The 1906/09 Guion Miller Roll was to share in an award of cash to the Cherokees ONLY (NOT all five tribes). The requirements were that the applicant be able to prove heirship from an ancestor who was shown on the 1835 Henderson Roll (the easten band prior to Removal). This roll did NOT require "continuous residence in Indian Territory" as did the Dawes Roll. The applicants could (and did) live anywhere they pleased. Below, find application for Christopher C. Dear Sir, When writing to me in regard to my application no. 22715 for participation in the Eastern Cherokee Claims, you will please change my address from Tellico Plains, Tenn to Belltown, Tenn. Resptf. Christopher C. Carroll Belltown, Tenn. ************************* App. # 22715 July 11, 1907. Christopher C. Carroll,, Tellico Plains, Tennessee. Sir, Replying to your letter of July 29, 1907, you are advised that the applications for participation in the Eastern Cherokee fund have not been taken up for final consideration as the Court of Claims in its order of April 29, 1907, has extended the time for the filing of applications to August 31, 1907, and until the applications have all been filed it will be impossible to give final consideration to any of them, or to state just how much each successful claimant will receive. As there are already over 28,000 applications on. file and the claimants are widely scattered through the United States; it will necessarily take considerable time to have all of these cases adjudicated, and until they are so determined no money can be distributed If there is any further information required in connection with your claim you will be duly notified. Very respectfully, NLC. Special Commissioner. **************************** Witness in re: Appln. No. 22715 Misc. George R. Carroll being duly sworn, deposes and says: I libe (lied?) in Monroe Co.? Tenn. I am a half-brother of Christopher C. Carroll. I don´t know that I claim any Indian blood. All I know about my Indian blood is that in April 1907 a man callaing himself R. R. Foote came to see me and my brothers and asked us if we had ever been taught that we had Indian blood. He wanted to know if we were descended from Daniel Carroll and that if we were there was a fortune for you out in Indian Territory. Before that we did not know of any blood in the family. He did not say what kind of Indian we were. He said that my grandfather Daniel Carroll had been on the roll out there 82 years. He got $75.00 out of me and my son and my brother. Signed. G. R. Carroll Subscribed and sworn to before me, at Madisonville, Tenn., this 27th day of June , 1908. Special Commissioner of the Court of Claims. Handwritten: Fails establish claim. R.K. not indian.
