ERSKINE CALDWELL won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1960, just defeating fellow Southerner WILLIAM FAULKNER. He is one of the titans of Southern literature, though he is losing readers in the last few years as Southern public schools shift to more pro-South writers, like Senator Asa Carter. http://www.geocities.com/guerrabr/forallt100.html CARTER, ASA EARL (1925-1979). Dear J. Fox, I just got a posting from [email protected] through the Carter list with the subject heading "Book with Carter entries you posted." (This heading comes from a message you sent to me a little while ago in response to a message I sent to you.) This new message had no content, but it did have a download file. The line in front of an e-mail address I have encountered before. It means that a virus has invaded your machine and stolen addresses of people you have written to so that it could infect their machines if they download the file. My McAfee software has caught the virus in the past and I've avoided infection. Just in case your virus protection software missed it in your case, I wanted to be certain that you knew you needed to disinfect your computer. Karen Carter Sandy, UT

I haven't been able to find out who his parents were. W J moved to Alabama in the early 1860's where he joind the 27th ALabama Infantry CSA at New Market in Madison Co. He lost his right leg at the battle of Peach Tree Creek. WJ setled in Marshall Co Alabama where he died in 1910. He was Married at least three times. His wives include Mary P Elizabeth Roden and Victoria Long. I have been told WJ came to Alabama from Missouri But I have checked both the 1850 and 1860 Missouri Census and could find no trace of him. Hi Diane, In 1838 Joel A (20 yrs) and brother, Richard P Carter Jr (17 yrs) migrated from Middle TN to East Forks area, Clinton Co, IL. Their parents and grandparents were already settled there and Uncles helped them get started. One census reported 8 grown men in one household! Well, my ancestor, Joel, soon mar Mary E Cole (also from Middle TN), and took care of youngest brother, Richard P. Then, Richard mar Miss Nancy Phillips about 1841 and they had a girl and a boy. In 1848 at 28 yrs Richard P died of some kind of fever and Nancy followed within the week. The father of Nancy (who was old) supported and raised the two small children. I have a contact name of a descendant of this son. Phillips lived close to Carters to help raise these two orphans in the Washington Co, IL area. Our family will always include the Philips or Phillips descendants! Please write more.
