It is not yet known how Burton is related to the Sampson, NC Carrolls. The DNA profiles of these seven men are highlighted in orange in the chart of the Carroll DNA Project at http://www.childtalk.com/History/carrollfamilydnavalues.pdf Since several CARROLL, CARREL, CARROL, CARRELL family groupings are developing, it should be easier now for a person to use DNA to trace his CARROLL heritage. Only a man with the CARROLL surname (by any spelling) and who has no adoption or non-paternal event in his lineage (as far as he knows) should be tested for this project. I would encourage a person to order either the Y-DNA37 or Y-DNA67 test at https://www.familytreedna.com/surname_join.aspx?code=F25174&special=True or contact the Project Administrator, Kevin Carroll, at [email protected] for more information. Ordering the Y-DNA12 test only tells one's very ancient background and doesn't help find a lineage in the last few thousand years. The Y-DNA25 test returns too many false positives and false negatives to be of much help. It is more economical to do all the testing at once, but it is possible to do a cheaper test, then upgrade later. I invite anyone who is interested in the Carroll DNA Project to join the [email protected] mail list. Those on the mail list should be able to help answer your questions.
