His father was Thomas Carroll. He joined the RIC, married Eliza Kelly of Rathdrum, Co. Wicklow, in the late 1890s, had three daugthers (one of whom was my grandmother) and was posted to Oldcastle/Kells, Co. Meath. By 1920 he had retired to Wicklow town, where he died in the mid 1940s.
