There is some confusion, as I believe a "soiled dove" adopted her name when she died. That is the "Kit Carson" who stabs a man in Monoville in the summer of 1860. This "Adaline" is the one in the 1860 census listed in Kern County as courtesan. She was later consort to the Daily Gang in Aurora, the subject of the Vigilante action. She was a witness in the defense for their trial. She was illiterate, and could not sign a land deed in 1863, and dies in 1864 of 'dissipation". The real Adaine had at least 10 years of schooling, a college education. She was Arapaho, and probably born in what became Colorado. She had a younger sister, and her mother dies shortly after childbirth. Kit took her to Misouri where she was raised by his family. She was almost certainly not raised Catholic. She joins Kit in Taos in 1850, marries Louis Simons(spelling varies) Simons was an older illiterate Mountain Man, a friend of Kit. He is one of the characters of "Woh Ta Ya" by Louis Gerrard They come to California in 1853 with Kit on the Sheep drive. Kit buys them a ranch as a dowry. Louis is back in Taos by 1857. Adaline comes to Monoville in 1859 with George Stilts. The couple are with the Wilson Family. She dies shortly after childbirth, as her mother did. George Stilts appears in the 1870 census in Idaho. He has a 10 year old son. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
