Have hit a brick wall on Richard CARTER who married Sarah LOGSDON, 9 Sept 1802, Allegany County, Maryland. Children of this union, John b. ca. 1805; William b. ca. 1810, Mary b. 1820, Dominic b. 1823 and Sarah b. 1826. These children known. Probably others. All, children born Allegany County. Have been unable to find trace of Sarah Logsdon CARTER and last three children after Richards death. John and William known to have moved to Danville, Knox Co., Ohio in 1830s. Need to know Richards parents, and what happened to Sarah and children. There is a "Old Mr. CARTER" buried 10 Dec, 1829, St. Ignatius (now St. Patrick's) Catholic Cemetery in Mt. Savage. Could he be Richard's father?

Dear Ann, I have two James Carroll Carter's in my line! One fits with yours except for the birth date!!!!! Her is the info I have: James Carroll Carter b. abt. 1831 in probably Jackson Co., TN. He married Melinda J. Hasten on 31 Dec 1860 in Union Co., IL. He is in the 1850 census in Jackson Co., TN with old Ruth Carter. He is in the 1860 census in Union Co., IL with relatives, Priscilla Carter, Alsie Carter, little Ruth Carter and old Ruth Carter. He is in the 1870 census of Williamson Co., IL, just he and Melinda. He is in the 1880 census of Williamson Co., IL with Melinda and two children: Nellie, 8, dau, and Bertie, 6, son. This sounds like the same family to me!!!! I have been searching for more info on him as I believe he is the brother to my John Campbell Carter who was born abt. 1829 also in Jackson Co., TN. John died in 1862 in the union army. His widow, Serena lived on in Williamson Co., IL until her death in 1932! James Carter signed as affidavit in Serena Jackson Carter's widow's pension file stating that he knew both John and Serena before they married and was present at their marriage in Monroe Co., KY. If you check the census records of Williamson Co., IL you will find that James is always living very near Serena Jackson Carter!!!! Serena Jackson and John Campbell Carter named their first son James Carroll Carter!!!!! I'm so excited about your post that I am beside myself writing this message to you!!! This is the very first time that any post has connected with me on this list!!!! Please write me right away with your thoughts!!! Anxious to hear from you! Hi Carolyn, Looking through my files, I have "nothing specific" (i.e., published or documentary info) other than the research of some others who have passed on to me information about this family. I am currently getting documents from Halifax Co., VA for my Cook line (which intermarried with Carter) and will pursue Carter documents in the future. (TIME & $$ ... the bane of genealogy!) I'll be happy to share off-list what I have with you. RSVP. Be well & God bless, Kate Beaugrand Cook Minnesota Kate!! Can you tell me why you have placed Thornton within this particular family group? This is one "brick wall" I would really like to nail down, but I'm a little bit insecure these days about "evidence" since many people have tried to convince me that the "other" Thornton is mine. I would be enormously grateful for any specific information you can provide on this. And thanks...!! Carolyn

%%%%%%%% WELCOME %%%%%%%% WELCOME to the CARTER Family Discussion List. This is a discussion area for anyone who has an interest in Genealogy or History related to the Family CARTER, including CARTIER, CATTER or any other related spelling. My name is Charles E. ("Chuck") Carter, and I'm the owner of this list. I'm responsible for keeping it running as smoothly as possible and setting some rules and guidelines. %%%%%%%% GENERAL %%%%%%%% * Please keep this message. I recommend that you keep a copy on file in your computer as well as a printed paper copy that you can easily find. * You may see some new terms and phrases here along with exacting instructions about sending commands, etc. You will get used to it soon enough - don't let it bother you. In order to make things work well, you must follow the instructions - to the letter. If you leave something out of a command or put something extra in, it won't work. This is because of the way computer programs work. * Remember these addresses: * If you need help, contact ME. My address is: [email protected] * To post a message to this list, i.e. Genealogical data, queries, etc (stuff you want other members to read) send it to: [email protected] * To subscribe or unsubscribe, send a message to: [email protected] ( for the MAIL mode ) or [email protected] ( for DIGEST mode ) %%%%%%%% RULES %%%%%%%% * This list is for the discussion of Genealogy and History, primarily regarding CARTER and related families. Discussion of migration patterns, immigration, heraldry, historical sketches, CARTER settlements, census data, wills, family Bibles, vital records, web sites, etc., as relates to the CARTER family is encouraged as well as discussion of collateral families. Public announcements of information of interest to Genealogists in general, thought it may not be CARTER specific is permitted, but please use discretion. * Do not post virus warnings, test messages, chain letters, political announcements, current events, items for sale, personal messages, etc. For information on virus hoaxes and urban legends, see: http://www.kumite.com/myths/ among others. * Please do not send attachments (messages with files appended) to the list. If you have a file you would like to share with members, announce what you have to offer, then send the file only to those who request it, via private email. There are many CARTER branches, and not everyone will want the data on your file. * No rude comments or flaming in this list! No discussion of flaming in the list. For definitions of flaming and related information, see: http://www.man.ac.uk/~zisiira/Netiquette/flame.html and http://www.pass.wayne.edu/~twk/flaming.html * Do not impose any other rules or conditions, expressed or implied elsewhere, upon this list. Rules for other forums may not necessarily apply here. Do not try to regulate this list. If you do not like the way someone formats their queries or responses, or the content of their subject titles, take it up with the list owner (ME), NOT in the list. The list is for Genealogy and History. %%%%%%%% GUIDELINES %%%%%%%% * Small GEDCOM files are discouraged but not banned from the list (send in a message, NOT as a file attachment) as long as the resulting message is no larger than 61,440 bytes maximum. * Try to keep quoting to a minimum. "Quoting" is repeating text of the message you are replying to. Some quoting is necessary to remind other readers what the thread is about, but do try to use good judgement. Quoting the previous writer's signature block or surname list is totally unnecessary. * Surname lists are okay, but please try to limit them to say, half a dozen names. Any more than that and many people just won't read them. Try keeping several small lists and rotate them with each succeeding message. %%%%%%%% SUBSCRIPTIONS %%%%%%%% * Subscription commands to : [email protected] - or - [email protected] I repeat, to subscribe or to unsubscribe send an email to: [email protected] - or - [email protected] and put subscribe (and nothing else) or unsubscribe (and nothing else) in the body of the message. Please remember, commands go to: [email protected] - or - [email protected] and not to the list! You can use CAPS or lowercase, it doesn't matter. %%%%%%%% POSTING MESSAGES %%%%%%%% * To post a message (query, reply or other CARTER data) to the list, send it to: [email protected] It also helps to remember to put something in the "subject line". %%%%%%%% TIPS %%%%%%%% * Accuracy is important and sources are vital. Ancestor lists are worthless if the information is wrong. * All information need not be accompanied by source citations, but I do recommend strongly that posts either include sources or a note stating that they are available on request. * If information is speculation, then label it as such until it is proven or commonly accepted as fact. * When posting your query, try to give as much information as you know, i.e. dates and places of all vital events, if known, along with enough other readers can positively identify if they are researching the same family. "Anyone out there researching CARTER's?" just doesn't cut it! * When replying to the list (this can also apply to "private" replies), try to quote some portions of the previous message so that other readers are reminded what the "thread" is about. Make it clear what is quoted material and what you are adding. Most mail readers take care of this for you be inserting greater-than signs ">" at the beginning of each quoted line or possibly double brackets "<<" before and ">>" after the quoted piece. Use standard Windows procedures to "cut" unnecessary material. * Post your query frequently, perhaps once a month, if you have not yet found your ancestor. New people are joining the list all the time and they may have the information you need. * Please send CARTER replies to the list, not just to the original poster. Other members may benefit from the data you provide. %%%%%%%% FURTHER INFORMATION %%%%%%%% See the following URL's for information on Genealogy lists: http://users.aol.com/johnf/14246/gen_mail.htm http://www.rootsweb.com/~maillist %%%%%%%% ABOUT ROOTSWEB %%%%%%%% RootsWeb was founded in 1996 by Dr. Brian Leverich and Karen Isaacson. Kate!! I have been trying for more years than I can remember to track down the parents of Thornton Carter, 1778, VA>NC>TN, with very few credible leads. There is another Thornton Carter, born around 1790, who follows a similar migratory path, but he isn't mine. When I read your recent roll call, I almost fell out of my chair! Can you tell me why you have placed Thornton within this particular family group? This is one "brick wall" I would really like to nail down, but I'm a little bit insecure these days about "evidence" since many people have tried to convince me that the "other" Thornton is mine.
