Dear Listers, I have just joined the list in the hope that someone may share the same interests. My GG grandfather was William Carroll. The story goes that his father, whose name I don't yet know, was in a regiment of the British Army sent to India sometime after the Crimean War (which would also make it around the time of the Indian Mutiny, C. 1857/8). William's mother and his three sisters followed but by the time they arrived in India, their husband and father had been killed. William and his two younger sisters, Emily and Ellen stayed in India and were sent to what was effectively an orphanage school. Their mother and eldest sister, Mary Ann, returned to England.
