He was closer to the family (timewise), and so I am inclined to accept his words as fairly accurate. Too bad he didn't include the names of the ladies in question! I believe I've heard that David's first wife may have been the victim of Indians, but I have nothing substantive on that question. I do, however, have copies of both David and Roberts wills as well as that of Robert Beaty which confirms that David Carson was the husband of his daughter Elizabeth. David Carson's name was listed as the recipient of Elizabeth's share of her father's estate. (I've included a copy of my transcription of the accounts portion of R. Beaty's estate document) So, I believe that the record of David Carson and Elizabeth Beaty's marriage in Philadelphia is correct - but for 1784 not 1884. The book that includes this transcription is available on Google books, if I remember correctly. The other entries on the same page are all from the late 1700's... not 1800's. So my two mysteries remain - who was David's first wife. And was Robert's wife really Margaret Bates? He was married twice, we both know that. According to "Sketches from the Carson Family- John M. Carson, Centennial" - George W. Carson,Attorney at Law of Council Bluffs, Iowa, in 1894 tells the story as this: "...about the time that Robert became of age he married, and of that union our great, great, grandfather, David Carson, was born in 1741. David was twice married. Of the first union, Robert Carson was born in 1762 in Chester County, Pennsylvania. Other children born of this union were sons, James and George, and a daughter Mary Anne, of the second union the sons Hiram and David were born..." "Concerning his grandfather and his brother who were also the brothers of our great grandfather, robert Carson (1762). The brothers were Hiram and George. I have often heard my father tell the same story. Hiram and Geroge were chums and took each otthers part in battles of the period. In those days an insulting remark called for a blow, hiram often said he never was laid on his back in a wrestling match, and whipped every man he fought with, he was not quarrelsome and seldom became involved. he was very strong and has lifted a 40 gallon whiskey barrel full with 15 hides thereon, by the chimes and fingerends. Our great grandfather, Robert Carson improved and lived upon a farm in Chester County, Pennsyvania, but the settlers were driven out by an indian war and he returned to the old homestead and became owner by will of his father, Robert. This will is on record at West Chester, Pennsylvania. This information given me November 10, 1894 at Carlock hotel, Tecumseh, Oklahaoma. Respectfully submitted, Geo. W. Carson" Also, the marriage between a David Carson and a Elizabeth Beatty was listed as "1884, March 30, Carson, David, and Elizabeth Beatty." This cannot be the same David because he died before this. It also takes place at Philadelphia Church which is miles from the Forks of the Brandywine Church in which he was a pewholder with his father. I hope this helps some. You may already have the George W. Carson testimony. Debbie Carson Hawkins Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Some of those list his date of birth around 1700. Others listed it as your Robert born 1762 PA. Many of those family trees listing him born 1700 tie to that phantom Alexander Harvey Carson person born 1650s and they have a jumble of Carson children and grandchildren, many of whom aren't connected. I suspect that various researchers have tried to connect their lines to the famous Kit Carson line, in turn causing major errors in many other Carson family trees when others pick up those errors as fact. I found a funeral for a child of an Alexander Carson in Belfast N Ireland dated 1719. That's the year some of the family trees say Alexander Harvey Carson died, but it was actually a child's funeral. I'm also trying to sort out my Robert Carson (born 1730s) who married Margaret Woods in Lancaster Co PA and moved to Orange Co NC c1758 then to eastern TN (I think) around 1780. There was Robert in Rowan/Iredell NC 1761 who had a brother William (his 1759 will mentions brother Robert). In 1780, Robert sells his land there (with wife Margaret signing the deed). There was a Robert/Margaret in nearby Chester SC who bought land c1772 on Suzey Bolls branch then sells out in 1775, apparently leaving the area. There was a Robert/Margaret in Jefferson Co TN c1800 selling a lot in Dandridge. In 1815, Ruth Carson Patterson in Washington Co TN sues a Robert and Peggy (Peggy is a nickname for Margaret), "now residents of OH", for her dower (her husband William Carson Jr had died 1796 Washington Co TN). On another note, there was a William Carson born 1720 N Ireland died 1791 Fayette Co PA (wife Sarah) whose descendant is an almost exact YDNA match with me (and with your Carson relative). That William had these children (according to various descendants): William Carson Jr b1748 married Rachel Wilson John Carson Alexander Carson Elizabeth Carson Jeane Carson Sarah Carson I've also been researching in Ireland prior to 1750. I found some connecting surnames in church records there near Carson families. Gary Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Family history points to his first wife dying from an Indian raid in Cumberland County before he returned to Chester County near his father, Robert. As to the Bates name, there is a possibility that Margaret was an aunt or cousin to Elizabeth. Grandparent's name of Bates? I have tried to find this connection. I know there has to be a simple explanation and the coincidence of the Bates name being so close to Margaret's generation has to point us to the existence of her last name as Bates, eventually! I know that through family history, my David Carson's first wife was killed by natives when they were in the frontier of Cumberland County. He then returned to Chester County and lived near his father. They attended Forks of Brandywine Church and are listed as pewholders. David is buried in the original cemetary along with Elizabeth. I wanted to assume that Robert, his father was buried there but there is no record. I visited this area two years ago and talked to people at the church. I connected the Elizabeth to Beatty's also as there were Beatty's at this church during this time period. I don't think David and his first wife had any children. Even though our DNA is traced through the Carson's I wonder if there is any possibility that there is a connection with other bloodlines.Sorry I haven't been much help lately. I would love to find the evidence that Debi is also looking for in the Margaret Bates/Robert Carson marriage. Somewhere in my family history I remember an old! er relative saying that Margaret's last name was Bates but I don't know where she got her information from. The online listing for the Swamp Cemetary in Ohio lists her as Margaret. Why oh Why, did women's last names not seem important in wills, burials, marriage records, etc.! Our job would be so much easier! Debbie Carson Hawkins Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Yes, I have Robert Beaty's will, too, which mentions his daughter Elizabeth Carson and - in the list of accounts paid - clearly identifies David Carson as the recipient of Elizabeth's share of her father's estate. I have also seen the mention of their marriage in Philadelphia in 1784. But, David had several children b. before his 1784 marriage to Elizabeth. So, a first as yet unidentified wife is likely - and my current "brick wall". It is her that I seek to identify, as she would be the mother of Robert b. 1762, my husband's ancestor as well as David's older children. Many of the Carson families used the same given names (over and over and over again!), making it difficult at times to distinguish which David or which Robert is referred to in each piece of evidence. That line is a close YDNA match with me. My ancestors are a Robert Carson who married Margaret Woods 1755 in Lancaster Co PA (Paxtang). They moved to NC/TN. Moses Carson's descendants are an exact match with me. Moses (born 1737 married Elizabeth Hannah) and my Robert are presumed to be brothers. Do you have a copy of David Carson's will 1829? I'd like a transcription if possible. The Mary Carson born "after 1806" was a daughter of Robert Carson b1762 (may had had a typo in my message). David Carson had a daughter named Mary Anne born 1788 married George Young. They both died and left small children (apparently are some guardianship documents). On a side note, the 1746 Chester PA will of John Williams in West Caln says his daughter is Elizabeth Carson. David Carson m. Elizabeth Beathy/Beatty 30 Mar 1784 Second Presby in Philadelphia. A David Carson married Sarah Wood 29 Aug 1785 at Third Presby. Philadelphia. There was a Robert Carson died 15 Sep 1759 according to Philadelphia church records, stating his father was named Robert. 4 Oct 1760 Cumberland PA Moses Carson was deed the goods and chattels of Robert Carson deceased.
