This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: southard Surnames: CARROLL Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.carroll/7494/mb.ashx Message Board Post: When the last CARROLL message board posting that was gatewayed to the mail list arrived, I was reading on the same subject as stated in that letter, ".... England dumped their orphanages in America." According to Peter Wilson Coleman in his book "British Emigrants in Bondage 1614-1788" which was compiled from several of his earlier books, indeed, in 1597 an Elizabethan Act provided for the banishment of rogues and vagabonds to the American colonies. In the very earliest period men were selected for reprieve from the death sentence based on their ability to work and perform the tasks needed in the colonies. By 1619 the Governor of Virginia and James I agreed to send "desolate persons" to work on the plantations as servants. "This proved, from the Government's viewpoint, to be such a beneficial idea that it was extended in the following year to enable the rounding up and despatch to Virginia of one hundred children from the "swarming multitudes" in London "to redeem so many poor souls from misery and ruin." Coleman footnotes that statement as coming from "Acts of the Privy Council 1620." In his thirty years of searching in British archival records, Coleman has found the names of over 45,000 persons, mostly convicts but also vagabonds and orphans, who were brought to the American colonies against their will. At first they were sent with a person to guard and then dispose of them upon arrival in the colonies. Later the captain on the ship assumed that roll. Some were bound to individuals before sailing to work for a specified period of time and then be set free. Some were actually sold upon arrival in the colonies much as the slaves were. However, the difference was that they must be set free when they had finished their term of service. After the prisons of England were relieved of overcrowding, the Irish convicts were sent to work in the colonies. It sounds terrible, but I think it actually turned out to be a good solution to many problems. The disease infested prisons were emptied of those poor people who could not raise the money to pay their court costs to be released. The new territory had persons to clear the land and start a budding economy. The fresh air, exercise, and fresh food grew strong persons who had learned how to work in order to begin a new country. Why have I written all this?? Because many of us have been looking for our CARROLL ancestors who came on these ships! I know that doesn't set well with most of you!! Nevertheless, I hope you will consider it a badge of honor if you find a name you recognize in the list I will post in another message. I have not tried to find a spouse. He is the son of George W Carroll and Mildred A. Woody. Mildred and George married 22 Sep 1845. Mildred died between 1860 and 1865 because he married Adeline Victory Terry 20 Sep 1865. Victoria does not appear on the 1870 Census with George Carroll but I found the marriage record. Children of George Carroll and Mildred A Woody are: Paul A Willie A Richard B George A E Mary E Children of George Washington Carroll and Adeline Victoria Terry are: James W, Nancy Ellen (my grandmother, married James M Bryant, Jr) Hartwell Omega Olivia (married my grandfather's brother, Patrick Henry Bryant, I cannot find him with Oliver/Livia; Nancy & Oliver married brothers, my grandfather, James M. Bryant, Jr & Patrick Henry Bryant). Octavia I was told G W and Victoria had 3 other children born after 1880, I haven't really looked at that very closely. I believe the father of George Washington was Joshua Carroll, Nelson County, VA. There were 3 Carrolls on the 1840 Census in Nelson County; Joshua, Henry, and William. I found no Census for Joshua or Henry in 1850 to indicate place of birth but William Carroll is on the 1850 Census, Nelson County, Birth Place Ireland. Does anyone know if these 3 men are brothers? Is Joshua the father of George W Bryant, was Joshua born in VA? Any information would be helpful. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. This means as new men are tested, there is a good chance they will be able to find a match. So many came to the North American Continent before good records were kept, and especially those who went to the south and southwest, did not keep good family records. Therefore, DNA may be the only way to find relatives... and some of us have! How many alleles (markers) does a person need to test to verify a match? It has become very evident testing 12 doesn't prove much at all except the ancient background. Most have learned that one needs at least 37, and 67 is better. On another project I learned that FTDNA is offering special prices on upgrades THIS WEEK only. You can read more about that at http://www.worldfamilies.net/blog/upgrade-sale If you have tested 12, 25, or 37 markers with FTDNA, you can probably find those special prices on your personal web page that you will use for ordering the upgrade. These prices seem to last only until Saturday, May 23, so if you want to upgrade some day, this might be the week to do that. I am not connected in any way to FTDNA. I would just love to see more CARROLL tests for comparison. Lura Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. When I am dead and in my grave and all my bones are rotten in this sampler you will find my name when I am quite forgotten". dated 1826.
