    2. John Moore
    3. He's probably from the Giles Carter line, Halifax, Virginia. About six distinct Carter families came from Virginia. In the late 1700's and early 1800's several of John Carter's sons migrated to Tennessee. (John was Giles' third great grandson) From there, at least two (James and Richard) moved to Alabama. James is my 3rd great grandfather. -----Original Message----- From: jim carter [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Thursday, February 21, 2002 5:34 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [CARTER-L] Wiley Carter Posting my brick wall again for those new or others who may have been missed. 1. [CARTER-L] John Carter, Born VA 1768-69
    2. Denise Ashleman
    3. I am looking for any information on John Carter born 1768-69 in Virginia. He married a Mary Lohr December 25, 1797 in Shennandoah County, VA, however, his first born daughter was named Rebecca Burke Carter and was born January 1797, 11 months prior to his marriage to Mary Lohr. Rebecca was the only one of the 9 children to have the name of Burke and the only one to use the middle name of Burke in her children's name, William Burke Allison. Generations have attempted to find John Carter who married Mary Lohr, however, I would like to know if anyone knows of a John Carter that married a Burke, possibly Rebecca, prior to 1797. I am feel that we should look into the possibility that John Carter married more than one time, and that he married a woman named Burke in Virginia prior to Mary Lohr. If this wife died in childbirth or shortly thereafter, he would have an infant and would have married as soon as practical as did many other Carter men left in the same circumstance. ! John is reported to have shown up on a Carter family tree of the Carters of the Rappahanock River branch (Corotoman, Cleve, Sabine Hall, etc.,etc.,) The James River branch was Shirley Plantation and Robert E. Lee's mother. If this is indeed the case, Mary Lohr may not even show up on a family tree due to the fact that they left Virginia. Any ideas or leads will be greatly appreciated. e-mail [email protected] Denise `

    2. I'm not sure if there is a connection, but I am researching Carter surname and have ran in to brick walls for the past 10 years. I am interested in your information, because I have a Horne connection also, but have not been able to make the connection. I have some family letter that called John E. Horne and family Uncle and cousins. I don't know who John's wife is because I have not found a marriage record and I can't make out the census record I have. John Horne was in Panola Co., Mississippi in 1850 and he was killed during the civil war. He was born around 1807 NC. I am research Samuel Albert Carter b. 1810 NC. He was in Giles Co., TN in 1840, Madison Co., AL in 1850, and in the Holmes & Attala Co., MS areas between 1860-1870. I lost track of him after that. I don't know what his wife's maiden name was. My website: www.expage.com/familyresearch Have you ran into any of these names during your research? 3. `Subject: Carter, John 1769 I am looking for any information regarding the Carter family members that traveled/moved from down on the Rappahannock River,( Corotoman, Sabine Hall, Cleve, etc. James River Branch, Shirley), to the part of Virginia that would later become West Virginia, possibly Greenbriar. I am looking for information on the family of John N. Carter, Born June 9, 1769 in Virginia. He appears on a family tree done in the early to mid 1800's, not the one by Robert Randolph Carter that goes into the 1900's. Robert "King" Carter and his daughters prepared one that was split between the female and male Carters, it probably was done after this one. This has been a brick wall for a LARGE GROUP of us Carter descendants, any help would be GREATLY APPRECIATED!! e-mail: [email protected] `

    3. I'm wondering if anyone has a Margaret CARTER in their database who was born about 1820 in VA (according to all censuses found to date), who married William HOWELL in Allen Co OH Sept 1840, had child Stephen A. Howell 1841 in OH, and all other children b IA: Nancy, Mary, George Washington, William Milton, John Wesley, Commodore Perry, Elizabeth, Calista, Oliver and Ira (twins), Catherine. However, we can't find this family in IA prior to 1854 when we find them on a tax list in Jasper Co IA, living next to William Howell's brother George and his family. Both Howell families remained in Jasper Co IA until 1863 when they went overland to OR, settling in Benton Co, near where oldest brother Stephen Howell had already settled. Of the above children, Stephen, Mary, George, William, Elizabeth, and Calista are known Howell proper names. The others may be, but may also be CARTER names. The "A" in Stephen A Howell is said to be Allen/Allan, but we have only hearsay as documentation. We do have information about Margaret and her family after her marriage and through to her death in Oregon, including photographs of some of her children, and would be happy to exchange. We can also provide information on most of her grandchildren as well. If you have no information about this specific CARTER woman, we'd be interested in any CARTER families resident in Northern OH 1820+. Nancie Howell Willey
