Both died in Mount Vernon, Knox, Ohio in 1886 and 1888. Don't > know what happened to these children, Mary, Dominic and Sarah. May have been > other children but they are unknown to me. I have an ancestor, James Madison Helm, who married an Agnes CARTER in 1836 in Knox Co OH. The marriage was performed by a Universalist minister (Truman Strong) and the Helm family is known to have been associated with the Baptist, Methodist, & Presbyterian churches at various times over the 19th century. Agnes consistently is listed as born in Virginia in every census from 1850-1880 (d. Oct 1890) and is thought to have been born about 1815. Her tombstone is missing from the family cemetary and so far other confirmation has eluded us. In one directory (Champaign Co IL, where the family finally settled), Agnes Carter Helm lists her birthplace as Loudoun Co, VA. In the 1900 census her eldest daughter lists her mother's birthplace as Maryland. The law in Ohio in the 1830's, as far as I know, was that women had to marry in their county of residence. I don't think Madison Helm was a Knox Co resident, or at least not one for very long, as the Helm family lived in Guernsey Co OH at this time, and I haven't found him listed in the Knox Co tax rolls (I am no judge of their completeness, altho Guernsey Co records are less complete). Agnes Carter Helm's origins and family are almost a complete mystery. I am very interested in knowing more about your Carters. Catholic, Maryland birth unlikely -- but possible. Champaign Co IL census records are full of problems but I'm inclined to take consistencies where I get them, and treat that 1900 entry as either some kind of mistake or else a hint about something that I can't figure out yet. The names Sarah, Mary and William do (or may) appear in Agnes's children but all are common names and William is traditional in the Helm family. I know of some other Carters in Knox Co that don't seem to be related to Agnes that may or may not have some connection to you. Maybe we can at least work on eliminating false leads by exchanging more info -- if there is any. I do have some more Knox Co Carter info. but I will have to dig it out, haven't worked on this for about a year.

    3. One of the problems is that there are SO many Carters in VA and KY!!! If you look at James, Henry, Joseph, William and Richard (all found in my Carter names): 1820 KY Some, but not all Joseph: Shelby Co p 156, Garrard Co p. 83A, BRK (Breckenridge?)Co. p 245, Bath Co Joseph p 180, Joseph Jr. p 190 James: Barran Co p 6, p.7, Madison Co p 166 Henry: Owen Co P 101, Henry, Esq, p.105, Barran Co p5 William: Madison Co p.118, Barran Co p5, Garrard p 85A Richard: Shelby Co p 127A, BRK p. 245 It would seem the Barran County group would be most likely candidates since there are Lucketts found in that area. Those looking in Tennessee (Kit are you there??) should not that Barran County is near the Tennessee border in South KY. Barran Co Carters include in 1820: George, Henry, 2 James, Phillip, william, and Landon. 3. I don't know, but I have some clues that indicate a possibility that Solomon could have been the father of James. There was a Solomon Carter in Montgomery Co. KY as early as 1800 (tax list index.) I do have some information about the Williams. According to a gedcom I found, they were father and son, both named William Aylett. The father was born in Spotsylvania VA. His father was also William, who was the son of Rev. War Captain John Carter and Sarah Kenyon. There is neither a James nor a Joseph listed in the gedcom. Apparently, there are probate records in Montgomery County for William Aylett Carter, but not for any of the other Carters who were there in the early 1800's. Nancy --- "Kitty B. 3. Thanks for your prompt reply! I wish I did have the names. I got the number of children from the 1820 census. If we are talking about the same family, then your Joseph, born in 1808, might be a brother of my James...except that my James was born in KY. Other Carters who were in Montgomery County KY in 1820 were John, Solomon, William and William A. (William Aylett?) James Carter and the Reffetts migrated from KY to Indiana about 1830, probably Vermillion County, and then on to Jasper County Illinois by about 1850. My great grandfather, John Carter, moved to Newton County MO about 1880, but James stayed in IL. (James was probably deceased by 1880 anyway.) 3. The 1810 Montgomery Co. KY census lists Joseph Carter, age 45+, with 6 sons and 3 daughters. He is not in the 1820 census, but part of Montgomery County became Bath Co. in 1811. The 1820 Bath County census shows a Joseph Carter and Joseph Jr. A fellow researcher found Montgomery Co, KY land records from about 1828. There are two transactions involving Joseph Reffitt. One is witnessed by James Carter and the other is witnessed by Joseph Carter. My g.g. grandfather, James Carter, born about 1800 in KY, was closely associated with Joseph Reffitt for a long time. James married Margurite Reffitt (Reffett) who was probably Joseph Reffitt's niece. Question: Who was Joseph Carter and was he related to James? She married my grandfather, Wiley Petit Bullard (born in TX in 1852) there in January 1872. Their first child, Mary Ola, was also born in Greenwood in 1873. She had at least one brother, Tom Carter, who at the time of her death lived in Rosebud, TX. At the time of her death in 1914, she resided in Mineral Wells, TX. I am seeking any and all information about her including her parents. All I know is her mother's maiden name was Sarah Lewis and she was supposed to have been 1/4 Cherokee. Her father's name may have been John Carter, both parents may have been from TN Would appreciate any help anyone can give. I have a slew of information on the Bullards if anyone is interested in that line. Thanks so much, Sarita Bullard Oertling

    1. [CARTER-L] CARTER INTERESTS
    2. ADRIAN CARTER
    3. I am interested in the Carter family originally from Yarmouth. I have a James Carter in my line born in 1831 in Yarmouth who was a merchant seaman. He was father to my ggrandfather William Henry Carter who was born in Yarmouth in 1865. He was a fisherman who moved north to Grimsby in around 1900. I would be interested to hear if these details ring a bell with anyone. Thanks, Adrian Carter. -- http://www.virgin.net/

    3. There are about eight Theodorick's and I have around 10 Elizabeth's (three are around the time you mention). My best guess is Theodorick, III, whose second wife was Unknown Townes is the one you are looking for. He was originally from Halifax, Virginia. He had four children by Judith Cunningham, and eight children through Townes. (Source: Giles Carter of Virginia). If you have any fills on these, I would appreciate a copy. 1. [CARTER-L] Carter of MASS.
    2. Pattie Carter
    3. Odd story to tell. My grandfather William Joseph Carter, Sr. was born 18 Jan 1901 in Somerville, Middlesex Co., Mass. Or so he believed thats where he was born. When he was 4 to 5 years old, his mother died, he did not remember her name, but believes it could of been Mary. His father, bonded out, or gave guardianship of the children to local or area farmers. The children were raised by other Families, and worked on their farms for their room and board. My grandfather believed that he came from a family of 9 to 11 children, some of the names of his siblings could of been, Henry, John, George, Mary and those are all he could remember. He thinks there was twin siblings also. He left Massachusetts before 1920 and headed to a southern state with an older brother. The older brother went back to Massachusetts and my grandfather hoped a coffin truck heading to California. Upon arriving in Phoenix, Arizona. The coffin truck hit a bump causing my grandfather to fall out and break his leg. He was laid up in Phoenix, and thats how he met my grandmother, Dorothea Louise Lindner. He ended up marrying her and living out the rest of his life in Arizona. He thought his fathers name was Ovide or Orville and he thinks his parents were of French Canadian Descent. Looking for anyone who would know this story and the family which my grandfather belongs too. He died in 1986 and we began searching before 1979 for his long lost family. Census records has been checked for 1900, before he was born and we cannot place him within any of the families that was there. We checked the 1910 census in hopes of finding which farm he lived at. But there is about 40 or more blank/ water washed pages of that census. Therefore we did not find him listed in the 1910 census either. 1920 census would place him in another state, which we do not know what state or if he was even put on the census. Our only hope of finding his family, is that someone will recognize the family story as having lived it or heard the story told themselves. Long shot, but sometimes they work...
