William Gilmore Carson was the son of William Carson Jr. (1776-1846) and Margaret Beattie Carson (my 3rd Great Grandparents). William (Jr) parents were William Carson and Isabella Gilmore Carson (my 4th GG). Another one of their sons was James Carson who married Jane Kerr Carson (my 2nd GGrandparents). I think I just made that confusing. By your husband's ancestor, William Gilmore Carson was the brother to my 2nd GG James....so before that, we share the same CARSON ancestors...after that, we become cousins. My older brother had his Y-DNA tested for the CARSON surname and he is R1b1a2 (M269). His Y-DNA shows a lot of matches to McCain, Ramsey and other surnames (not just Carson...but there are a lot of marriages into those families within our ancestor's lives. That should show up in our Family Finder or autosomal dna...but interesting that it shows up in the Y-DNA. Kerr is another name linked to my line of Carsons. Jane Kerr's mother's maiden name was Finley....and there are lots of Carson "cousins" who ended up with either Kerr or Finley as middle names.
