This is interesting as my great grandfather was Charles Jefferson Carson, born in South Carolina. He is buried in Toliver Cemetery in Comanche Co., Texas (which borders Hamilton & Erath counties). Family has always been told that the J. Carson buried next to him is one of his brothers and that his full name was James. ----- Original Message ----- From: gc-gateway@rootsweb.com To: carson-l@rootsweb.com Sent: Sunday, October 16, 2011 10:47 PM Subject: Re: [CARSON] James Carson b.abt 1830 TN This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. I do not know who the parents of James Carson are. I do know that Mary A. Carson was Mary A. Gilmore when James Carson married her. Mary was the widow of Stephen Gilmore. He died in Greene Co., MO, in 1864/1865. When James Carson married Mary Gilmore, she brought several children to the marriage with the last name of Gilmore. Mary's maiden name was Wardlow or Wadlow. You can find Stephen Gilmore and Mary A. Wadlow/Wardlow in RootsWeb or Ancestry.com. I can give you information on Armsted Carson, if you are interested. I personally know a cousin of yours. He and his wife live in Oregon. He descends from the Thomas C. Carson that is listed in the 1870 Federal Census. James and Mary Carson moved to Erath Co., TX. They might have died in Erath Co.. The son they were living with moved to another county in Texas, Palo Pinto possibly. James and Mary Carson were not in the household of their son in the 1910 Federal Census. I hope this helps. I'm researching the same links you are. My great-great grandfather James Henry Carson would have been your great-great grandmother's brother I believe. I have solid links back through their grandfather James Carson but lose the connection between James and Adam. (I've found it in other trees but based on the dates I find the connections tenuous at best.) There are some good resources out there regarding some of the Carsons in Sheboygan and their links to Maine (http://sheboyganhistory.com/b/carson1.htm) and I have additional resource links to plat maps and town maps listing the Carsons and their properties in Sheboygan and the Kennebec, Maine area if you would like me to send them. If I can find anymore information going back from James Carson (our great-great-great-great grandfather :) I'll post it here. Author: gkcarson Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.carson/1364.2.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi Patty, My Carson line arrived in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania or nearby 1740s from N Ireland, most likely County Down. The most likely parish for my Carson origin (1720s or prior) I've found is Ballyphilip (town of Portaferry) and maybe Ballyatwood, Ballyculter and Ballyvester(sic). A William Carson was curate in Ballyculter 1730, son of Robert Carson gentleman of County Down. William Carson was educated by Mr. Robert Hannah (the Carson and Hannah families intermarried in VA 1750s). Slanes Graveyard in Ballyphilip parish (Church of Ireland) contains the graves of Rachel Carson b 1679 d 1766 and husband John McComb and his parents Alexander McComb 1644-1724 and mother Mary Maxwell 1650-1693. Donaghadee Graveyard - Ballyvester (County Down) contains graves of William Carson 1783-1835, wife Elizabeth, James Carson 1792-1877 (wife Elizabeth) and their son Robert Carson. The Catherwood surname connects somehow, and there were some Hannah surnames in that area too. Around 1700 in that area, some Hanna/Hannah lineages were Presbyterian (Scots) and some were Irish Catholic. All of the Carson lineages I've found were Presbyterian (Scots). Some connecting surnames in PA were also in First Presbyterian Killyleagh parish records (County Down)1700-1730. Those surnames included Strain/Strean, Hannah, Woods, Stevenson/Stephenson, and Ritchey. There was also a cluster of Carson and related names in Belfast Second Presbyterian records 1680s-1730s that show up in PA together (intermarrying). Do you know of any male Carson descendants in County Down (or with a paper trail originating there)? I'd like to find a living male Carson descending from one of these County Down lineages to do a YDNA test to see if the results match with my Carson line. DNA takes my husband back to Uriah b 1743. Some people have him as William Uriah. Our line goes Uriah, John, Jacob, Eli William, Joseph, Arthur, Frank and then my husband. She was born, lived and died in Wisconsin. Her parents were David Morrill Carson and Mary Jane Robinson from Maine, USA. It looks like my sixth-great grandparents may have been Adam Carson and Alice Alexander. Adam may have been from Ireland. Any help filling in the blanks would be great.
