    3. I also wanted to mention that you can do the 12 marker for $99 (group price) and then upgrade if you want to, which you would if you had exact 12/12 matches, as that would refine the relationship. Gary has a 25/25 match now and waiting on the last set of the 37. If they match 37/37, both of them will probably consider the 67 upgrade, which is as high as it gets. Now, I'm NOT an expert at this, but a complete 67 match is only going to be a couple generations away from the common ancestor. Anyway, I'm going to do the "layaway" plan and do the 12 first, then upgrade, and maybe upgrade again. Yes, you can pay for someone else's test, all females need to do that. I'm paying for my father's. It is recommended to do the oldest generation that you can. It must be a male Carson that got his surname from a male Carson, all the way back as far as you know it. If one male in the chain was adopted or took his surname from his mother, then his Y-DNA is NOT Carson. --- Sheila Pool <[email protected]> wrote: > Another Carson descendant here......I would like to > know more about the price, etc.

    2. I paid $189 (plus tax because I'm in Texas) for the 37 marker YDNA test. The 12 marker basic test is about $99 but is less accurate. I did the 37 marker which, if there's a match, indicates a much closer link. The Carson DNA site has a link to the Family Tree DNA service that performs the tests. Here's a link to the Carson DNA website. From there, you can click on "Recruitment" to go to the test service to sign up for the YDNA test (or other tests). http://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/c/carson/rec.html Gary

My ggrandfathere WILLLIAM CARSON, who married Sarah Carson in Boston in the 1800s, came from County Tyrone also in the 1800s. They raised their four children, Harold, Roberta, Frank and Don. in the Boston area of Massachusetts. According to a cousin, a sibling of either William or Sarah was Elizabeth Reed. I believe Elizabeth Reed, who had a daughter also named Elizabeth Reed, worked in a bank in Dorchester or Roxbury MA. It is an ongoing source of regret that I have failed miserably the task of finding other Carson cousins in Massachusetts or even in New England. Siblings of Sarah and William are reported to be in Pennsylvania and Connecticut and are associated with the surnames of CRAWFORD and PHELPS. Sadly, I have no further information on ELIZABETH REED, except a census or two. Like so many family historian wannabees, I wasn't serious about genealogy until key family members were dead or couldn't remember. If I could find a cousin with WILLIAM CARSON I have some information, including marriage and funeral certificate, work history with the City of Boston over thirty years, his will, burial information, census records, a conjecture that he came from Fintona , Couny Tyrone and photos. I know much less about his wife, Sarah, except that either she, or her mother, Mary Erwin, might have been a school teacher in Amagh before she came to the U.S. I'm happy to share what I do have. 3. Hi Everyone, I have enjoyed the e-mails coming through. Just wish I could connect my female CARSON to one of your lines. I've posted what little I know about my CARSON line before but thought I would try again. Annie CARSON would be one of my 3rd great paternal grandmothers. According to the 1850 Jefferson Twp., Allegheny Co., Pa Census, Annie would be born about 1794 in Pa. Annie married Henry GREGG. From GREGG family genealogy we learned that Henry was born May 16, 1794 in Northern Ireland. Annie and Henry's marriage date was Oct 11, 1818 in Derry Twp. Westmoreland Co., Pa. This information came from Westmoreland County Marriages & Deaths from Weekly Newspapers 1818-1865 Vol. 1 by Fischer, Gregg, Henry & Ann Carson both Derry Twp. married 10-22-1818 by John Shaw Esq. (10-31-1818). No parents names were given. Sometime between the 1850 census and the 1860 census I loose Annie and Henry. I feel they must of died as I found all their children except James. GREGG genealogy says he died young. The following are Annie and Henry's children and the names of their spouses. Ane Maria GREGG born Dec 2, 1819 Pa died Feb 4, 1892 married Samuel C. WATSON Nancy Jane Gregg born 1826 Pa died Jan 30, 1892 married William Hoffman KING Margaret F. Gregg born Jan 13, 1828 Pa. died Oct 19, 1902 Pa married Aron WATSON Joseph Carson Gregg born 1829 Pa. died April 4, 1891 married Isabelle HANEY Emily H. Gregg born March 15, 1832 Pa died Oct 20, 1904 Allegheny Co., Pa married Adam Walton SMITH (my 2nd great paternal grandparents) Samuel T. Gregg born June 13, 1835 died 1915 married Eliza T. J. CRAVEN James Gregg Just a side note - My son, who doesn't pay a lot of attention to my genealogy, had a rock and roll band back in the 1990's. At that time he and his wife, before children, took snow skiing vacations to Colorado. The name Kit Carson is so popular where they would ski that he named his band Kit Carson. Check < http://www.firstworldwar.com/bio/carson.htm > and a quote from that web page: Sir Edward Henry Carson (1854-1935) led the paramilitary Ulster Volunteer Force in opposing Home Rule plans for the whole of Ireland, eventually succeeding in ensuring Northern Ireland remained part of the union. End quote Thus our Carson Family is resonsible for the break up of Ireland into the North and South of today My Carsons My Carsons are around the Barrie Ontario area and the problem I have found is that there are too many Willism Carsons in my family without middle names. 1. [CARSON] Not all Carson lines in US are related
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/DiH.2ACEB/1757 Message Board Post: There was a recent posting (can't find it now) that some think all Carsons in the US are related and connect to Kit Carson. The YDNA results of those Carson males who have tested so far indicate otherwise. There are actually two distinct lines (genetically) of Carsons in the US. One is from the "R" western European haplogroup (with variations within that group) and the other line is from the "I" Nordic (Viking or Scandinavian) haplogroup. The "R" group is much more common that the "I" group in Britain. According to genetic experts, these two lines are not genetically related unless we go back thousands of years. One of those from the I haplogroup says they connect to the Kit Carson line. I've not seen details confirming that connection. One or some from the R haplogroup may also say they connect. My main goal right now is to trace my ancestry with as much supporting data as possible. Who knows what may turn up! Gary

    2. Hi Patricia, The name was spelled Reed on the marriage record in Guilford 1779. Back then last names changed randomly, partly due to a lack of spelling skills of census takers and of the people in general. Also, they often spelled it like it sounded. Also, some records are transcribed and the person couldn't read the handwriting. Some branches ended up one way while others went a different direction, even from the same ancestor line. For example, the "Strain" surname was sometimes spelled Strayhorn, Strahan, Strane and Strain, all from the same ancestor line. My Wilkie/Wilkey line shows up spelled Willkie, Willkey, Wilkin, Wilken, Wilkins and even Williams. The Bailey line was spelled Baley, Bailie, Bailey, Bayley, etc. My Custis line shows up sometimes as Curtis. Owens was spelled Owen, Owing, Owin, etc. A Carrington branch ended up Carrigan, apparently due to the census taker's error. Evolving spelling makes it a challenge to say the least! Gary

    2. Margaret is in my line as well. I have two Reed lines in NC late 1700s have tried to connect them and do feel they are connect in as they all moved into middle TN early 1800s. And one of these lines I believe is connected to the Alexander Reid/Reed line in Rowan Co. By the way the only way Reed was spelled in the early records at the NC Archives is Reid. Do you know if or when your/my Reed changed their spelling? Patricia

    2. Patricia, I've discussed Carson connections with quite a few surnames, so I'm not sure if we compared notes before or not. Your posting only asked the surname Reid/Reed with no details so I couldn't tell where or when they connected to a Carson line. Margaret Carson married John Reed 1779 in Guilford NC. Margaret seems to connect to my Carson line in that area, either a daughter or niece....not sure yet. Gary

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/DiH.2ACEB/1753.1.1 Message Board Post: Kim, The participant in the YDNA has to be a male Carson who got his surname from the father's side all the way back (if the test is being done to find a Carson surname connection that is). That's because the Y chromosome is passed only from male to male regardless of the surname the son uses. The cost was $189 for the 37 marker I did. The basic 12 marker I think is $99 and the 25 marker is somewhere in between. Gary
