I wonder if anyone has recorded all the colloquial language associated with it?... and written a translation of it for those folks not fortunate enough to have been reared on the farm? I think much of what has been written here is discussing how the CARROLL name has changed since our ancestors arrived in North America. The name may have changed spellings for the very early immigrants before they got to the colonies, because the family may have spent a few years or a whole generation in exile in another country. For a while Leyden, Holland became sort of a refugee camp for religious pilgrims from the British Isles (including the Pilgrims who settled at Plymouth Rock), and some stayed there a generation or more. We think my husband's surname changed from Southworth to Southard while the family was in Holland. The Dutch ships brought many across the ocean besides just the Dutch who founded New Netherlands (New York). Just think how a Dutch ship Captain might have written "Carroll" on his passenger list when he usually had a hard sound like T on the end of most names! In her book "Virginia CARROLLS and Their Neighbors", Virginia Foster included at least one CARRICK family in her highlighted Carrolls. I have never understood the Soundex Code, but since there are folks who know much more about this than I do, I take their word for the fact that all spellings in the Soundex Code 640 may be my cousins. Rootsweb gives us all these words as a way to spell "Carroll". If our research is to be complete, we must search every source using each of these spellings.
