Waring) To: "Nancy Carter" <ncarter@vzinet.com> The Woodmen of the World is a fraternal organization, a lodge group. Comanche and many other small towns were once populated with such groups. Comanche had the Masons, the Woodmen, the Knights of Pythias, and the Odd Fellows. These were the gathering places of the village guy. Many men belonged to more than one bunch. The Woodmen was a lodge group but it was also a life insurance group. Members got life insurance with the deal and this also included a grave marker. Evidently there was some choice among these since I've seen large handsome markers, less impressive ones, etc. They are customarily styled as a tree stump with the limbs cut off. The Comanche lodge went away many years ago. Strictly aside, I recall going to their hall when I was an elementary school student to practice for a program we expected to present. It was up stairs in a gloomy building. They had a "prop room" where one could see all these robes, axes, other edged ceremonial weapons. There was a skull among the props. It was plain scary. At least this little kid thought it was. I have no idea what become of their local records. Their local building was extensively damaged by fire in the late 1940s and the 2nd story was removed. The "Woodman of the World" is a fraternal organization , similar to "Elks" or "Optomists". Today, it is better known as a life insurance company, but it's members sometimes do have lodge meetings with bingo games and such. Dear Carter "Cousins" The following information about John Barker Carter, I found referenced in the book "A Fatal Friendship: Alexander Hamilton & Aaron Burr" by Arnold A. Rogow. I was interested to learn that some biographers think the most important woman in Alexander Hamilton's life was his sister-in-law, Angelica Schuyler the wife of John Barker Carter. Hamilton & Angelica may have met in 1779 or 1780 when she was pregnant with her first child and Hamilton was preparing to marry her sister, Betsy Schuyler on 17 Dec 1780. Hamilton was known for his (discreet) "dalliances" with the ladies. His affair with his wife's sister may have begun before 1787 and continued for many years, whenever she traveled from London to visit her sister, Betsy & her brother-in-law, Alexander Hamilton. But--about Angelica's husband. John Barker Carter was born 1748 in Lowestoft, England and by 1776 he emigrated to America- presumably bancrupt -to escape debts run up from speculating & gambling. Some of Hamilton's biographers believe Carter left England because he killed someone in a duel; another legend is that he was fleeing an unhappy love affair. In America, within a year he eloped with & married on 23 June, 1777 -beautiful, gay, witty, Angelica Schuyler the oldest child of one of the oldest established, most respected & wealthiest families in New York State, Philip & Catherine Van Rensselaerwyck Schuyler. A man of few admirers, John Barker Carter's major interest was gambling but in America he made a fortune in a variety of ventures & investments. More than six years after his marriage he changed his last name (late in 1783) & was known as John Barker "Church" thereafter. Church returned to England (perhaps by 1787) a wealthy gentleman, won a seat in the House of Commons and established friendships with noteable people including the Prince of Wales, who became King George IV. This circle of friends all disregarded society's conventions, marital & otherwise which may be why John Barker (Carter) Church tolerated his wife's relationship with her sister's husband. Three years after Hamilton's death, John Adams in a letter to Benjamin Rush, condemned the profligacy of Hamilton's life, "his fornications, adultries, and his incests". Alexander Hamilton died July 12, 1804 having been shot in a duel with Aaron Burr. Angelica Church died in N.Y. 13 Mar 1814 and her sister, Betsy died in Washington at age 97 on 9 Nov 1854, more than 50 years after her husband. All three are buried in Trinity Church. Hi to all you Carter researchers out there. My name is Paul Carter and I have just recently started researching my family tree. I have had one very productive visit to the Library and with the help of the census returns for Lincolnshire I am now back to my GGG Grandfather, one Hearmon Carter, born @1801 in Lincolnshire. His children that I am aware of were: John Born @1830 Hagnaby, Lincs (My GG Grandfather) William Born @ 1831 Hagnaby, Lincs Mary Born @ 1832 Hagnaby, Lincs Susannah Born @1833 Hagnaby, Lincs Ann Born @ 1840 Hagnaby, Lincs All these children were born in a small hamlet called Hagnaby, near Spilsby in Licolnshire. I traced them back there from the 1871 census for South Killingholme, Lincolnshire which told me John's Birthplace and enabled me top go back to Hagnaby at 1841 and find them there. As you will all no doubt be aware, the 1841 census did not detail place of birth, only whether they were born within the county. So I tried the 1851 census for both Hagnaby and South Killingholme and the family were in neither place. John and his family then appear in South Killingholme in the 1861 census. So, I guess my main question is, does anyone have any information whatsoever on my Hearmon Carter or any of his siblings or his Children including where they may have moved to by the 1851 census. I realise from the postings that I have recieved since joining the list that most of it's members appear to be in the US, but you never know I guess unless you ask. For all I know, one or more of my GG or GGG relatives may have emigrated? Any help appreciated. Best wishes. Paul Carter

Hi, I am working on my mother-in-law's genealogy, and it's a bit complicated. She was adopted by her aunt on her father's side at the age of 18 months. Because of this she lost contact with her mother's family. Her mother was Lois Barbara COMBS b.1921 in Yakima, WA. Lois Has A sister named Velma who is 9 years younger (ca.1930). Their parents are Clark R. COMBS and Leone CARTER. My mother-in-law remembers sending letters to her ggrandparents who she knew as "Daddy Guy and Grandma Dove". We believe these were Leone's parents, and they were born ca. 1880. The only places I can connect Leone to is Yakima (where Lois COMBS was born), and Pomona, CA (where she owned a store for several years.)
