    1. [CARSON] Spelling of the Carson name
    2. Marilyn Bess
    3. Today we expect to find our surname spelled correctly in public documents. However in the past this was not always true. I could not find a family member of the 1830 census in Cortland County so I ran his first name and found him index under Casson. I then ran that spelling and found a brother never found before in the neighboring township. I am wondering what variable spelling of the Carson name others have found. Thanks Marilyn

    3. Those that transcribe the census do make errors and little r's and s's look alike, as do a's and o's. Unfortunately, that's the Carson name! Carron and Casson are all legitimate names, Corson and Carsan too (though I don't think they're popular). Casson and Corson are probably the top two errors. But don't forget Karson, soundex won't help you with that one, though I've rarely seen it (I had a Kierson once). When you just KNOW someone is there, I've tried searching by their first name, age, and place of birth and left the surname blank.
