1. [CARTER-L] CARTER in Uxbridge?
2. Angela Incigneri
3. Hi I am searching for information regarding my CARTER connections. I have a George and Sarah CARTER who were in Uxbridge in 1812. They had a daughter Mary who married William GOWLETT and another daughter Ann who married Henry GROVE. Eventually Mary's grand-daughter Matilda WELLS married Ann's son William GROVE. So far I have not managed to get any additional information on George and Sarah. Does anyone recognise this family? Best Wishes Angela Melbourne, Australia

1. [CARTER-L] James W. Hagy's thesis on Castle Woods, VA, & copyright
2. Dear Robert (and list), I am concerned about the manner in which you have ascertained that there is no copyright on Mr. Hagy's work. Did you inquire with the author? Check with the university where the thesis was written? Check out UMI (University Microfilms International)? Check with the library that published his work before you to find out how they acquired permission to copy the book? Just in case you do not know, there does not have to be a copyright notice inside a thesis in order for it to be copyrighted. I own two thesis copyrights for my own work; my dissertation (Ph.D.) and thesis (M.A.) are copyrighted. I, like most other academics, have given permission to University Microfilms International (a Bell & Howell Company) to reproduce my dissertation. Most theses are not included in UMI's inventory, but some are (mine is not). If Mr. (Dr.?) Hagy's work is included in the UMI inventory, unbound copies of materials held by UMI can be purchased by contacting http://wwwlib.umi.com/dxweb/search. I believe the cost for unbound copies shipped express is $31.00. Bound copies can be purchased through that site as well, but you cannot use the express delivery and I do not know how much a bound copy would cost. If Mr. Hagy's work is included in UMI's inventory, getting copies without violating his copyright would be simple. If his work is not held in the UMI collection, then you need to contact the author for permission to copy his material. There is a James W. Hagy who has several volumes of materials available through http://www.genealogybookshop.com. It would seem likely that this is the same author as the one who wrote the thesis you intend to copy since the works are of a like kind to the one you described. You might be able to learn how to contact him through the genealogy bookshop. You might also be able to contact him through his alma mater, East Tennessee State University. It seems that he might have been included as an author in one of South Carolina Educational Television (SCETV) Commission's programs (see http://www.scetv.org) called The Writers' Circle of South Carolina, Season IV. You could also contact them to see if you could find out how to reach the Joseph W. Hagy they featured in their program. Their e-mail address is: [email protected] I found this listing on a 1993 seminar held at Temple University: James W. Hagy, Department of History, University of Charleston, Charleston, SC 29424 (USA), If this is your James W. Hagy, you could try to reach him through the history department at the University of Charleston. In any event, I simply want to point out to you that unless you have ascertained from an authoritative source such as from the author himself or the publishers of his work (e.g., East Tennessee University, the Russell County Historical Society, etc.) that the book you are offering to copy for people has definitely entered the public domain, you need to do more than simply look inside the first few pages of a thesis to see if the person has typed in a copyright statement into the text. Under U.S. law, the fact that an author wrote the material guarantees him/her the copyright to the material unless he signs it over to someone else such as a publisher. This is true whether he or she wrote on the material that it is copyrighted. If you copy Mr. Hagy's work and it has not become part of the public domain, you are breaking the law. More important, you are depriving Mr. Hagy of the right to make an income on his work. I hope you will make absolutely certain that you have the right to copy the entirety of his work before you begin to reproduce this work for others. Dr. Karen Carter Sandy, UT

1. [CARTER-L] Castle's Woods: Frontier Virginia Settlement, 1769-1799
2. Several months ago I offered to copy for interested researchers James W. Hagy's thesis on the frontier settlement of Castle's Woods, Virginia. I had searched for many long years before finding an actual copy of this work at a rare book dealer in North Carolina. This thesis was presented to the Faculty of the Department of History, East Tennessee State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts, 1966. The original thesis contained no copyright provision as did the 1979 Russell County Historical Society printing which contained landowner maps and local Russell county info. that did not appear in the 1966 version. This one unfortunately can not be copied. I thought I was done with this project but recently have received a number of additional requests for this material so I have decided to make ONE more printing and then retire from the copying business. For all of those folks who for one reason or another failed to secure a copy of this work, this is the last chance. "This thesis is a narrative account of the frontier settlement of Castle's Woods. The community is an interesting case study of the ideas of Frederick Jackson Turner regarding the frontier. Castle's Woods in many ways fits the pattern of the typical frontier community. Apparently first settled by a long hunter, Castle's Woods, like a magnet, drew westward the classic frontier types, hunters, farmers, speculators, surveyors, artisans, and preachers. Even some aristocrates settled there. The usual frontier customs and activities were observed in the community. These included a considerable amount of lawlessness. The greatest problem for the settlers in Castle's Woods was the Indians who were a menace from the time of the first settlement until nearly the end of the eighteenth century. After the Indian problem had been eliminated, the frontier stage quickly passed away...... A large amount of primary materials were used in this study. The most important sources were county records, state archives, national archives, and the Draper Manuscripts." The importance of Castle's Woods is twofold. First, it had its day of importa nce as a stepping stone to the West. Secondly, it is important as a case study of the American frontier. It was the first permanent settlement in Russell County, Virginia, founded in 1769 and located on the Clinch River. Many of the early southwest Virginia families are discussed in detail including Russell, Walker, Cowan, Porter, Moore, Campbell, Stuart, Houston, Montgomery, Snoddy, Thompson, Robinson and many, many more. Detailed accounts of many of the Indian battles are described in great detail and this research material makes interesting reading. If anyone would like information on how to acquire a copy of this 140 page thesis please contact me privately at [email protected] Regards, Robert Cowan 525 Harrogate Rd. Matthews, North Carolina 28105

1. [CARTER-L] Carters of Pike Co KY
2. Steve Williamson
3. Hello! I'm researching the Carters of Pike Co, KY - in particular, a woman named Julia Ann 'Annie' Carter, b abt 1820, d after 1850. She had moved to Pike by 1840, when she is living in the household of Moses Hunt: the 1840 Pike census lists 2 males <5, 1 male 20-30, and 2 FEMALES 20-30 in the household of Moses Hunt. I believe the second woman must have been Annie. William Bishop (father of Julia's daughter Mary) lived nearby (pg 284 of that census). Moses Hunt was married to Wm Bishop's niece, Mary 'Polly' Bishop. In 1830, Moses was still living in his father John's household in Pike County: Julia was not in John's household at that time (only female in household is age 50-60) & there are no Carters listed in Pike Co in 1830 (but in Floyd there are Joseph & Ira, neither of whom were old enough to have been her father). The 1850 Pike census shows July A. Carter, age 29, & Mary E. Carter, age 4, living in household of Moses Hunt: #114, pg. 441b; William Bishop is in #81, pg. 439; both Carters are listed as born in Kentucky. In the same household is also a John Goode, age 9, born KY; the only other Goode in the 1850 Pike census is an Andrew M. Goode, age 13, b VA, just a few doors down in #119, the home of Henry Hunt, age 28, b KY (w/wife Sarah, 30, VA) - after Andrew, there is a Malinda Stanton, age 32, b VA. The Goodes: John Goode, b abt 1841, & Andrew Marshall Goode, b. June 01, 1835 in Franklin County, Virginia, d. September 26, 1918 in Clarissa, Todd County, Minnesota, were both sons of Jacob Fleming Goode and Alice Mullins (daughter of William Booker Mullins & Judith Stanley). Andrew married Sarah Childress January 05, 1856 in Pike County, Kentucky. Jacob & Alice Goode were residents of Franklin County, Virginia (1850 Census, Franklin Co, VA: pg 158b, #1501 Jacob Goode, age 57, Aley, 54 & children; #1500 is Joseph Mullins, age 40 & family; #1502 is Luke Standly, age 75 & family; Booker & Judith Mullins are #1496). There were also Bishops, Hunts, and Booths (surnames connected with Julia & her dtr) resident in Franklin. It is possible that Annie Carter was related to the Carters of Franklin County. Another possibility is that she was the daughter of 1 of these Russell Co VA Carters: Solomon, David, or James. In 1830, a Joseph Carter, b 1800-1810 is in Floyd Co KY, living next door to Shadrack Estep, who was married to Elizabeth Hunt, the sister of Moses Hunt (in whose household Annie lived) - this suggests that Joseph & Julia were connected. In 1840, a Frederick Carter, b 1800-1810 appears in Pike Co KY but is absent from the 1850 Census. I have been unable to learn anything about him. In 1850, a group of Carters appear in Pike Co KY, who may have migrated from North Carolina; there is a Henry Hunt, b abt 1795 in NC, with wife Patience. Their children appear to be Quinton, Eleanor, Rachel, & Mary. These Carters appear to be connected to the Esteps, Smiths, Hunts, & Maynards. I am beginning to think I am the only person researching this set of apparently interconnected Carters who came to eastern Kentucky in the 19th century. Any names ring a bell? Thanks!
