Would anyone be able to tell me how many John CARTER listings there were in the counties of Nelson, Shelby, Spencer, & Oldham counties in Ky., on the 1830, and 1840 census'? Thanks very much. Dick Carter [email protected]
On the 1830 Ky census for Spencer Co Ky, there is a listing for John CARTER, MALES 2 under 5..1 5-10.. 1 15-20..1 51-60... FEMALES 1 15-20..2 20-30... 1 40-50...Also shown in household are SLAVES, 2 female under 10, and 1 female 24-36... Also, perhaps 2 males under 10.. Next door is a David GLASS, and next to Glass is a Nancy NUTTERFIELD, 2 under 5..1 5-10.. 2 15-20...1-20-30.. 1 30-40.. With Oldham County being formed in 1823, and Spencer in 1824, What county might these 2 listings have been in in 1820??? Nancy NUTTERFIELD appears in Owen Co., In in 1840 census, next door to a John CARTER... Is this the same John CARTER?? Or, is one of the teen age boys the John CARTER who appears in Owen Co??? Family legend says that John CARTER Jr., left home young due to his feelings about slavery.. (ANTI)... One of her daughters, Eliza married a John CARTER Jr.,where not known, and another, Matilda, married a James Baldon, in Owen County In in 1834... Any help would be greatly appreciated... http://www.townhall.com/columnists/thomassowell/ts20020314.shtml I believe if you click on the above URL you will find an interesting history lesson on NAMES. Because you might find the information somewhat political and therefore not acceptable for reproduction on these web sites I leave it up to you whether you might want to view it. Hello Fellow Researchers, I am looking for James Arthur Carter mother Peggy (Isaac could be the father ) . And from Fauquier County, VA and a Bushed. I am sorry I dont have any dates.
To, "Giants" There are a lot of James, a few Arthurs and Isaacs in my files. James seems to be a favorite of the Carter family. My Carters were Quakers from Bucks Co. Pa. who moved to Frederick Co. Va. early to mid 1700's. Am sure they spread out from there. Arthur probably was a family name somewhere but I haven't found where/who yet. My family seemed to take a mother's maiden name for child's given or middle name. Examples in my line were, Arthur, Kerfoot, Watson, Pierce, etc. This must be a practice of the Carters for recently I saw a fellow researcher looking for a Bentley Carter (no relation), but it caught my attention. Sorry, I don't have your James Arthur Carter in my line but it sounds like there must be a connection. FYI all you diggers who can't find maps. Easiest way, keyword USGS, very first entry on that page will give you the link to U.S. Geological Survey, plus other interesting places and things. Have a ball, John C.
I am NOT a Carter researcher...but found the following info while researching some of my other lines...thought it might help re some of the Carter queries I've noticed! Oxfordshire, England to Chester Co, PA; to Rockingham Co, VA; to Chatham and Randolph Co, NC, then to Buncombe Co, NC, finally to Rabun Co, GA: My line: Edward Carter (c1640-c1703) and wife Margaret ---; their son Robert Carter (c1665-1751 PA) and wife Lydia Wally; their son John Carter (1695-1770) and wife Isabell Atkinson; their son Samuel Carter (1733-1804) and wife Mary Barnes. Left PA for Rockingham Co, VA, then to NC; their son Edward Carter (1761-1838) and wife Mary Brown; their son Jesse Carter (1784-1871) and wife Lavina Sams; their daughter Nancy Matilda Carter (1814-1890) married William H. Cathey. ** I have done some research on this family in NC, but most of the earlier data is from a book on the family, so since it is not mine, I don't intend to put it online, however, I will publish data about the North Carolina and Georgia parts of the family at some point in time. The URL is: http://www.martygrant.com/gen/surname.htm Use whatcha can 'n toss the rest! Cheers! Pat

I'm looking for a family tree that includes a Mauldin Carter (1898-1973). He was the son of James Carter (born GA unknown date, died of typhoid about 1904 possibly in Cherokee Co, NC area). James was married to Mary Bishop (daughter of Calvin Bishop). Mary remaried to Harvey Thomas and they moved to Greenville, SC (1910) and then Spartanburg, SC area (1920). Mary died 1922 near Spartanburg. Mauldin joined the US Army and then returned to northern GA about 1930s. He married Martha Marsh about 1941 and died in Oteen, Buncombe Co, NC in 1973. The family was related to the Jordan/Ward family and he may have been named after John Mauldin who married his aunt Laura Jordan. In his 1918 draft registration, Mauldin Carter said he was of Indian blood.
Guess I will join the party on putting out the missing link Carter's. Also, has anyone on this list considered the Brigham Young University's project of mass DNA collection? They are doing it free. My Carter wall: William Carter (possibly named William James Carter) b. 1806 VA. According to biographies on his son, William's father's name was James and James was of english ancestry and a native of VA. James brought William to TN as a young child (guessing here but had to be from ca 1806-1816) to unknown location in TN. It is known that William lived in Rhea County, married there, and his 4 children were born there. Can't prove it, but I suspect there was a doctor in the Carter line. 2 of William's 3 sons became doctors. William is known to have had a brother named Joseph that moved to MO prior to 1851. Common names in this Carter group: William, James, Charles, Leonidas, Landon, Elizabeth, Ruth, Joseph, Edward. I feel that any of these names, with the exception of Ruth, were of the Carter line that William descended from. In fact, it was by the repeated use of Charles Leonidas that I found the eldest son of William and his descendants in MO. Definitive proof was found and the lines tied together. Still in a holding pattern here!
And it's time for me to post again re my elusive Carter ancestor, Bentley Frederick Carter, my grandfather, born sometime around 1865-ish, probably in GA. It's an unusual enough first name that it should jump out--but it hasn't jumped out for me. Is this familiar to anyone? Regards, Katherine Kurtz
Dear Friends, I'm still trying to find my family,so I'm going to take a different approch. While looking in the Macon Co. census books for 1850,1860,1870,1880 I have put this together if any of this looks like your family please contact me. My family Edmond had a daughter named Sarah she was born around 1843,I don't know where.I have her living in the family until after 1860.In the 1870 census I think I found her married to a William H.Carter and I think he might be from Vir.He was born around 1865. Anyway they had a daughter named Lauiza E. Carter inthe 1870 book, and Malvinia. Then in the 1880 book it shows William H. age 35 married to Sarha E. age 38 with Lorenza age 15, Malvina age 12, and a son William Ed. age 6. If this sounds like your family please contact me. Thank You. Chris Carter
Jacob Carter also had a son John Carter (c1744-?), my ancestor. I am also a Witherington descendent through Amos III Garris' descendents who ended up in Colleton Co. SC along with the Carters. There are some differing opinions on Jacob's father. Some say it was Moore Carter and some think that it was his brother George. It's time for me to post again about my female CARTER I have been searching for info on for over 20 plus years. Any new members of this list may have the info. Any new or regular members of this list have any female CARTER relative that has a first name of Devine and is a decendant of the HOWARD line I would love to hear from! My Devine is my 2nd great-grandmother. Her full name was Devine Howard CARTER bn 1808 somewhere in VA. Her father was William CARTER of VA and only know her mother was a HOWARD connected with Pres. Thomas JEFFERSON lines. She died in 1898 in Spanish Fort,Montague Co.,TX. I have searched the LAST surnames of Devine and Howard. Nothing. Have done searches on web and Ancestry.com. Have done searches for Jefferson's line. I know she existed as I have two wonderful pictures of this tiny little lady. I know that there are two female CARTER women living in the early 1700's with the name of Devine Howard CARTER living in Person Co.,NC. They are from the Groves and Hiram CARTER lines. I believe this is where she is connected to. But I need documentation. I have early female great-grandaughters of hers that were named for her with the Devine name in their middle names and even one in present time. Forgot to say she married Joseph MORELAND of Surry Co.,NC and they lived most of their lives in Walker Co.,GA until 1870 and then she went to Texas with her son, my great grandfather, Joseph MORELAND. Her husband died sometime after 1850. So, I will continue to post about my Devine until someone connects! : ) Anyone put their Carter ancestors picture on the "Dead Fred" web? Thank you anyone for your reply. Michelle Moreland Orlando

The Aylett connection is interesting. I don't think my James was ever in Ohio, but I'm not sure. As far as I know, none of his children were born in Ohio. His 2nd wife (Eliza Jane Evans) and her children were all born in OH, but James and Eliza were married in 1850 in Jasper County Illinois. Bourbon County KY could be a possibility, considering the evolution of the counties: Bourbon County formed 1785. Clark - 1792 from Bourbon and Fayette. Montgomery - 1796 from Clark. Bath - 1811 from Montgomery. (Kentucky became a state in 1792) So it's conceivable that a person could have stayed in one place and lived in four different counties and in both VA and KY. If my James was born in 1800, his parents could not possibly have been born in KY. I'm guessing they were probably born in VA. I'm still convinced that James and Joseph in Montgomery County KY were probably related to each other, but so far the William Aylett Carters just don't seem to connect to them. Do you have any more information about your James H. Carter?
