Author: jasche Surnames: Carson Classification: cemetery Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.carson/2599.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Burial: CARSON, Erskine Apr 16, 1838 - Jul 25, 1894 Greenview Cemetery, Chillicothe, Scioto Twp, Ross County, Ohio "Tombstone Inscriptions of Grandview Cemetery," Compiled by the Ross Co Genealogical Society (1999) Page 21 _______________ E. CARSON, Postmaster.--Among those who have been actively identified with public affairs, both in this and his native county, we refer to Mr. E. Carson, our present postmaster. Mr. Carson is a native of Chillicothe, in this State, where he was born in 1838. After completing his literary education in his native place, he became identified with railroad work, from 1856 to the breaking out of the war of the rebellion was in the employ of the Marietta and Cincinnati railroad. The toxin of war and the threatened disruption of the Union, led his in Oct. 1861, to forsake the quiet walks of life and enter the army in the defense of our national integrity and honor. Becoming a member of of Co. I, 73rd O. V. I., he served with credit and distinction through battle bivouac and march until disabled by a gunshot wound received at the second battle of "Bull Run," receiving his honorable discharge Oct. 21, 1862. Few persons have carried with them, every day, a wound which was a constant ! reminder of our national conflict. Ever since receiving this wound, Mr. Carson has been obliged to have it dressed three times each day. In 1863 he was called upon by his fellow citizens of Ross county to fill the position of clerk of courts, after which he again engaged in railroad work, and previous to receiving the appointment of postmaster of this place, April 18th, 1890, he filled the position of station agent here for the C., W. & V railroad, now the B. & O. S. W. R'y. As a matter of public record and history, we may be permitted to recall an incident in which Mr. Carson was incidentally the means of breaking out the famous reply of Gov. Foraker, in the matter of returning "Rebel Flags." The proposition incited comments in all sections, and the following correspondence fully explains, itself: Hillsboro, June 15, 1887 Gov. J. B. Foraker, Columbus, O.: The old soldiers of Hillsboro hope you will not give up any captured rebel flags in the State House, at Columbus-intense feeling among the boys who wore the blue. E. Carson To which Mr. Carson Received the following: Executive Chambers, Columbus, Ohio June 15, 1887 E. Carson Esq. Hillsboro, O.: "No Rebel flags will be surrendered while I am governor J. B. Foraker" Under the administration of Mr. Carson the postoffice here has received his personal attention, and its departments so systematized as to insure the highest efficiency and public convenience. 2. I have Carson's that I assume came from Scotland but have only tracked them to Centre County, PA. I couldn't believe there are so many and they are pretty much James and John. Mine are James Carson, married to Sarah Edmiston father of John E Carson married to Mary Elizabeth McCreath. John is my G Grandfather and his son Park Edward Carson is my grandfather. John moved across the US and had Children along the way and wound up in Tacoma, WA. Of course they are all dead so have no one to ask questions of. Just thought I would run this by you as there was a Samuel A. Carson, son of John and Mary born July 6th, 1899. I'm kind of wondering if there wasn't a Samuel in James family as it would appear that their children are named after other members of the family. Samuel died March 6, 1960. Let me know if you think there may be a link here. Craig MD. "Dr. James W. Craig was born in Belmont County, Ohio, Jan. 17, 1826. His father, Samuel C. Craig, was a native of Beaver County, Pa., who settled in Belmont County and afterward in this county near Shelby, where he spent the remainder of his life upon a farm." "A.A. Graham History of Richland County OH 1880 Currans were the first actual settlers in township about 1815/16. Setteling on section 15 about 1820 was Almon Hayes in 1820. The early settler who came a little later wereSection 16 Carson Craig, David Funk, John Grailow and John Rice." Samuel Carson Craig often went by his middle name. He is burried in Richland County OH. He was born about 1788. d. February 7, 1862 in Richland County OH. I was hoping that since he used his middle name as a given name, in part to distinguish himself from another Samuel Craig in Richland County. That he may have been honoring his mothers side of the family. Does anyone on the Carson site have any additional information on James Craig married to Elizabeth Carson, and Elizabeth Carsons' family? Samuel Carson Craig's other children are: Margaret b. about 1825 James W. b. about 1826 Milton b. about 1828 William December 3, 1832 (my line) Elizabeth b. about 1833 Joseph b. March 29, 1835 Mary b. about 1839 Thanks again. Any one wishing information on William and decendants I am willing to help.
