The Samuel who died in York Co. PA in 1759 had a wife Janet. There is no proof of a last name for her. This is not my family but I have McClung's books: "Carson-Bent-Boggs" about that family. The other Samuel died in Chester Co. in 1766. He is the one who married Jane Patterson. The only way we know this is from a short genealogy written by a grandson. After Jane died Samuel remarried a Sarah Reece Wallace. The David Carson who went to TN was not part of the family of Samuel Carson and Jane Patterson.

If you can offer any hints, that would be great. My ancestor David Carson was born 1755-65 (probably in PA) and lived in eastern TN 1785-1799 or thereabouts then moved to Buncombe NC. His wife named Catherine may have been a Patterson based on his involvement in a will of Samuel Patterson in Haywood NC 1815 (father maybe a Mathew or Samuel Patterson). David and Catherine named their children Matthew, Catherine, Virginia Jane, Samuel John, Ambrose and William and maybe Robert (plus 4 more daughters). A William Carson married Margaret McCord in 1760 in Dauphine/Lancaster PA. In 1790, a William Carson died in Washington TN and left a widow named Margaret along with daughters Janet and Mary and sons William, John and (based on other county records) sons David and Robert and one more son. David Carson was an executor of the will. I thought these may be the same people and his parents. There were some Patterson/Carson connections in Washington Co TN. Do you have information or abstracts on the 1766 and 1759 wills of the two Samuel Carsons in PA? That might help sort of some things. I think our line connects with one of those but I'm not sure which one. Thanks, Gary Carson Texas

The Ambrose McCord Carson may connect with some Carson/McCord marriages in PA and/or eastern TN. There were several McCords in Washington Co. TN 1780-1800 that married Carsons. My ancestor David Carson born 1755-65 lived near the McCords in Washington TN. Right now I'm trying to determine if he was a son of William Carson who married Margaret McCord 1760 back in Dauphin (Lancaster) Co PA. Our David named a son Ambrose Carson. That's the first appearance of Ambrose in the Carson family. There were 3 Ambrose Carsons who seem to originate from eastern TN around 1800, and I think they may connect to the McCord family of PA. I haven't yet determined which line Margaret McCord (born c1740) came from but probably was related to one of the Ambrose McCords. Gary Carson

Wright. In 1805 a Samuel "McColl" bought lots near Kingston, TN. In 1808, a Samuel "McCall" filed a homestead claim on White Oak Creek. In 1808 Samuel McCauley appears in Capt. Jesse Rather's company. There seem to have been two "Sam McCallie" in the county in 1830 - one south of the river, a male 30/40 with a boy under 5. The one north of the river, which would have been the present county of Roane had: a boy 10/15; 2 boys 15/20; boy age 20 a girl 5/10; 2 girls; 10-15; 2 girls 15-20; 2 girls 20/30 (Elizabeth). In 1840 the family moved to Dade Co.,a Ga. There appeared Samuel Carson with a wife 30/40 and Samuel McCauley 60/70. Samuel Carson married Elizabeth "Betsy" McCauley. They moved to DeKalb Co., Elizabeth appears in the 1850 census with no husband. (There is a will on file in DeKalb Co., AL. for Samuel Carson who died in the mid 1840's.) Elizabeth was age 44 in the 1850 census. Samuel and Betsy had the following children: Mary E; John (d. in Civil War); Caroline (md. Charles Lewis Driskill), William: Margaret E. Samuel was buried in White Hall Cemetery in DeKalb Co., AL. No dates appear on his stone. Your evaluation will be appreciated.

Nelson & Co., 1894, Page 890 ENOCH T. CARSON, president of the Knights Templar Insurance Company, was born September 18, 1822, in Green township, this county, and is a son of William J. and Margaret (Terry) Carson. His maternal ancestors came from Virginia, and were among the first settlers in Cincinnati. Our subject remained with his father on the farm until his twenty-third year, when he served three years as collector of tolls on the Cincinnati and Harrison turnpike, during which time he largely made up the deficiencies of his early education by systematic reading during his leisure hours. In 1848 he was appointed deputy sheriff of Hamilton county, and served for two years. He then entered the employ of the Hamilton & Dayton Railroad Company, where he remained two years, and became their first depot master at the Sixth Street Depot, Cincinnati, In November, 1852, he was appointed chief deputy sheriff of Hamilton county, the duties of which office he faithfully executed for four years, Two years after the expiration of his term of office he engaged in the lamp and gas business, which he followed until 1861, when President Lincoln appointed him United States repository and collector of the Port of Cincinnati, an office which, with the outbreak of the Rebellion, developed fro! m a minor position to one of vital importance. Cincinnati being the distributing point for the armies South, questions arose of the most perplexing nature, and requiring the soundest. judgment to correctly adjust. During his administration ten million dollars were sometimes received in a single day, and the amount on deposit upon one occasion reached the enormous sum of thirty millions. To stand keeper of such vast stores almost within hearing of the famished Confederacy's cannon certainly required great courage, but he remained in the position until the close of the war, when he retired from office, and the following year made an extensive tour of the Old World. In 1868, in connection with Mr. John E. Bell, he engaged in the development and sale of a large tract of land in Mill Creek Bottom, which they subdivided into building lots. Three years later he returned to the gas fixture and lamp business, in which he continued some two years. In 1870, being the nominee of both parties, he was almost unanimously elected member of the State Board of Equalization, in which position he rendered signal service to the tax-payers of Cincinnati. The following year he was appointed commissioner of costs and fees of Hamilton county; also a member of the board of park commissioners of Cincinnati. Mr. Carson became a member of the Masonic Order in 1845, was elected grand commander of Knights Templar of Ohio in 1871, and about the same time lieutenant-commander of the Northern Supreme Council of the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, thirty-third degree. Mr. Carson has one of the largest private libraries of English, French and German works on secret soc! ieties in the world; it is also especially rich in illustrated Shakespearean literature.

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/DiH.2ACEB/1690.2.2.1 Message Board Post: Joan, It's possible that William Carson born c1801 that married Lydia Crawford (who is living near David Carson in Haywood NC in 1830) is a son of our David Carson born 1755-65 and wife Catherine. Some in my family think he is, and I still have him listed in my tree with a side note. We know David Carson's sons included Matthew born c1781 TN, Ambrose born c1798-99 TN, Samuel born 1804 NC and one or maybe two more. The censuses for David Carson's household are what is confusing us. In 1800 David Carson lists 1 son 0-10 and 1 son 10-16. These could be Matthew b1781 and Ambrose b1798 if the census was taken late. If it was taken early, the sons could be Matthew and an older son born prior to 1781. In 1810, David Carson lists 2 sons 0-10 and 2 sons 16-25. This is the census household that seems most confusing. In 1820 David Carson lists 1 son 16-18 (Samuel) and 1 son 18-26 which could be Ambrose or William. If it's William, then Ambrose (whom we know is a son) is living elsewhere at age 21-22 in 1820, which is highly possible. David's son Matthew is living nearby on his own with 2 sons age 0-10. Shadrack Carson in 1830 Haywood NC is David's nephew (son of Robert Carson who died around 1820). A younger Robert in Buncombe 1820 may be related. The bottom line is that William has to be at least a nephew (possibly a son of David's brother Robert who died) or he is David's son. I hope this helps clarify some. Gary
