Hi Gerry, greetings from South Carolina. I read your Michael Carroll information in the digest with interest. I have been searching for a Michael Carroll and his sister Mary Carroll that lived in California after 1850. They both died in San Francisco. I have information on both from about 1850's on, but have been deadended for years as to how they got to San Francisco and from where. Here is about all I have on them (except for the bodies in the family vault!) I descend from a Mary B. Carroll who married Richard C. Tobin in San Francisco. She was married first to a Thomas Gately who died and then married Richard Tobin. Their first son was named Richard C. Tobin and their second son was named Alfred Aloysius Tobin. Alfred was my grandfather. Alfred was born in 1878. Mary B. Carroll's six children with Gately were born between 1858 and 1868. The census lists them as being born in California. She never told her age, but died in 1910 and we guess her to have been born between 1830 and 1840. There isn't even an age on her death certificate or on the cemetery vault records. She had a brother Michael A. Carroll (also in the vault, b. ~1829, d. 1909 at 80 years. In the 1880 census she lists her age as 40, but that is the same age that Richard Tobin gave. I think she was older than him and actually born in the 1830's. Please let me know if you have any missing Carrolls in California! Peggy in South Carolina
