    1. Re: [CARROLL] Virginia Families
    2. I am very interested in the Mary "Polly" Carroll born to William Carroll around 1820 in Haywood County, NC. The area that would become Macon County was ceded from the Cherokee in 1819 and was a part of Haywood County until Macon was formed in 1828. I have a John Carroll (Carrel, Carrell, and any other spelling that you can think of!) who married Jane Janes/Jaynes in Rutherford County, later coming to Haywood County. One of his daughters, Martha, married John Stewart Gibson in Haywood County in 1839. Other daughters married Campbell, Nichols, Simonds, etc. John disappears after 1840. We don't know if he died or migrated westward. At any rate, I am interested in any of the Carroll (and Janes/Jaynes) family associated with Haywood County. BTW, William Carroll could not have been born in 1772 in Franklin, NC. There were no settlers west of Old Fort east of what is now Asheville until the mid 1780s. The first one, Samuel Davidson, was murdered by the Cherokee in 1783. His twin brother then migrated with several others to what is now Buncombe County and before long, by 1791, there were enough settlers to warrant a new county and Buncombe was formed officially in January 1792. Could William have been born in Franklin County, NC, or maybe Rutherford or Burke? Franklin County is further east, not too far from Raleigh, but Rutherford and Burke Counties were the fartherest westward and Buncombe was formed from those two counties. There were Carrolls in Rutherford county for sure. The county seat of Macon County, NC is the town of Franklin, but it did not exist until the 1820s. Could we compare Carroll notes to see if there is any connection?
