    3. Joe: Thanks for the response to my query. I'm sorry to say that the only reference I have to Quebec is on censuses. I don't know where to begin searching, as I know nothing about Canadian records yet. Need to get to the library and learn where to go. The first three daughters, in order, are Mary, Margaret and Helen. The first three sons, in order, are Thomas, William and John. Am I correct in believing that the first son is named after the husband's father; second after the wife's father? First daughter after the husband's mother; second after the wife's mother? I don't know about the third. When living in Wisconsin, which was from 1851 to 1870, the place named on census is Milwaukee. I found the family in the 1860 census there. I found a christening record of a Catherine Carroll in Portneuf, Quebec on 30 Mar 1832. Father's name is John and mother's is Helena. Sounds close, since Catherine should have been born circa 1830 (first child born 1848), but I don't know how to make the connection. Do you have any ideas? If I could find a marriage for Catherine Carroll to William Martley in the Portneuf area, I'd think that christening record more valid, wouldn't you? All ideas appreciated, and again, thanks for the response. Sally
