The original Irish names were without any Mac, Mc or O'. The original name, let's say Carroll, was the forebearer. The offspring were MacCarroll or McCarroll and the grandchildren (and after) were O'Carroll. Many of the prefixes were dropped during the English reign in the 1600's.
