    1. [CARTER-L] Eleanor CARTER, Newark, NJ
    2. Jerry Smith
    3. Hi, I'm looking for any information on my GGG grandmother, Eleanor (Elenor?) CARTER of Newark, NJ. According to our (undocumented) family history, she married Peter SMITH, probably in late 1780's, and had a son, Nicholas SMITH, in 1790. Her husband Peter drowned in the Passaic River in 1792. She is said to have remarried a William Hunter in Newark. They may have moved to Cincinatti area in the early 1800's. She *may* have been decsended from a Nicholas CARTER who was in Newtown, Long Island, in the 1650's and then moved to Elizabethtown, NJ in the 1660's. So far I have not been able to find any marriage, birth, death, or other records of any kind for Eleanor or the others. Hoping someone on this list might be able to help. Thanks, Jerry Smith ----- Jerry Smith Northern Marianas College jerryfs@saipan.com

    3. Dear Bryan, Your problem finding ancestors of McKinney are parallel to my search for parents, grandparents of Joel Carter until last week when I found someone who knows all the answers. Even though Jackson Co is where the land now is, please look in the census and records of that Washington Co AND ALL COUNTIES TOUCHING IT. My Carters migrated to Washington Co., Illinois (it was a popular name) but I found all their info in surrounding cos. Have you considered contacting Washington Co., Illinois? 1. [CARTER-L] Joseph H, IOWA>MO
    2. I will repost this from time to time, in case someone new may be able to get past this roadblock. Thanks to census posts, I have found Joseph in Cass County, MO, after 1850. There are several Josephs in the Iowa 1820-1840 census, but I can't tell for sure which one it is. James William CARTER, b. 2 Aug. 1853, MO, was the son of JOSEPH HENRY CARTER, B. in IOWA, he md. Julia LUCKETT, b. MO. James was born in MO, so evidently Joseph and Julia moved to near Kansas City, MO, where land grants can be found for James and his brother Richard. My grandmother, Mary Eretta CARTER, b. 1884/1885 Kansas, d. when my father was about 7, May 31, 1926. She was confirmed and md. at Trinity Episcopal Church, Fort Worth, TX. These records still exist at the new Trinity Church, but I have been unable to get a copy of them. She md. Dr. Aaron Ross Hays, b. 1883 Crowley, TX, d. 1961?. Her father was a colorful gentleman cattle buyer. He came from "a family of 6 sons-3 fought for the north and 3 fought for the south." James William CARTER, b. Aug 2, 1853, MO, d.25 July 1924, TX. md. Jennie Franklin, b.ca 1854, Houston, TX, d.1929, buried Tarrant Co., TX. There is a rumor that one of the parents of James or Jennie was NATIVE AMERICAN. (Luckett/Carter/Franklin/????). Family stories have him an early manager of the King Ranch that was hired away by the Fort Worth Stockyards to manage there. My father states, "He came to visit on the train. He had a handlebar mustache and a stiff white collar. He brought my brother and I exciting presents like a horsehair lariat and real arrows..." I found him listed in some early TX land grants for Tarrant County. I also discovered that Kiowa Kansas opened its first cattle market and train depot about 1884/5, when Mary Eretta was born in Kansas. Can anyone make a connection?? I understand the "War" drove his generation apart. Any help would be appreciated. Elise C. Hays Markham

    3. Dear Cousins, I have learned some history while working in a genealogy library that may help you locate future documents. Try to picture a line starting at Staunton, Virginia cutting north through the left third of PA west covering Michigan down the Mississippi River separating in north MS, AL GA to meet at Stauntn, VA again. This was the Augusta County, VA with Staunton as the county seat. Check Staunton or Richmond. And, please study about the lost state of Franklin which lasted 1-1/2 yrs and included a square of east TN, west NC, west SC and west VA. Capital of that state was Greenville, Governor Mr. Sevier. Your records may be with this. Best wishes, Sharon Lewis Family wrote: > The following is an excerpt from a letter from Kathryn Carter of Tecumseh, > OK. 1. [CARTER-L] CARTER: Fitchburg, MA>Weathersfield, VT, c1700s-1800s
    2. Hi everyone! My Carter ancestor is Phebe D. CARTER. "The History and Genealogies of Ancient Windsor, Connecticut" by Henry Stiles lists her as -- Phebe D. Carter, of Fitchburg, Massachusetts, born in 1772. She married Joseph Stoughton, born in 1770 in Weathersfield, Vermont. I have looked through some pages of the "Carter" book via the FTM Genealogy Library and have seen several Carter names moving from the Fitchburg area of Massachusetts to Weathersfield, Vermont -- specifically I have noticed this trend in some of James4 Carter's children. I do not find my Phebe D. Carter (born c1772) in the book, however. Does anyone have her in their files? Any suggestions on other sources I may check for Carter genealogy (bearing in mind that I'm in the middle of the Great Plains)? I'm leaving for England on the 15th of this month and am hoping to find the origins of my Carter ancestors . . . . The names of Phebe's children are below-- Thanks for checking and best wishes! [2 Feb 1999 Tell Connie not to give up on John CARTER, d.1811, Greene Co., TN. People have searched for the NJ connection for 25 years that I know of. He was in Monongalia Co., VA 1770-78 with the others, and maybe in Hampshire, VA, 1765 with Caleb & Joseph. I think early Hampshire records are at the Virginia State Archives (not W. VA) and they now charge $30 just to open a letter, then further costs for searching and copies, if any. Hampshire Co., WV, P.O. Romney, has probate records back to 1780 but other records only from the 1830s. Hampshire was formed from Frederick Co., VA, 1753 and may hold clues to NJ. I did scan NJ Archives and some other NJ books (not ver many available at that time) for any record on names Caleb, John, Levi, Joseph CARTER - no success. There was a Caleb CARTER of Morris Co., NJ in Frederick Virkus's Compendium of American Genealogy, but he died in NJ. I am not yet UN-convinced that the Caleb CARTER (1787 "disappeared" from Greene, TN) was not a son of the Joseph Sr. who died 1811 there. This man MAY have come from Frederick co., VA.
