I learned that if a person who was or part native American with dark skin, they were labeled "black" or "mulatto". I found a marriage that indicated "black" but from the people in the marriage, I knew they were part Native American and inherited the dark skin. Also, lets face it, most of us have relatives who are other than "white". Not only did the male slave owners and overseers have sex (I use that term loosely) with the slaves, so did the females. At first I only looked at the white people that came up on Ancestry.com, then I realized I was missing vital information. If the Census taker was not familiar with the area that accepted inter-racial marriages, he would label them "black". The Native Americans were classed "black". How we quickly forget most of us came from slavery. Freedom is new, only about 200 years old unless you happened to have been part of the aristocracy. With the industrial revolution and! the rise of the middle class, the whites started demanding more freedom. Now we are going backwards, we hardly make ANYTHING in this country any more. I was doing research for an English Lit course on adoptees when I ran across the information that England dumped their orphanages in America. They needed the "hands" to work the farms. True the children could earn their freedom after 7 years, but they were still labeled "servants". If you want to know how the "white" people were treated in England, read Anne Perry's books. Many cannot trace their families any further than the shores of America because their ancestors were orphans. We had a continuation of "white" slavery here before we had "black" slavery. Now we have an illusion of freedom. If we fail to remember we are doomed to repeat. I thought the black slaves used the name of their BIOLOGICAL father. I have read this also. I also read that until later they didn't have a term for native american so tthe census taker not knowing what to put down called them black or colored a lot of times, thus sometimes leading people to believe that the person was of the "black" race, when sometimes they actually were native american or part native american. Not all the time, mind you, but some.
