Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/DiH.2ACEB/1690.1.1.2 Message Board Post: Daniel, Your William Carson ancestor born 1801 is thought by some to be either a son or nephew of David Carson, my 4g grandfather (born 1755-65) and wife Catherine. David was probably born in PA. He lived in eastern TN after marrying then lived in Buncombe Co 1800-1810 and Haywood Co NC 1820. David had at least 4 sons: Matthew born 1790-91, Ambrose born 1799-1800, Samuel born 1804 and one more plus daughters Catherine, Virginia Jane and 4 others. In 1830, your William lived near David and his sons in Haywood Co. NC. The confusion as to their connection is the age ranges of the males listed in David's census household. In 1800 David lists 1 male 0-10 and 1 male 10-16. In 1810, he lists 2 males 0-10 and 2 males 16-26. In 1820, he lists 1 male 16-18 and 1 male 18-26. If William is not David's son, he may be a nephew...a son of David's brother Robert Carson or William Jr. According to Robert's descendants, he died c1820 in TN and his 18 yo son Shadrack was sent to live with a relative in Haywood NC. David is the only Carson in that county at the time. Shadrack shows up there in the 1830. Your William could be another son of Robert or a son of his brother William Jr. Research to date indicates that David Carson and Robert were sons of William Carson who died in 1790 in Washington Co TN. His will mentions wife Margaret (believed to be Margaret McCord), children Janet, Mary, William and John plus "my 3 other sons". County road records in 1790 showed David and Robert were sons of William. David was also executor of his will. William Carson and Margaret McCord were married 5/1/1760 in Dauphin (Lancaster) Co PA by Rev. John Roan. The same minister did the marriages of an older Robert Carson who married Margaret Woods in 1755, and a Mary Carson who married John Lee 3/22/1759 By the way, there were several David, Robert and William Carsons in Washington Co TN 1790-1800 who appear to be related. Many of these Carson families seem to have moved down from PA. I have a list of Wiliam and Lydia Crawford's children that came from another descendant. They are listed in our family tree with a side note that we're not certain as to him being a son or nephew. Let me know if you'd like to share information further. Gary Carson

The Ross County chapter of the DAR had actually granted membership to an applicant claiming to be the descendant of such a son. Diligent research on her lineage confirmed the hunch that her ancestor was in no way even related to our Revolutionary ancestor."

Jane- I wish you the best of luck in your search for an American Carson. This is only a courtesy note since I can not help at all. My file of Carson ancestors go back to a George Carson who died in Pike County Mississippi USA in about 1840. Apparently they left Ireland before your ancestors did. Best of luck. Ref: Nelson's History of Cincinnati and Hamilton Co., O, p 890. The OH DAR record above is probably in error. Nelson's "History of Cincinnati and Hamilton Co., Ohio" Page 890 (see entire text in preceding message on Ancestry), does not say anything about the Revolutionary War soldier, William Carson; nor does it give the parentage of the William J. Carson who married Margaret Terry. In "Official Roster III: Soldiers of the American Revolution Who Lived in the State of Ohio," Mrs Earle Johnson was one of the compilers of the book. Her name appears hundreds of times throughout the book, so in all probability, she was not related to either William Carson or William J. Carson. At least two researchers believe that William Jewel Carson (who married Margaret Terry) was the son of Enoch Carson and Achsah Disbrow. See the following two links. 1. Rootsweb mailing list for Hamilton Co. OH: 04 APR 1998 "Descendents of Enoch Carson" by Rob Parker http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/OHHAMILT/1998-04/0891730985 2. Fur infor Nathaniel Massie Chap In the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) database in the NSDAR Library, Washington DC, there are several DAR membership applications based on the Revolutionary War service of the William Carson who married Isabella Gillmore. The application of Viola Walker Scott mentions that the Rev. War veteran, Wm. Carson did have a son named William. An application by Mr. Maffett refers to the book: "Descendents of William Carson, A Revolutionary Patriot Who Survived Valley Forge with Related Berggren, Johnson, Lee, Miller, Patton, Scott and Thompson Lines" by Beatrice Carson. published ca. 1964. Page "X" of this book states lists the children of William Carson and Isabella Gillmore as: A. Samuel Carson (03 FEB 1773 - 25 DEC 1834) m. 1801, Abigail Black (02 MAR 1783 - 22 MAR 1838) B. NSDAR records show that neither William Carson, nor his wife, Isabella Gilmore, his children, or his heirs, filed for a pension based on his service. This is the only information I have on this family. I am not related to these Carson lines. While researching my own Carson line in southern Indiana and Ohio, I ran across the apparent discrepancy in the records and contacted Joellen Fone who has brought the question into open debate on Ancestry World Tree. Joellen apparently has no further information either. She wrote to me, "I don't know any information for sure about William Jewel Carson, other than what I found online."
I'm researching Carson, Egan. My ancestor James Robert Carson was born in Phoenix, Arizona abt 1873-5. His parents were James Robert Carson and Mary Elizabeth Egan and they came from Ireland. He was in Australia in 1912 and worked as an assistant surveyor on the rail lines in Powelltown, Victora. James married Margaret Johnson in 1912 and they moved to South Australia and had twin girls. I have written to this list a couple of times with a request to see if anyone in Phoenix could help me as I am not sure where to look now for any information on the parents. I think they would have died in Phoenix. Thanks, Jane Pakenham. Vic.
