Carson July 11, 1926 – March 18, 2006 Barbara E. Carson, 79, Kokomo, died at 1 a.m. Saturday, March 18, 2006, in her residence. She was born July 11, 1926, in Kokomo, a daughter of Clarence “Jake” and Bernice (Fred) Lytle. On April 18, 1952, she married Robert Olin Carson and he died April 14, 1984. She retired as executive secretary of the Howard County Mental Health Association with more than 20 years of service. She was a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church in Kokomo. She enjoyed reading mystery novels and had a loyal circle of friends. She enjoyed traveling to New York to visit David and Barry for 22 years, seeing several Broadway shows and meeting the stars. She also enjoyed traveling to Smoky Mountains and North Carolina with her husband. She is survived by her son and partner, David L. Carson and Barry Hoff, New York, N.Y.; a brother and sister-in-law, Pete and Rosie Lytle, Phoenix, Ariz.; her special friend of 53 years, Mable Westervelt, Kokomo; and four nephews. Services are 1 p.m. Wednesday in Ellers Mortuary Main Street Chapel, 725 S. Main St., with Rev. Andrew Bowen officiating. Entombment will be in Sunset Memory Garden Mausoleum. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. today at the mortuary. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church. Envelopes will be available at the mortuary. I meant Haywood NC is where those Carson names occured. Do the Andrew or Joseph Carson names I found in Haywood deeds relate to your line? If not they may connect with our David Carson line. The Robert Jr. (born early 1790s) in 1817-1820 records in Haywood and Buncombe may be our David's nephew. The William Carson who died 1790 in Washington Co TN (and wife Margaret, last name McCord probably) were parents of William, David, Robert, John, Janet and Mary. Indications are that is our David (among the many in that area). The name "James" occurs in brother Robert's line. Gary

Actually, the only one that means anything to me is the one that connects John Carson with Hiram Dillingham. There are 2 Hirams. The first was the only KNOWN brother of Absalom Dillingham, my William Carson's father-in-law. When I looked up Hiram in the Dillingham book I also found another bit of Carson data that previously escaped my notice, i.e. the Carsons settled in Buncombe Co. in 1806. "An original land grant issued by the state of North Carolina to James Carson, with the survey attached, contains the name of Absalom Dillingham as chain bearer for the survey. It is dated 1806. Carson entered the tract, two hundred acres on both sides of the Rye Cove Branch of Big Ivy, on 3 January 1806." Back to Hiram, he is listed in the Buncombe County census for 1810 and 1820. He moved to Rabun County, GA in 1821 and died there between 1860 and 1870. John Carson, son of James S! r. and brother of my William, also moved to Rabun County, GA. I don't know when, only that he was there in 1843 when he wrote to William about their brother James' estate. Absalom Dillingham also had a son named Hiram but he was not born until 1805 and he is believed to have died before 1830. I was inclined to think that your finding must be Hiram the brother of Absalom rather than Hiram the son. However, the older Hiram and John Carson, brother of William, were of two different generations. Unfortunately, no other information is available about Hiram the son. The only factual data available on him is his name and birthdate in the family Bible and the fact that he died young, probably before 1830. So one other possibility comes to mind and that would be if the John Carson in this record is actually an uncle to my William which would put him in the same generation as the elder Hiram Dillingham. Are you still with me?! Bottom line is that I think that the Dillingham ! connection and the Rabun Co. GA connection is pretty solid as far as c onnectiing our Carsons. One other thing, I just noticed that Absalom and Rebecca Dillingham lived for 2 to 5 years TN. In fact, that is where William Carson's wife was born. I never noticed that before. I am going to go back and read this early part of the book again to see if I can find anymore information that I might have read and forgotten long before I started in genealogy. I got the book in 1978 and have read a lot of it but it was many years ago. Unfortunately, it is well over 800 pages so much of it has slipped by me over the years. I will get back to you with what I find.

Gary, Do you know if your Carson line was in Virginia earlier than their stay in N.C? I have an Isaac Carson who had a daughter Jane married Robert McCauley in 1794 Augusta Co. I can't get any further back than this Isaac. Jackie

CARSON, JOHN C., of Portland, was born in Center County, Pennsylvania, February 20, 1825. In 1834 the family moved to Ashland, Ohio. He learned the carpenter’s trade and attended the Ashland Academy. He then read medicine three years, and in 1850 went to California with Dr. J. W. Kinnaman to establish a hospital. Complications prevented, and they spent the winter in the mines. The next year Mr. Carson came to Portland and began a business career that has lasted more than forty years. Mr. Carson was one of the founders of the Republican party in Oregon, and attended the preliminary conferences before any public movement was made. In 1855-6 he was president of the City Council, and was twice re-elected a member if the Council. In 1866 he was a member of the United States board appointed to report upon the claims of the Hudson’s Bay Company. In 1870 he was elected a member of the lower house of the legislature, and was twice re-elected,. In 1884 he was elected t! o the state senate, and in 1887 was President of the body.
