Her name was Ann or Anna and her surname is believed to be Shelton. She was b. abt. 1810 in Claiborne or Grainger Co. TN. Hugh and Anna migrated West with the Cherokee in the 1830´s, first living in I.T. and then moving to McDonald Co. MO. Hugh and Anna had at least 10 children: Ralph, John, Henry, James, Samuel, Christopher C. Thomas, Sarah A. Mary S. and Martha E. The name Ralph for their first born son may link to her supposed father, Ralph Shelton of Claiborne Co. TN. Hugh Carroll was killed in the Civil War in MO, supposedly with 3 of his sons but his widow Ann survived him and is believed to have died in 1895. I have only this info, found online: I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Neosho, Newton County, Missouri. Carroll, Ann, d.12/26/1895, Age 87 yrs 2 mo, Dr. Van Cleve While this does not prove it is the same Ann, the age certainly correlates with the known facts and census records. Again, I am researching Carroll only to find the Shelton link for Hugh´s wife Anna, but have accumulated quite a lot of info on this family.
