It gives a lot of family information as well as frontier and military experiences. Another book that talks about Kit Carson (but he isn't the focus of it) is "Empire of the Summer Moon" by S.C. Gwynne. It centers more on the Comanches and the other tribes of the Plains...but, of course, Kit Carson was interacting with many of these tribes during that time period.
