Mike, This is entirely possible. We've been told that the difference between "O'Neill" and "O'Neil" is that with one "L" was Protestant, and with "LL" it was Catholic. Elaine: Thank you for confirming the "l" trend. I knew a Luke Carroll who is now passed that lived in Barrington Hills, Illinois. He informed me in the 1970's that his Carroll's came from Virginia.
