Eric, This Dempsey, sometimes called Demse or James Demse or Demse James is thought to be the son of Daniel. This Dempsey had a son and at least two grandsons named Dempsey. His son Dempsey married Mary Hall and moved to KY. I think one grandson Dempsey was in a western VA county, and another grandson Dempsey was later in KY. I have never been able to establish any connection between he and the Demcy/Dempsey I found in Sampson in 1770.(and I think came there from Halifax County, NC.) There may be a connection. Lura Do you have the VA genealogy magazine on "Demse Carrell a Study"? If not, let me know I will get you a copy. Some very interesting information on Demse and related surnames. Bettye, Yes, I have the article, "Demse Carrell: A Study". Thank you for the offer. I did not look it up last night when I wrote that quick summary. In one of the footnotes, it states, "1. There was a Demcy Carrol born in Duplin, North Carolina, in 1762. His Revolutionary War service entitled him to a pension by 1837 when he resided in Wilcox County, Alabama. No relationship to the Virginia family has been identified." I believe the Demcy Carrol, to whom the article refers thought be born in 1762 and in the Rev. War, was the son of Dempsey, Sr. and the brother of Stephen and my Alexander who married Lucy Ryal in 1783. Part of Duplin Co. became Sampson Co. in 1784. That is why I refer to the CARROLLS who lived there as Sampson County Carrolls. If there is a connection between these NC and AL families and the Demse/Dempsey of VA and KY, I have not yet found it.
