Ohio). Jabez (81years old) and his son Luman Carter came to Kirtland, Geauga County (later Lake Co.) Ohio from Benson, Vermont with their families, probably in 1833, when Charity was a new born baby and (according to his obituary)- Simeon was 2 years old. What do you suppose happened to the other children? Did they die as infants or as youngsters? In 1833 Levina would have been 7 yrs old, Christiana 4 yrs. old and both would have been born in Vermont. And the rest , John, Susannah, Armina and /or Amira would have been born in Kirtland, Ohio between about 1837 and 1844. Their parents Luman and Susannah Carter stayed, lived and died in Kirtland, Ohio. Jabez and Luman and Susannah are mentioned in old Mormon Church records but I've found none of the children (other than Charity and Simeon) are in any Ohio records. Have you see these names? 3. Dear Cousin Sweet Jazz, HELLO It is wonderful to hear from you. You have just inherited another 20-250 cousins and I would like to share those names with you as well as the wealth of sketchy information you have. Our family before Joel always drew a blank and we felt like orphans never knowing a place or a person to even check out. I will start to research immediatedly and would like to hear more from you. I will send my snail mail address on a private Email line. I have a scanner and many pictures if you are interested. To answer your immediate about these counties. We recently learned that Washington Co was a large thing which was disected after 1850 census. We thought the family was gad abouts but they really just stayed put and widow Mary Carter eventually paid off the land. The post office change addresses all the time down here in FL. Your quote from early history of Washington Co regarding protection of HOUSE, Robert P. etc..made me wonder if it did not mean the family named House (Hansel W) who lived next door to the Carters in that 1850 census. It also fits into information I learned 2 days ago that another neighbor on the other side, John B. Farmer, and Mr. House were all from the same place in Tennessee. I just made contact with Samuel Carter Farmer family in Iowa who recorded that his family always moved west with the Carters(hearsay). Hope to get more history from them Please feel free to continue writing. Long lost Cousins, Sharon Carter Lengfellner SweetJazz5@aol.com wrote: > YES, I have these Carters. 2. YES, I have these Carters. At least I have them in Washington Co. IL.... I don't understand how your 1860 Jefferson Co. can say the same place? The same place as Washington Co. IL??? Why is that? Anyway the Joel A. Carter in Washington Co. I am trying to link up with my Richard P. Carter who died 1849 of fever age 28. I think they are brothers. But this line has been hard to trace. My best guess at this time is that the following Carters: Livesay b. 1798 TN, Martha b. 1810 TN, Robert TN b. 1813, Joel A.. 1820 TN, and Richard P. b 1821 IL are children of Richard P. Carter and Sarah Winrow. Richard P. cart b. Va 1793 d. 1837 Morgan Co . IL is son of Rev. Robert Cater b. Ba 1761 d. IL 1819 Conton Co. m. Alice b. 1759 d 1821 Clinton Co. IL There was movement back and forth from Clinton, Morgan and Washington. I don't have proof for above. Just guessing. Washington Co. early history 1879 book says that 1840 in Richview newcomers HOUSE, Robert Carter were protected by Robert P. Livesay and Joel and Richard Carter.

    3. I noticed something interesting in the information listed below. Thomas Carter who was born in 1855 in Mississippi has as a friend Charley Talliaferro. These same surnames were found in Roane County, TN prior to and after 1855. In fact there were at least two Thomas Carter's in Roane County. Could there be a connection? Thomas Carter's daughter, Mary E. Carter was my ancestor. She married Jessie Pickle on October 9, 1849 in Roane County. The Talliaferro Family lived in the same general area. Sam Talliaferro Rayburn former Texas Congressman was descended from this family. He moved to Texas when he was about four years old. I spent hours today using the search engine at the ukans.edu searching CARTER/HEUSTON family and found some tidbits I hope may help someone out. These two came from Kansas Collection books, Leavenworth County, Part 18, Biographical Sketches. Found them through the City of Leavenworth, Family Histories, site. F. E. CARTER, book-binder, was born in Philadelphia, September 15, 1852. He came West with his parents and located at Freeport, remaining there until he went to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, in 1873, from which city he removed to Leavenworth in February, 1875. He has been engaged in book- binding for the last fifteen years, having been with Dodsworth Book Co. And Crew & Bro. Since April 1, 1882, E. Sparks has been associated with him in business. He was married in Freeport, November 25, 1877, to Nettie Huntoo, a native of Pennsylvania. He is a member of K. of P. ISAAC C. CARTER, superintendent of the patternmaking department of the Union Stove and Machine Works was born and reared in Buffalo, N. Y.; learned his profession as patternmaker in Fort Wayne, Ind., at the age of nineteen years. After a reputable connection of seventeen years in his profession in that State, he located in Red Wing, Minn., and followed his business there for several years. In 1879, he came here, and engaged in his present capacity, which has very reputably carried on since. In 1870, he married Miss Maria L. Miller, a native of Indiana. They have a family of two daughters, Cora L. and Emma L. At the breaking out of the war, Mr Carter enlisted his services of three months, he reenlisted in Company A, Thirtieth Indiana Volunteer Infantry, and was in active service for three years, when he was honorably discharged. He is an active officer and member of Leavenworth Post, No. 120, G. A. R., and has been an active member of the A., F. & A. M. Society for the last eighteen years. The folllowing came from Barber County Family Histories, retreived from the book "The Chosen Land", found at http://history.cc.ukans.edu/kansas/medicine/chosen Thomas Carter Thomas Carter was born in Lexington, Mississippi, in 1855. He and two children Robert and Lucy, came to Barber County about 1882. He worked for the Sugar Mill for awhile, and for Shaw and Dobbs feed lot. He had a love and talent for growing garden produce, which he passed on to his son, Harold, and started gardening. He bought a team from Shaw and Dobbs and started peddling produce in Medicine Lodge and towns as far as Alva, Oklahoma. Those trips took two days. He later bought a Dodge panel truck which made deliveries easier. He met Mary E. Bunch at Nashville, where she and her children, Ed, George, Evelyn (Johnson), Jesse, and Ursilla Bunch were living with her parents, Sarah and Fenton Wilfley. Elder David Nation married Mary and Thomas in 1894. Together they reared both families and 7 children of their own, namely Arthur C., Roy, Clarence T., Harold (Jack), Clara (Manning), Virgil, and Margaret (Baskin). The children were educatied in the Medicine Lodge Schools. Thomas bought his land in three plots, one at a time, from Dobbs and Shaw Feed Lot. There was lots of brush to be cleared away, so the family all worked on the truck farm. In the winter Thomas and Charley Talliaferro hunted with hounds along the river, so he did take time for recreation. The hides were sold to help a little with income. The Wilfleys moved to Medicine Lodge and bought the land where the sugar mill had been, and built the present Tom Carter House.Mary E. Carter died very suddenly in October, 1910, leaving 12 children, her parents, one brother, and 3 sisters. She was a devoted worker in the Second Baptist Church. In 1913 Thomas married Mary T. Coleman who was working at Fredonia, Ks. Mary T. was born in Dec., 1875, at Oswego, Ks., the daughter of Ossia and Rebeccah Coleman, and came to Medicine Lodge and helped make a home for Thomas' children. A grandchild, Amanda Evalee, daughter of Harold, whose mother died at childbirth was also raised in the home.Amanda completed school in the Medicine Lodge Schools, graduating in 1946. After the closing of the Second Baptist Church, the Carter family were welcome members of the First Baptist Church. They were some of the first of their race to settle in Medicine Lodge and were reverent participants in the worship service. They were hard-working and conscientiously honest people. Thomas passed on January 10, 1945. Mary T. continued living in the home until shortly before her death, January 1, 1964. These people contributed much to the Medicine Lodge Community. 2. Just found a neat trick to be able to share info over net without spending hours of typing. Need to have Family TreeMaker, Microsoft Word & AOL all 3 open. Choose person you want to send info on (in family treemaker) click on general report, click on edit, click on copy genealogy report. Then go to Microsoft word (have a blank page open), click paste, then do Ctrl A (to highlight all), click on edit, click on copy. Then go to AOL (have your message started) click on paste -- Presto your report for that person transfers to AOL. Works like a charm & saves you hours of typing. Any shortcut helps. Good luck & happy hunting. Mannesah

    1. [CARTER-L] Carter-Mayflower connection
    2. Mary K Ward
    3. Back in Dec 1996 from the Latter-Day-Saints Ancestral file I found some royalty back there in-the far regions of- my ancestry- Kings, Queens, Princes & princesses, kings concubines, knights, barons, etc. of various countries, France, Italy and England. Of course we all know that information is only as valid as the research of the people who sent it in. Anyway, I spotted the name "John Alden born 1599 of Southampton, England married Priscilla Mullins in Plymouth Mass. 12 May 1622. It turns out that 5 generations later their great great grandaughter, Rebecca Dowd became the 4th wife of Jabez Carter and the mother of my Mom's great grandfather, Luman Carter. I had previously noticed that there was a Robert (or Robart) Carter who was one of the 102 passengers on the Mayflower, a servant of the William and Mrs. Mullines family and their 2 children, Joseph and Priscila. But-alas, he died "without issue" so was not my ancestor. Records show that John Alden was hired for a cooper at South-Hampton, England "wher the ship victuled; and being a hopfull yong man, was much desired, but left to his owne liking to go or stay when he came here; he stayed, and maryed here." It also turns out that in 1620 Miles Standish and his wife Rose also sailed with the Pilgrims on the Mayflower. Miles had already attained the rank of Lieutenant in the British Army by 1603 and was employed by the "Separatists" (pilgrims) as their military captain of the Plymouth Colony , helping train their militia. He was a shrewd businessman and became a close friend of John Alden's. They both became assistants of the governor of the colony, and they founded the town of Duxbury, Mass. named for Standish's estate in England (pg 7691-w.b.encyclopedia). But Miles Standish is remembered chiefly for the part he played in the courtship of his friends, John and Priscilla Alden. Before anybody aboard the Mayflower went ashore on Nov. 21, 1620- the Pilgrim leaders persuaded most of them to sign the "Mayflower Compact," which would be the first plan for self determining government. Having undertaken a "Voyage to plant ye first Colonie in ye Northerne parts of Virginnia," they promised to set up "just and equal laws, " and to obey the laws decided upon by their leaders. John Alden, 21 years old, was the youngest signer of the Mayflower Compact. He and Priscila Mullines on 12 May 1622 were married in Plymouth, Mass. and theirs was one of the first weddings in America among the Mayflower passangers. They bought a 169 acre farm in what became Duxbury, Mass and they had 11 children. John and Priscilla Alden's daughter Elizabeth Alden, born 1624 in Plymouth, Mass, married William Pabodie; Of that union, their daughter Lydia Pabodie born April 1667 in Duxbury, Mass. married Daniel Grinell in 1683; Of that union their daughter Rebecca Grinnell married John Dowd Jr. in 1736; John Dowd, Jr. and Rebecca had a son Peleg Dowd born 10 February 1734 who married Mereb Ward on 2 July 1752. They had 13 or 15 children, among them Rebecca Dowd born 2 December 1767 in Killingworth, CT who became the 4th wife of Jabez Carter. Jabez and Rebecca Dowd Carter had at least 7 children, Luman, Jonah, Rebecca, Daniel, Clarissa, James and Charity. Some noted descendants of John and Priscilla Mullins Alden were John Quincy Adams (6th American president), his son Charles Francis Adams (a brilliant diplomat) and poets, William Cullen Bryant and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. William Cullen Bryant, known as "The Father of American Poets," also practiced law. His best known poems were "To a Waterfowl," "The Death of the Flowers," and translation of "Letters a Traveler." Longfellow's mother, Zilpah Wadsworth, the daughter of the famed Revolutionary General Peleg Wadsworth, loved music, nature and poetry. As descendants of John and Priscilla Alden, they were quite familiar with the family legend of Alden's courtship about which Longfellow wrote in his poem "The Courtship of Miles Standish" which included the memorable phrase "Why don't you speak for yourself, John." Longfellow traveled widely, taught at Harvard for 17 years and as "the Children's Poet" won fame for poems like, "Hiawatha," "Evangeline," "The Village Blacksmith," and "Paul Revere's Ride." (Vol 10 pp 4579-4580- W.B.Encyclop.) I did find Carter ancestors who lived in England. Edward ? Carter born about June 1639 in Oxford, England was the son of Edward Carter born [1613] and Elizabethae Blackburne born [1617].
