    3. Valerie, Unfortunately the Y-DNA results don't come back showing which line of the family is which. The string of numerals show how many repeats of a certain pattern is seen at a given spot on the Y chromosome. This string of numerals, or haplotype of the individual, is helpful only as it is compared with that of another person. Each laboratory chooses which spots on the chromosome to plot for comparing. These spots are considered to be "Junk" markers, because the are not important for the health or appearance of the man. The CARROLL project was started with FamilyTreeDNA and they offer tests of 12, 25, 37, or 67 markers. The more that are compared, the more accurate the results will be. The results of the Carroll project so far are displayed in two places on the web. One is the FTDNA site: http://www.familytreedna.com/(c1unxwvjnrr3oebovhuard3e)/public/carroll/index.aspx?fixed_columns=on(These results may not display properly if you have your web browserset to view with largest size fonts.)The other one is under the care of the project administrator, KevinCarroll.http://www.childtalk.com/History/carrollfamilydnavalues.mhtHe has grouped some of the results together and given them a certaincolor if they seem to perhaps be related. Notice that three of thosecolored orange are identical. That is amazing since these three mendid not know each other and their ancestors had not lived in the samestate for 200 years. This match of 37 out of 37 alleles (markers)tells us that there is a 99.55 percent probability that these men hada common ancestor in the last 12 generations and a 97.28 percentprobability that the common ancestor was within the last 8generations. It is still up to genealogy research to name thosecommon ancestors. In my case, the DNA gives evidence to! what Ithought was true based on research. On the right side of this chart some of the men have listed part oftheir lineage. Look there to see if you see one that might be yourfamily. I see the name John Daniel Carroll for one, but I doubt thatis the Daniel to whom you were referring. The more men who take thetest, the faster the comparisons can be made and the results groupedto show related families.I hope this helps to answer your questions. Perhaps someone else canadd more.Lura CARROLL Southard>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>----- Original Message -----From: "V.A.
