I have a good bit of information on my mother's family, the Carrolls, but a few branches I'm still trying to figure out: William Carroll, a coastguardsmen in Rathmullan in Donegal married Letitas Fowler. They had at least four children: Margaret, Thomas (1809-1898), Robert (b. 1814), and George (b. 1819). In 1834 Thomas Carroll (my great-great grandfather) married Elizabeth McClure, and the next year they left Donegal for Philadelphia. In 1838 Thomas and Elizabeth, and Thomas' brothers and sister, settled in Keene, Ohio (Coshocton County). Thomas and Elizabeth had 8 children: William (1835-1926), Thomas (1837-1867), Nathaniel (1840-1934), Robert John (1843-1911), Margaret Jane (1846-1923), James (my great-grandfather; 1849-1908), Edgar (1853-1934), and Elizabeth (1856-1945). William, Thomas, Robert, and Edgar became physicians, attending Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia. Nat also attended Jefferson and became a pharmacist. James also attended school in Philadelphia and became a medical book salesman. William, Thomas, Robert, and Nat served in the Union Army during the Civil War, and family lore is that James did also. William settled in Philadelphia and married Anna Davidson and had four children: Franklin Bache (1887-1973), Anna (b. 1889), Mitchel (1890-1948), and Wharton Barker (b. 1892). Edgar lived in New Jersey and married Tillie Buckalew; they had 3 children: Nathaniel (1891-1964), Margaritta (1895-1917), and Edgar Wallace (1897-1952). Thomas, Nathaniel, Margaret, and Elizabeth never married, and Robert John, who married Angeline Kelly, had no children. My great-grandfather, James Carroll, married Mary J. Delany (1857-1918), and they settled in Chicago. They had 5 children: Thomas J. (b. 1886), William J. (1888-1981), Mary Elizabeth (my grandmother, 1889-1959), Margaret C. (1891-1894), James Edgar (1893-1918), and Florence H. (1896-1979). Margaret died as a child, William never married, and neither did James Edgar, who died in WWI. Florence married Richard Atwater. Here are my loose ends: We don't yet know much about my great uncle, Thomas J Carroll (b. 1886 in Philadelphia) -- he grew up in Chicago, apparently took over his father's book selling job after James died in 1908, and he appears in the 1920 Census living in the same house he grew up in, married to a woman named Margret. More remotely, I don't know much about the earlier Thomas Carroll (1809-1898)'s siblings. In Thomas' obituary (1898), his sister is mentioned as Margaret Richie, living in Wisconsin. His brothers George and Robert appeared in the 1840 and 1850 Censuses for Keene, Ohio, but were gone by the 1860 Census. If any of this fits any info others have, I'd love to share notes. It's amazing how frequently these names repeat.
