Hi everyone, Just a query to see if there are others researching CARTER's who settled in New Zealand or Australia [on this list]? Russell www.the-carters.co.nz
Caswell Carter is my odd first names. Caswell could have been born 1799-1805 in GA or VA d before 1850 in Platte Co. MO. M'd Barsheba Linebaugh in Greene County, TN in 1838 Children Mahalah Daniel Martin Rebecca Janet
Oh how I wish I HAD some odd first names to work with! James, John, Joseph....groan. Solomon Carter seems to be the only name that might give me any significant clues. I was following the name "Squire" Carter because of a geographical connection. Found out that wasn't such an odd name after all. "Kenyon" Carter (another geographical connection) led me to some clues, enough to decide that his family was probably not connected to mine. About a couple of months ago when I picked back up on my genealogy work I took a trip to Cumberland Co., NC. Me and my mama went over to the courthouse to look up death certificates. It listed my great-grandmother was being Margaret Freeman. When I noticed her parents' names though it kinda through me. It listed her father as being Tillman E. Carter and her mother as Eva Freeman. It also said I think that there had been a brother. About the only thing I know about Margaret is that she was born Aug. 16. 1914. and died June. 22. 1973. She married Craig Locke Heflin Sr. It listed her birthplace as Florida. and she had a brother. If anyone can help me I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks in advance. Joani Heflin
Carter Aelsey Wilkes, dau. Of William & Lydia (Clark) Wilkes b. 1810 Chester Co, S.C. d. 1843 Chester Co, married about 1830 Chester Co, to Sylvanus Carter. He was b. 1804 Chester Co.. Although without document proof, the following is proof that Syvanus was a son of John & Mary (Estes) Carter 1. Family tradition 2. Mary Estes had a brother Sylvanus for whom Sylvanus Carter was probably named 3. Sylvanus is an unusual given name and does not appear in another family 4. Listed in the 1840 census of the Sylvanus Carter family is an elderly man 60/70 years of age (probably Sylvanus's father, John Carter) 5. In the 1850 census of the same family Sylvanus's age is given as 44 years, and there is a John Carter whose age is given as 86 (this is probably the father of Sylvanus Carter whose age is recorded wrong, it could not have increased 16 years since the 1840 census was taken. Most likely 76 was intended, as that would agree with other family data 6. The belief of competent and experien! ced genealogists who have studied and researched this Carter family 7. The absence of any proof or evidence to the contrary. Children: A. Abner B. John Joseph C. Mary Ann D. William E. Martha F. Leah Thompson G. John Franklin, a casualty of the War between the States. Someone from another list had shared this sometime ago. You read it this like, the first son was named after his father's father and so on. I just looked up some names in Fountain County IN. Land patents were granted to: Brice, Christina, Mary, and Samuel Carter 1850 census index: Amanda, Christina, Elizabeth, John M., Louisa, Martha, Samuel and Thomas. I'm not sure, but I think the Horn surname is connected to my Carters: Ruth Horn m. John Reffit 1811 in Madison County KY. John and Ruth might have been the parents of my James Carter's wife (Marguerite Reffett) >>>> > I see a lot of posts on Fountain, IN which makes me > wonder if these CARTER's are somehow connected to > those of IN. > > I'm also aware of Elon College in NC, however it was > not yet in existence at the time my Elon was born. > > Malatheall, no clue!! > > Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. > > Thanks for your time, > Sharla Linex > > Researching: Paternal: ALLISON, BOSTICK, BURDETTE, > EASTERLY, EPPINETTE, HORN, LENNOX/LENOX/LINEX, > WILLIAMSON > > Maternal: BRANCH, CALLAWAY, > CAMPBELL, CARTER, DEATS, DAWSON, HOLDEN, NICKS, > > __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? List, I'm curious about whether or not it was customary for parents to give their children first names of places?? My 5g grandmother was Selah CARTER b abt 1795 MS m. Charles C. CAMPBELL 9-1-1813 Natchez, Adams Co, MS b.? BTW, there is a Selah River going through MS very near Louisiana. Charles and Selah resided in Franklin County, MS from 1816-1837. A Joseph CARTER signed the marriage license stating that Selah was of age to marry. A Vinson CARTER had Charles C. CAMPBELL as extr in his will. In 1820 there are Joseph, Vinson, James, and a Wm K all on the same page of the census. By 1830 None are there. I cannot locate where they may have gone. Charles and Selah named their children; Elon, Malatheall, Fountain, Permelia, Huldah, and George W. The first three names are quite unusual and makes me wonder just where they came from?? I see a lot of posts on Fountain, IN which makes me wonder if these CARTER's are somehow connected to those of IN. I'm also aware of Elon College in NC, however it was not yet in existence at the time my Elon was born. Malatheall, no clue!! Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Hello! I am reading this line of Carters with much interest as my ggGrandmother, Elizabeth Jane Carter was born 1838 in Fountain County, Indiana. I've yet to find parents or siblings for her. She married 1. James Johnson of Iroquois County, Illinois and 2. Scott S. Ethington of Fountain Co., Ind. In Census' she states her father was b. in Ohio and mother in Pa. That is all I have of her heritage at this time. Thanks for sharing, Marie Cook -----Original Message----- From: Nancy Bower [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Monday, July 22, 2002 7:06 AM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [CARTER-L] CARTER My Carters lived in Vermillion county IN in the 1830's, but my g.g. grandfather, James Carter, migrated to Jasper and Cumberland counties in Illinois. There were two or three different families in Vermillion county at that time, also some Carters in Vigo county, south of Vermillion, and in Clay county. I still haven't figured out whether any of them were related to my James Carter. I do have some bits and pieces of information about the various families. Do you have any more specific info about given names? More specific location? I have no information on a Virgina Jane Holder around the date of 1847, sorry. I do know that Nancy Holder's parents were William and Martha Sanders Holder of Wilkinson Co., Ga. I found reference to William's father being a Thomas and Rebecca Holder. I do not know where they were from or if they resided in Wilkinson Co., GA with the others I am researching. Some of the children I have of Thomas and Rebecca Holder are: William (1821) Married Martha Sanders George W. (1834) James (1832) Married Mary? Jeremiah (1836) Married Rachel? Burrell (1838) Married Mary Elizabeth Branan Lousia (1843) Married Hiram Meadows Jane (1845) Married Joseph Thomas Meadows Maybe this will spark some interest to someone. Daniel Carter
