It can even be a distant Carson cousin as long as there is a paper trail back to the same male Carson ancestor. Many participants in the project were recruited by a female cousin or a male who links maternally to the Carson surname and thus can't do a YDNA test for the Carson lineage because his YDNA came from his father who isn't a Carson. The test involves swabbing inside the cheek using three swab sticks then mailing them back to the lab. The lab provides everything....it's easy.
