It gets so confusing trying to figure all these people out when so many of them shared the same names....seems like ALL Carson families had a William, Samuel, James, John, etc. We just confused on WHICH William made the trip across the ocean from Ireland to America (first into PA, then migrating in various directions. Our family story probably is the same as many of yours. Three brothers from Ireland came to America in 1773 (PA). One of the brothers was WILLIAM (ancestor of my line), the other was Thomas (?) ancestor of the line that Christopher "Kit" Carson, and a third brother, name not known. All three went different directions. The only problem is that there were about 50 William Carsons who were the heads of families around that time in PA...that is our problem, plus the fact that many of the Irish records from! that time period were destroyed (fire?). So hopefully we are going to be able to narrow down our ancestor from Ireland by lots of Carson men taking the YDNA test. Here are my ancestors that I can prove. I will start with my own father and move back in history. My parents: Alvin Corlett CARSON (1911-1971) born and died in Enid, Garfield Co., OK m. Frances A. Seigler (1919-1999) born in Gilmer, TX died in Enid, OK. My grandparents: Evart Lee CARSON (1881-1956) b. Ohio d. Enid, OK m. Winnie Mae Corlett (1883-1972) b. Nebraska d. Enid, OK My great grandparents: Samuel Aten CARSON (1852-1928) b. Ohio d. ? OK? m. Rachel Maria Stoops (1855-194?) b. Ohio d.? My 2nd great grandparents: James Carson (1816-1888) b. Ohio d.? m. Jane Kerr (1819-1900) b. Ohio d. Iowa My 3rd great grandparents: William Carson (1776-1846) b. PA d. Ohio m. Margaret Beattie (1785-1869) b. PA d. Illlinois --------------------------------- DON'T KNOW FOR SURE...BUT THINK THE FOLLOWING COUPLE MIGHT BE THE NEXT GENERATION BACK. I do not have them linked to the previous William as the parents because I cannot prove it yet...but I think they are very likely his parents....so I will include them "just in case"....something to think about. The reason that I think it would be possible is that William and Margaret named one of their daughters Isabella...not a common Carson name. In the following "possible" family....the wife was Isabella Gilmore married William Carson, both from Ireland, both died in Ohio. So the son might have named one of his daughters after his mother, and his daughter's grandmother. Isabella Gilmore (1747-1811) b Ireland d Ohio ============================= BUT, IN A FAMILY BIBLE I FOUND AN OBITUARY FOR A DIFFERENT WILLIAM CARSON. THIS IS WHO MY ANCESTORS THOUGHT WAS THE WILLIAM FROM IRELAND (or why else would they have his obit stuck in the old family Bible). William Carson (1735-1819) b. Ireland d. Chilicothe, Ross Co, Ohio. According to the obit published in the Chilicothe, Ross Co. Ohio newspaper in 1819, William Carson had died at the age of 85. He was the father of 13 children, grandfather of 74 grand children and 7 great-grandchildren at the time of his death. His birth place was Ireland in 1735, and he came to America in 1773. Unfortunately, most obits back in those days were more concerned with the "soul" of the dearly departed than they were with the survivors and other personal information. The obits read more like sermons than stories of someone's life. There is no wife mentioned (living nor dead) and none of the children were named. We do know by documents from that time that he lived in Ross County, OHIO from 1809 until his death...but he could have lived there longer...we just know that he started out in America in PA.
