I am either the great-great grand niece, or the great- great grand daughter of Kit. I have our family traced to my great-great grandma, who family legend sayes is Kit Carson sister, Elizabeth. But in my searches, and given her birth date and his activities at the time of her birth, it's starting to look like she might be his daughter by his first wife, or something.... Anyway, I have compiled quite a bit of info. on the Carson family and you are welcome to contact me about it. E=mail me here and we can go from there, if you are still interested. C. The "I" Nordic Carson DNA I connect with is closely matched it seems, suggesting a recent common ancestor. I had no clue that would happen when I signed up. The "R" western European Carsons, a much larger bunch it seems, has to connect within certain lines. I hope more male Carsons decide to do the YDNA test. At least that confirms or eliminates certain connections. We'll keep researching! Gary

Regarding John Carson and Sarah Dickey, I don't have an answer yet. So many family trees online I've seen are based on secondary sources. The findings (in my line) do suggest the name Alexander occurs repeatedly. The name John is in almost all lines. The YDNA results so far suggest that the male Carsons in Lancaster PA born 1730s (Moses, David, William, Robert and probably John) were either brothers or cousins or closely connected. The originating locations for these (from Scotland and northern Ireland) were New Castle DE, Lancaster PA, and SC. Some moved to NC (Rowan, Rutherford and Orange/Caswell) then to eastern TN by the 1780s. One branch went to Washington Co PA. Another branch went from SC to Hardin Co KY. There was an Alexander Carson (died 1775) and younger James Carson (possibly Alexander's son) in Orange NC who connect somehow. I'm hoping more male Carsons do the DNA test. That has helped at least confirm some connections or otherwise. Please reply with any theories and thoughts. Gary

Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.carson/1768.3/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi again Cindy, I just found out that my YDNA results match exactly those of a descendant of Andrew Carson born c1767 (married Elizabeth Hannah Washington Co TN 1790). This particular Carson line is the only one from the Nordic haplogroup, and all are an exact match so far. This Andrew Carson was a son of Moses Carson born c1737 who married Elizabeth Hannah in Lancaster PA. Moses along with William, David and Robert Carson (all born 1730s married 1753-1760 in Paxtang, Lancaster PA) moved together from Lancaster PA to NC 1760s-1770s then to Washington Co TN 1780s (or at least Moses, David and William moved to TN per deeds). My David Carson ancestor born 1755-65 was a son of one of them (William and David Sr both had sons named David). My David was in eastern TN from 1793-1798 or so. Then he moved back to NC 1799. David Carson (the one in you line) shows up in Blount Co TN 1797. There was also a Little David who shows up in Washington TN c1795 and may be the one who died there in 1811. The older David Sr. seems to have sold his land and left the county. If you had a male Carson to do the YDNA (even a 12 marker) that might confirm a connection or otherwise. This groups seems to be related. Thanks, Gary Carson

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/DiH.2ACEB/1201.2.1.1.1.1.2 Message Board Post: Betty (and other Carson researchers), I'm following up on some earlier discussion about the various PA Carsons. I did the YDNA test a few months ago, and there are now 4 exact matches among Carson male descendants. Three are out of PA and one came directly to SC. Below is a link to the Carson DNA website followed by a description of these 4 Carson lines that match (using my own findings and findings of various other dedicated researchers) Gary Carson http://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/c/carson/index.html MATCH 1 (my ancestor) David Carson born 1755-65 probably Lancaster PA died c1828 Haywood NC m. Catherine (last name believed to be Patterson, daughter of Matthew Patterson). Findings suggest David's family moved to NC c1760s, possibly Rowan County, then to Orange/Caswell NC, then to Washington/Greene Co TN by 1781-1784. I think David actually married in Rutherford NC c1788 where Matthew Patterson (his presumed father in law) was living and moved to Washington/Greene TN near parent/siblings c1793 then left TN c1798 to return to NC. David was in the Buncombe and Haywoo NC 1800-1820. David's probable parents (from Lancaster PA) were William Carson/Margaret McCord (most likely) or David Carson Sr./Sarah Woods (less of a fit for various reasons). Both had sons named David and they moved together to NC then to TN. Robert and Moses Carson who came to TN also apparently connect to William and David Sr. There was also a John Carson and some other Williams. MATCH 2 Andrew Carson born c1770 Lancaster PA married Elizabeth Hannah 1790 in Washington Co TN. Andrew is listed as a son of Moses Carson and Elizabeth Hannah who married c1763 Lancaster PA. Andrew's mother Elizabeth was a daughter of Andrew Hannah who died 1760 in Lancaster with his children listed in the estate record. Andrew's wife might have been a cousin or a widowed inlaw. Moses and family moved from Lancaster PA to Caswell/Orange by 1770s. William and David from Lancaster PA also moved there.and a Robert, John and Alexander were there earlier. Moses, William, David and possibly Robert's familes moved together to Washington Co TN 1781-1784. MATCH 3 John Carson born about 1747 in Ireland. John Carson arrived on the Earl of Denegal (from Belfast) on December 10, 1767 when he was 20 and lived on Rocky Creek, Craven District. SC. Among the other passengers were Patrick and Mary Harbison. About 1800 Mary Harbison died leaving her land to "my son, Alexander Carson". John Carson married Elizabeth (LNU). He moved to KY around 1792, living in Fayette, Jessamine counties. He died in Hardin Co, Kentucky. John's will was dated 21 April 1823 and executed 30 Nov 1824, witnessed by an Alexander Carson. MATCH 4 Thomas Carson born Abt. 1740 in Scotland, and died Jan 16, 1816 in Fallowfield Twp, Washington Co, Pennsylvania. He married Mary Smith Jan 28, 1762 in New Castle Co, Delaware. She was born Abt. 1745 in Scotland, and died in Washington Co, Pennsylvania. RELATED NOTES: At this time, my David Carson is believed to be a son of a William Carson/Margaret McCord (most likely), David CarsonSr./Sarah Woods (possible though less likely) or, in a stretch, Robert Carson/Margaret Woods or a John Carson, all from Lancaster. All of these couples married in Paxtang, Lancaster PA 1753-1760 as did Moses Carson and Elizabeth Hannah (parents of Andrew Carson) and moved to NC then most end up in eastern TN together.

    2. Patricia, Reed researchers who say Margaret Carson (married John Reed 1779 Guilford) was born in 1762. I've been trying to determine if she connects directly or indirectly to my Carson lines. There was a William Carson in sw Caswell NC 1778-1779 who was married to Margaret McCord 1760 Lancaster PA. I speculated he might have been the bondsman. This William died 1790 Washington TN and mentioned oldest daughter Jennet and second daughter Mary. He doesn't mention other daughters. A David Carson and wife Sarah Woods (married 1753 Lancaster PA) also moved to Caswell with the others. A Robert Carson married Margaret Woods (Sarah's sister) in 1755 Lancaster PA, and I speculate they also moved to this area of NC. A Robert Carson had earlier been in Caswell NC (formerly Orange) in the 1760s next to where William Carson and David lived on the South Hyco River. Then, a Robert Carson was on Belues Creek in western Guilford c1777 next to some Carson inlaws (Woods, Strain and some Hannahs) connected to the Lancaster bunch. Robert's land later falls into Rockingham County. A Robert Carson died 1807 in Iredell NC with a widow named Margaret (an index says the will also mentions Margaret Jr, Samuel, Andrew, David, Martha and Mary although I've not seen the text). Geographically, Robert is the closest Carson I've found to where Margaret married. David and Sarah had daughters Margaret born 1754 (too old if her dob is correct) and Mary born 1756 in Lancaster PA. An Elizabeth and Mary Carson married Thomas and James Bell respecitvely in the early/mid 1770s in Guilford (at Buffalo Presbyterian). These Carson females appear to be connected to the Lancaster group. Elizabeth may be David's daughter based on the names of her children (included a David and Sarah). Mary could have been David's daughter born 1756 (age fits). These Bells are in Washington Co TN by the 1790s where David and William also moved. Thomas Bell died in 1792 with a Robert Carson witnessing his will. This is part theory and fact so far...still researching. Gary
